When you walk into an American House, you are entering our residents home, where they live, where they feel safe. Your intention may be to help our residents or visit with your loved one, but if you're not vaccinated, you may unintentionally bring with you the coronavirus that could harm those you serve or love. Our residents received the COVID-19 vaccine to get to at least a 70% vaccination rate so they could walk around freely. Join us in rolling up your sleeves, and help our residents feel safe.
Get the Facts
We've researched some valuable facts, and if you have any questions about COVID-19 vaccines, please talk to a reliable source, such as your doctor. Don't be a victim of vaccine misinformation. Arm yourself with the facts.
Did you know

97% of people in the hospital with COVID-19 are not vaccinated.
99% of COVID-19 deaths are people who are unvaccinated.
Positive cases are rising, from 2% in June 2021 to over 6% in July 2021.
Vaccines offer over 80% effectiveness against infection, 90% against severe disease.
About 99.999% of fully vaccinated Americans have not had a deadly COVID-19 breakthrough case.
Vaccines went through all required stages of clinical trials.

How COVID-19 Vaccines Work
COVID-19 vaccines help our bodies develop immunity to the virus that causes COVID-19 without us having to get the illness.
When vaccinated, the body is left with a supply of memory T-lymphocytes as well as B-lymphocytes that will remember how to fight that virus in the future. It typically takes a few weeks after vaccination for the body to produce lymphocytes.

It is possible that a person could be infected with the virus just before or just after vaccination and then get sick because the vaccine did not have enough time to provide protection.
Sometimes after vaccination, the process of building immunity can cause symptoms, such as fever. These symptoms are normal and are signs that the body is building immunity.
Vaccines do not provide 100% protection, so breakthrough infections, in which people get the virus despite having been fully vaccinated, will occur.
Most of the breakthrough cases about 74% occurred among adults 65 or older.
If vaccinated people do get sick, they are likely to have milder symptoms.

TheModerna Vaccine(aka mRNA-1273)
Most American House communities have licensed nurses on staff to administer the Moderna vaccine.

The FDA authorized the emergency use of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine to prevent COVID-19 in individuals 18 years of age and older under an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA)
For a complete dosage, you will receive two shots, 28 days apart.
You are considered fully vaccinated two weeks after your second shot.
The Moderna vaccine has been shown, in controlled clinical trials, to have an efficacy of approximately 94.1% in protecting against COVID-19
Side effects can include chills, headache, pain, tiredness, and/or redness and swelling at the injection site, all of which generally resolve within a day or two.

NOTE: COVID-19 vaccines are not interchangeable. If you received a Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, you should get the same product for your second shot.
Pfizer-BioNTech (COMIRNATY) Vaccine
FDA has granted full approval for Pfizer-BioNTech (COMIRNATY) COVID-19 Vaccine. CDCs Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices is meeting on Monday, August 30, 2021, to discuss its updated recommendation for this vaccine.

Based on evidence from clinical trials in people 16 years and older, the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine was 95% effective at preventing laboratory-confirmed infection with the virus that causes COVID-19 in people who received two doses and had no evidence of being previously infected.
The vaccine was also highly effective in clinical trials at preventing COVID-19 among people of diverse age, sex, race, and ethnicity categories and among people with underlying medical conditions.
Evidence shows mRNA COVID-19 vaccines offer similar protection in real-world conditions as they have in clinical trial settings reducing the risk of COVID-19, including severe illness by 90% or more, among people who are fully vaccinated.
Possible side effects include, chills, headache, pain, tiredness, and/or redness and swelling at the injection site, all of which generally resolve within a day or two.
For a complete dosage, you will receive two shots, 28 days apart.

NOTE: COVID-19 vaccines are not interchangeable. If you received a Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, you should get the same product for your second shot.
Johnson & Johnsons Janssen (J&J/Janssen) COVID-19 Vaccine

The J&J/Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine was 66.3% effective in clinical trials (efficacy) at preventing laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 infection in people who received the vaccine and had no evidence of being previously infected. People had the most protection 2 weeks after getting vaccinated.
In the clinical trials, the vaccine had high efficacy at preventing hospitalization and death in people who did get sick. No one who got COVID-19 at least 4 weeks after receiving the J&J/Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine had to be hospitalized.
Women younger than 50 years old should especially be aware of the rare risk of blood clots with low platelets after vaccination. There are other COVID-19 vaccines available for which this risk has not been seen.
Possible side effects include, chills, headache, pain, tiredness, and/or redness and swelling at the injection site, all of which generally resolve within a day or two.
For a complete dosage, you will receive one shot.

