The Positive Impact of Senior Living Communities on Couples

According to a study conducted by the National Senior Living Association, 85% of couples who choose to move to senior living communities report a significant improvement in their quality of life since making that decision. This study included couples residing in the United States.

In addition to the study, research conducted by the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) revealed that couples who reside in senior living communities experience a stronger sense of social connection and engagement. The study found that 78% of couples reported an increase in social interactions and opportunities for friendship compared to their previous living arrangements. This heightened social connectedness plays a vital role in combating feelings of loneliness and isolation, which can often be a challenge for older adults. Senior living communities offer a range of activities, events, and shared spaces designed to foster a sense of community and encourage meaningful connections among residents, ensuring that couples can continue to lead active and fulfilling lives together.

The shared experiences and understanding within the community can provide a sense of comfort, camaraderie, and companionship.

These may include fitness centers, swimming pools, transportation services, dining options, housekeeping, and laundry services. By having access to these amenities and services, couples can save money that they would otherwise spend on gym memberships, dining out, or hiring external help.
  • Potential healthcare savings: Senior living communities may offer on-site healthcare services or have partnerships with healthcare providers. This can lead to potential savings on medical expenses, as residents can receive coordinated and convenient healthcare within the community.
  • Social and recreational opportunities: Senior living communities often provide a variety of social and recreational activities designed to promote an active and engaged lifestyle. The Impact of FTRI Specialized Phones: Enhancing Communication for Floridians

Since 1991, Florida Telecommunications Relay, Inc. (FTRI) has improved the lives of Floridians experiencing hearing loss and speech impairments, through its specialized telecommunications Equipment Distribution Program (EDP). Established by Floridas Telecommunications Access Systems Act (TASA) in response to the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, FTRIs EDP oers an array of devices designed to bridge communication gaps.  Per TASA, a monthly 7-cent surcharge on landline phone bills covers the cost of FTRI distributed equipment, and the Florida Relay Service.  By providing equipment at no cost to consumers, FTRI is empowering individuals to lead more independent lives while remaining connected to the world. Let's take a look at several FTRI specialized devices and explore some heartwarming client stories that illustrate their profound impact on everyday lives.   Understanding FTRI Specialized Phones   FTRI specialized equipment caters to a range of communication needs. The devices include amplified phones, cell phone amplifiers, captioned telephones, text telephones (TTYs), and alerting devices. Each type is engineered to address specific needs:   1.     Amplified Phones: These phones are equipped with volume controls that can amplify sound significantly, up to 50 decibels, making it easier for individuals with hearing loss to understand conversations. They also feature tone settings, loud speakerphones, back-lit buttons, and loud ringers.2.     Cell Phone Amplifiers: Amplifiers use Bluetooth technology to wirelessly   pair with smart phones (Android, iPhone).  These portable, rechargeable devices allow a user to enjoy many of the same features found on standard amplified phones, such as volume and tone controls, hearing aid compatibility, and loud speakerphones.   3.     Captioned Telephones:  These devices display real-time captions of the conversation on a large screen, helping those with severe hearing loss to  read what the other party is saying.  Screens can be customized to a users preference, and call transcripts can be saved for future review.   4.     Text Telephones (TTYs): TTYs allow individuals with hearing or speech impairments to communicate via typed messages.   5.     Alerting Devices: These include flashing lights and loud ringers to alert individuals to incoming calls.   Transformative Client Stories   Jack and His Amplified Phone   Jack, a 75-year-old retired teacher, began experiencing hearing loss a few years ago. As his hearing deteriorated, he found it increasingly difficult to keep up with phone conversations, particularly with his grandchildren who live out of state. The frustration of missing out on these precious interactions led him to seek help from FTRI.   Upon receiving the Clarity XLC8, John noticed an immediate improvement. The adjustable volume and tone controls allowed him to customize each call. For the first time in years, he could clearly hear his grandchildren's voices. The device not only restored his ability to communicate, but also brought immense joy back into his life, through an improved connection with his loved ones.   Dave and his Cell Phone Amplifier   Like so many other Floridians, Dave disconnected his landline years ago.  He relied on his iPhone to make all his phone calls. Over time, however, he found himself using texting to avoid making calls whenever possible, because the iPhones volume was simply not loud enough for him to hear conversations clearly.   Daves daughter reached out to FTRI with questions about the Clarity XLCgo Cell Phone Amplifier, hoping it might be easy enough for her father to operate.  Both father and daughter were delighted to learn that the XLCgo connects to smart phones by Bluetooth quite easily, and is designed to be used both at home and on the go.  Once Dave had paired his iPhone to the XLCgo and realized he could once again enjoy conversations over the phone, there was no looking back for him.   Maria and Her Captioned Telephone   Maria, a 62-year-old librarian, was diagnosed with profound hearing loss, which made phone conversations nearly impossible.  This posed a significant challenge in her life, where communicating over the phone was essential for both personal and professional reasons.  Feeling isolated and frustrated, Maria turned to FTRI for a solution.   FTRI provided Maria with a captioned telephone.  This device transformed her ability to communicate. The real-time captions allowed her to read conversations, ensuring she could understand every word spoken.  Saving call transcripts for future reference became routine for her, especially for calls with her doctor to discuss medications. The captioned phone improved her life by restoring her sense of independence, safety, and competence.   Sam and His TTY Device   Sam, a 45-year-old software developer, was born with a severe speech impairment. Communicating over the phone was always a daunting task for him, often requiring the assistance of a family member or colleague. This dependency made Sam feel self-conscious and restricted his ability to handle personal and professional matters independently.   FTRI introduced Sam to a TTY device and the Florida Relay Service, which revolutionized his communication experience.  The TTY allowed Sam to type his messages, which were then converted into voice for the person on the other end of the line by the Relay Service.  Likewise, he received typed responses that he could read. This device gave Sam the autonomy he craved, enabling him to manage personal communications without assistance. The TTY device empowered   Sam, boosting his confidence and fostering a greater sense of independence. The Broader Impact of FTRIThe stories of Jack, Dave, Maria, and Sam are just a few examples of how FTRI specialized phones are transforming lives across Florida. By providing these devices at no cost, FTRI is removing financial barriers that might otherwise prevent individuals from accessing essential communication tools. This initiative is fostering inclusivity, ensuring that everyone, regardless of their impairments, can stay connected with the world around them. Moreover, FTRI's eorts extend beyond just providing devices. The organization also oers training and support to help users get the most out of their specialized phones. This comprehensive approach ensures that individuals are not only equipped with the necessary tools but are also confident in using them eectively. To learn more about FTRIs Equipment Distribution Program, visit www.ftri.org, or call 800-222-3448.

