We will be discussing the important events that set the course of U.S. history as well as the artwork that depicted this time period. The artwork showing these formative years will used to bring historical events alive and as means of discussing the artists and how they portrayed America.
In our last class of American History through Art, we ended with the inauguration of George Washington as the first president of the United States. We will now continue with the presidencies of John Adams through Andrew Jackson. With the coming of the Civil War, we see the age of photography add to our view of U.S. history as it brings a new sense of realism to the American people.
Instructor: Doug Sheer grew up on Long Island, N.Y. and after graduating from SUNY New Paltz joined the Peace Corps and served in the Marshall Islands for two years. He has been teaching social studies for over 30 years including A.P. U.S. History, A.P. Human Geography, and A.P. World History. He was awarded a National Endowment for the Humanities grant to study celestial navigation in
Greenwich, England in 1994. In 1996 he was asked by the American Federation of Teachers to instruct teachers in Slovakia about different methods of teaching democratic principles. He brings a love of history and art to his presentations.