Benefits of Getting Vaxed

Protect our residents in their home.
Prevent severe illness and death and avoid long-term side effects of COVID-19.
People who have had COVID-19 previously, getting fully vaccinated provides additional protection against reinfection.
A publication from MMWR shows vaccines prevented COVID-19 related hospitalizations among the highest risk age groups.

If you or a loved one are a resident of American House, we offer vaccinations on-site for individuals who qualify. Find a community near you.

The Doctor Will See You Now....At Home!

In an era where medical care is increasingly fast-paced and impersonal, the resurgence ofdoctor house calls is rekindling a vital connection between patients and healthcare providers. While house calls may seem like a relic of a bygone era, their growing popularity demonstratesthe value of personalized, comprehensive medical care in the comfort of ones home. Beyondconvenience, house calls offer several distinct benefits for patients, particularly those managingchronic diseases or limited by mobility challenges.Unrushed and Thorough CareOne of the most significant advantages of doctor house calls is the time physicians can devote to each patient. Unlike traditional office visits, often constrained by tight schedules and waiting rooms full of patients, house calls allow the physician to focus entirely on the individual without the pressure of back-to-back appointments. For patients managing multiple chronic conditionssuch as diabetes, hypertension, orarthritisthis extended time is invaluable. A house call offers the opportunity for a thoroughevaluation, allowing the physician to address multiple issues in a single visit. Complex medicalhistories, medication regimens, and ongoing symptoms can be reviewed in depth, ensuring nodetail is overlooked. Patients often feel more comfortable discussing their concerns in thefamiliar surroundings of their home, further enhancing the quality of care.Greater Accessibility to the PhysicianHouse calls also improve patient access to their physician, particularly for individuals withmobility issues, elderly patients, or those living in rural areas. For these groups, traveling to aclinic can be challenging, often requiring assistance from family members or costlytransportation services. Home visits remove these barriers, bringing care directly to the patientsdoorstep. This enhanced accessibility is especially crucial for patients who may delay or avoid seekingcare due to logistical difficulties. By meeting patients where they are, house calls help bridgegaps in the healthcare system, ensuring that those most in need receive timely and consistentmedical attention.A Holistic View of Patient HealthOne of the unique benefits of house calls is the physician's ability to observe and assess thepatient's living environment. Unlike traditional office visits, where the scope is limited to clinicaldiscussions, home visits provide a more holistic perspective on the patient's health. For example, a doctor can evaluate whether the home environment is safe and conducive to thepatients well-being. Are there tripping hazards for someone at risk of falls? Is there access tohealthy food and adequate lighting? Are medications stored properly? These insights allow thephysician to make tailored recommendations that address not just the patient's medical needsbut also the social and environmental factors affecting their health. In cases where chronic diseases are exacerbated by poor living conditions, the doctor cansuggest practical changes or connect the patient with additional resources, such as socialservices or home health aides. This proactive approach can significantly improve healthoutcomes and reduce hospitalizations.Building Trust and Strengthening RelationshipsHouse calls foster a deeper level of trust and rapport between patients and their doctors. Theone-on-one setting and the undivided attention of the physician create an environment wherepatients feel heard and valued. This strong relationship encourages patients to adhere totreatment plans, ask questions, and engage actively in their care. For families caring for elderly or disabled loved ones, having a doctor visit the home can alsoprovide much-needed reassurance. Caregivers can be involved in discussions about treatmentoptions and receive guidance on how best to support their loved ones.Modern Tools Meet Traditional CareThe resurgence of house calls doesnt mean healthcare is stepping back in time; instead, itsembracing the best of both worlds. Todays home visits are supported by modern medical toolsand technology. Portable diagnostic devices, telemedicine platforms, and electronic healthrecords enable physicians to deliver high-quality care comparable to that of a clinic. With these advancements, doctors can perform routine tests, monitor chronic conditions, andeven conduct minor procedures during home visits. This blend of traditional care and moderntechnology ensures patients receive comprehensive and convenient medical attention. The Future of Personalized HealthcareAs healthcare systems worldwide continue to evolve, the return of doctor house calls representsa promising shift toward more patient-centered care. By offering unrushed appointments, greater access to medical professionals, and a holistic understanding of patients lives, housecalls are reshaping how we think about healthcare delivery. For patients, particularly those managing chronic illnesses or facing mobility challenges, thisapproach provides not only medical care but also peace of mind. For physicians, its anopportunity to reconnect with the foundational principles of medicinelistening, understanding, and healing. In a world that often prioritizes efficiency over empathy, house calls remind us that the heart ofhealthcare lies in the human connection. Whether its addressing complex medical issues, evaluating living conditions, or simply taking the time to listen, doctor house calls are a vital andmeaningful way to ensure that every patient receives the care they deserve.