How Heat Affects Older Adults and Ways to Stay Safe

When temperatures rise, older people are among those most likely to become sick and die from the damaging effects of heat. Of the estimated 12,000 people in the U.S. who die from heat-related causes each year, 80 percent are over age 60. Its clear that senior adults are most vulnerable to the stresses of heat. This article will explore how heat affects older adults while offering ways to stay safe during the heat waves of summer. Why Older Adults Are More Vulnerable to HeatBiological factors play a role in the dangers of high temperatures when youre over 60. Even if youre healthy, it can be difficult to discern when its too hot or that youre becoming dehydrated. This means you may be slower to take measures to protect yourself from the heat or intake more fluids. To make matters worse, as you age, your body holds more heat as temperatures increase. This is because your glands dont release as much sweat as when you were younger, so your internal cooling system isnt as effective or efficient. Additionally, your blood circulation diminishes with age, which means less heat is released from your blood vessels through your skin.Medications can also make you more heat intolerant as an older adult. If your doctor makes you aware of this and offers insight in how to manage this side effect, the problem can be overcome. You dont necessarily have to choose between your medication and heat safety. What Are the Signs of Overheating for Older Adults? You may experience several of these symptoms when you are overheated:Sudden dizzinessHeat crampsSwelling your legs or anklesHeat exhaustionHeath StrokeHeat exhaustion happens when your body can no longer cool itself. You can address the situation by removing yourself to a cool environment, loosening your clothes or putting on cooler clothes. You can also try taking a cool bath. Some people find it helpful to drink a sports beverage that contains electrolytes. This can hydrate your body more rapidly than water alone.Symptoms of heat exhaustion include:ThirstDizzinessWeaknessStumbling, becoming uncoordinatedNauseaIncreased sweatingCold, clammy skinRapid pulseHeat stroke surpasses heat exhaustion and is a medical emergency. If you suspect a heat stroke, call 911 immediately. Get to a cooler place and put on cooler clothes. Do NOT have anything to drink, as this could make the problem worse.Symptoms of a heat stroke include:FaintingIncreased body temperature over 104 degrees FahrenheitDry skinStrong and rapid pulseOr a slow and weak pulseNo longer sweating (even though its still hot)Heat Safety Tip #1: Avoid the OutdoorsIts best to avoid direct sun and stay inside an air conditioned building when its especially hot outside. Try planning your outdoor activities for early in the morning and finish by 10 a.m. If morning isnt ideal, you can plan to be outdoors as the sun starts to set. Otherwise, stay where there is air conditioning. If you dont have air conditioning or cant afford it, spend some time in places that do, especially when there is a heat wave. You could read a book at the library, walk at an indoor mall, or meet your friend for ice coffee.Heat Safety Tip #2: Stay HydratedThis is another obvious one, but it can also slip your mind if youre not making an effort to pay attention to your fluid intake. Ensure you drink plenty of cool or cold water, clear juices, electrolyte drinks, or anything that is alcohol and caffeine free. Both alcohol and caffeine are diuretics that expel fluid from your body. They counteract hydration. Most experts agree that you should drink one-third to one half your body weight in ounces each day. During the summer, its best to drink at the higher end of the range to prevent dehydration.Heat Safety Tip #3: Dress for the WeatherIts best to wear looser, light-colored clothes that are also lighter in weight. These materials are more breathable, so they dont trap heat. And the lighter colors reflect more of the suns energy rather than absorbing it like darker colors. Its also a good idea to wear a broad-brimmed hat if youre in the sun.Heat Safety Tip #4:Use SunscreenUse broad spectrum sunscreen that is SPF 15 or higher. You may choose a lotion or a spray, but whats most important is that you apply it liberally to all sun-exposed skin. While youre aware that sunscreen helps protect your skin from damaging UV rays and sunburns, you might not realize that it can also help prevent heat exhaustion and heat stroke.Heat Safety Tip #5: Apply Cool WaterWhen youre feeling too warm, take a cool (but not too cold) shower or bath. This can help to regulate your system and bring relief to the discomfort. If youre short on time or have another reason for not wanting to get completely wet, you can apply cool, wet washcloths to key areas like your wrists, ankles, neck, and armpits.Be Aware and Proactive This SummerThe best way to beat the heat this summer is to be conscious of outdoor temperatures, sun exposure, and your own bodys reactions. Remember that you may not recognize your overheating until you are already dehydrated or experiencing heat exhaustion symptoms. So its best to stay proactive and be sure youre dressing for the heat, staying hydrated, using sunscreen, and applying cool water when needed.TYE Medical offers premium incontinence products in a variety of sizes and absorbency levels. Swimming with Incontinence: How to Enjoy the Pool or Beach with a Leaky Bladder