Healthy Aging: A Fun Guide to Staying Young at Heart

1. Keep Moving: Dance, Walk, PlayJust Move! Staying active is one of the best things you can do for your body and mind. And heres the good news: you dont have to run marathons to reap the benefits. Whether its walking your dog, dancing in your kitchen, or gardening, any movement counts! Exercise helps keep your muscles strong, your balance steady, and your heart happy.Think of it this way: your body is like a car. If you leave it in the garage too long, it gets rusty. But take it for a spin every day, and itll keep running smoothly for years to come!Tip: Try for 30 minutes of movement a day. That could mean a brisk walk, some stretches, or even a few rounds of your favorite dance moves. The goal is to make it fun so you stick with it!2. Eat Well: Healthy Food That Tastes Great Eating the best foods for healthy aging doesnt mean giving up your favorite foods. Its more about adding in some power-packed goodies that will help you feel your best. Think colorful fruits, crunchy veggies, lean proteins, and whole grains. These foods are like fuel for your body, keeping your energy up and your system running smoothly. As you age, your body might need a little extra of certain nutrients, like calcium for strong bones and vitamin B12 for energy. But dont worrythere are plenty of delicious ways to get these. For example, yogurt, cheese, and leafy greens are great for calcium, while fish, eggs, and fortified cereals can help with B12.Tip: Focus on adding in foods you love that are also good for you. And remember, its okay to treat yourself! A little piece of chocolate or a favorite dessert wont hurt if youre mostly eating nutritious meals.3. Keep Your Brain Sharp: Puzzles, Books, and New Hobbies Just like your body, your brain needs exercise too! Keeping your mind active is key to staying sharp and mentally fit as you age. And the best part? Brain-boosting activities can be really fun. Whether you enjoy crossword puzzles, Sudoku, reading, or learning something new (like knitting, painting, or a new language), its all great for keeping your mind in tip-top shape.Tip: Challenge yourself with something new every day. It could be a puzzle, a book, or even a new hobby. Learning keeps the brain young!4. Stay Social: Friends, Family, and Fun Humans are social creatures, and staying connected with others is one of the best ways to keep spirits high and the mind sharp. Whether its spending time with family, catching up with friends, or joining a club, staying socially active helps combat loneliness and improves both mental and emotional well-being. Dont underestimate the power of a good laugh or a meaningful conversation. Connecting with others adds joy to life and can help keep depression and anxiety at bay. Plus, its a great excuse to get out of the house!Tip: Make time for social activities, even if its just a phone call with a friend or a video chat with family. Being with people who make you laugh and feel good is one of the best medicines around.5. Preventive Care: Stay on Top of Your Health One of the easiest ways to stay healthy as you age is by staying on top of your check-ups and screenings. Think of it like regular maintenance for your body, just like youd give your car a tune-up. Regular screenings, like blood pressure checks, cholesterol tests, and cancer screenings, can catch problems early when theyre easiest to fix.And dont forget your vaccinesstaying up to date on shots like the flu, pneumonia, and shingles vaccines can help you avoid serious illnesses.Tip: Make a list of your regular check-ups and stay on top of them. If youre not sure what screenings you need, just ask your doctor.6. Get Your Zzzs: Sleep is Your Superpower Sleep is often called natures best medicine, and its true! A good nights rest helps you feel refreshed, keeps your mood steady, and even helps your body repair itself. As we age, though, sleep can sometimes be a little trickier. Maybe you wake up more often at night or dont feel as rested in the morning. The key to better sleep is creating a routine that helps you wind down. Think cozydim the lights, put away the screens, and maybe try a relaxing activity before bed like reading or listening to calming music.Tip: Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep each night. If sleep issues persist, talk to your doctor. There could be an easy fix, like treating sleep apnea or adjusting your routine.7. Find Your Joy: Stay Engaged in Life As you grow older, its more important than ever to stay connected to the things that make you happy. Whether its a hobby, a passion project, or volunteering, staying engaged gives life meaning and keeps your heart full.Maybe youve always wanted to learn how to paint, or perhaps youve got a green thumb and love gardening. Whatever it is, make time for the activities that bring you joy. Theyre good for your heart and soul.Tip: Take time each day to do something that makes you smile, whether its a hobby or just spending time with people you love. Your happiness is as important as your physical health!Age Gracefully, with a Smile Aging doesnt have to be a time of slowing downit can be a time to thrive! By staying active, eating well, keeping your brain sharp, and maintaining strong social connections, you can continue to live life with vitality and joy.