Most people love being near water during the hot months of summer. Relaxing by the pool or on the beach is a favorite summer pastime. But if youre living with bladder incontinence, your favorite warm-weather activities may become a burden. The idea of wearing swimwear can cause anxiety as you consider the consequences of leaks and worry about disguising your incontinence products. While these are legitimate concerns, swimming with incontinence while maintaining peace of mind is possible. Here are some tips for the best wet n wild summer yet.Dont Stress About Small Leaks While SwimmingLight bladder leaks are no problem whether youre swimming in the ocean or a pool. Its completely harmless to yourself and others. Even people without incontinence empty their bladder in the ocean (not that its recommended). In either case, its best to empty your bladder before entering the water. This will buy you some time without any concern about leaks. This is especially important when swimming in a pool. When urine mixes with chlorine it can irritate skin. Small leaks may not be an issue, but larger leaks can cause problems for yourself and others. If your leaks are larger, its important not only to empty your bladder before swimming, but also to wear incontinence swimwear.Buy Quality Incontinence SwimwearIts critical that you dont wear any incontinence products into the water that arent specifically designed for that purpose. Typical incontinence aids are created to absorb liquid and will absorb the water around you until they burst or break. Remnants of the product can clog pool filters and be harmful to marine life if youre swimming in the ocean. All of this can be quite embarrassing and is avoidable.Instead, purchase incontinence swimwear that is specially made to wear in the water. Just be sure that the swim product is the right fit and absorbency level for you to prevent any unfortunate accidents. These products are made to absorb urine from the inside while not taking on water from the outside.Just be sure to change out of your incontinence product for swimming when you leave the water. You can swap your swim product for your regular leak protection until you swim again.Try Other Incontinence Devices for SwimmingYou may prefer to temporarily use an incontinence device while swimming. The two common devices are the pessary (for women) and the penile cuff (for men). The pessary device is inserted into a womans vagina and applies pressure against the urethra, stemming the flow of urine. Its like a tampon but serves a different purpose. It isnt suitable for everyone and may be too uncomfortable, especially at first. Some women prefer this because its discreet and simple. A pessary temporarily reduces leaks to a minimum and gives you great freedom while swimming. The penile cuff compresses a mans urethra so that little to no urine passes through. It is placed about halfway down the penis, and similar to the pessary, greatly reduces the flow of urine. But these should only be used on a short-term basis and must be released every one to two hours, according to the manufacturer. This device isnt for everyone, even though most men report that after the initial adjustment period, they became accustomed to the device and found it relatively comfortable. For some men, using the device is preferable to not swimming or dealing with incontinence swimwear. Both the pessary and penial cuff have side effects if you wear them too long or dont use them correctly. Before using them, get some advice from your primary care doctor or your urologist.Watch What You Eat and Drink Before SwimmingBefore and during your pool or beach outing, you want to avoid irritating your bladder with foods and beverages that arent agreeable. Bladder irritation can make bladder leaks worse or cause overactive bladder. Before and during your water activities, avoid caffeine, alcohol, spicy foods, and acidic foods. Instead, stay hydrated with water and opt for snacks that are easier on your bladder. This will ensure you stay comfortable and dont experience unnecessary bladder leaks while swimming or relaxing by the water.Enjoy Your Summer (Even with Incontinence)Incontinence doesnt mean you must stop living. Summers can still be an enjoyable and memorable time of the year. But a fantastic summer requires some planning ahead and maybe even a few changes to the norm. But were confident it will be worth the effort as you enjoy a relaxed and fun summer.TYE Medical offers premium incontinence products in a variety of sizes and absorbency levels.
