With so many senior living options at so many different price points, it can be hard to know which option is best for you and your loved one. Before making a decision, it’s important to understand the different types of residences available to you—and their associated costs.
When determining senior housing costs, your first step is to decide which type of housing your loved one needs. There are a wide range of options and care services available for senior living, including:
Assisted living is often less expensive than in-home care. Costs will also vary depending on unit size—for example, a studio, versus a one or two-bedroom apartment. The average nationwide cost for a private, one-bedroom apartment in an assisted living residence is about $3,000 per month. And just like general housing, there is a wide difference in senior housing and care costs depending on which part of the country in which you live. Your local Assisted Living Locators Care Advisor can tell you about the costs in your area.
When evaluating senior housing options, be sure to ask about:
Many senior living residents and their families pay for senior housing costs through private financial resources. Long Term Care Insurance (LTCI) is also a way families defray costs. Many communities also operate on a “spend down” model, where the senior pays privately for their housing and care for an agreed upon period of time, and once their financial resources are depleted, they are transitioned into state provided Medicaid assistance. These policies and procedures can vary by state; contact your local Assisted Living Locators Care Advisor in your area for the rules in your community.
When trying to calculate what you can afford for independent retirement, assisted living or dementia/Alzheimer’s care, the place to start is figuring out your current expenses. When a person moves into one of these communities, almost all day to day expenses are covered. Usually, the only additional out-of-pocket costs are a phone, cable, out of pocket medical, and petty cash for entertainment, clothes or sundries.

"Game of Thrones" may have coined the phrase,"Winter is coming," but it's the reality we all face this time of year. The temperature is dropping, and winter's cold, snow, and freezing conditions will soon envelop us.There's always much to do to prepare for cold weather, and you may not realize your air conditioning unit needs some attention. Taking a few extra steps to protect your air conditioning unit will ensure it's ready when you need it again when the heat returns. Winterizing your AC unit protects it from snow, ice, and rust. It also prevents unwanted critters from invading your unit and making it their home for the winter. The process can seem daunting if you've never touched your AC unit before, but it only takes a few minutes and is easier than you think. If your unit is under a tree or in an area where icicles or snow could fall into it, invest in a cover. You don't need a cover over the entire unit, but one that will keep things from falling into the top. Even a piece of plywood can work as a suitable cover. If you have a heat pump however, you shouldn't worry about covering the unit. Before winter arrives, clean your unit to the best of your ability. Remove leaves, twigs, and other debris on top or inside the unit. You can even use a garden hose to rinse the outside. Once you've cleaned it out and are sure the warm weather is over, cut the power supply to your unit. This will ensure your unit doesn't turn on during an unusually warm winter day.Once the cold weather arrives, don't ignore your AC unit until spring returns. Continue to check on it to ensure the cover is doing its job and remove critters nesting below or near it. Replacing and repairing your AC unit can become expensive quickly. Be proactive and winterize your unit to reduce risk and lengthen its lifespan.
Do you have a loved one living in an assisted living facility? Assisted living facilities are residences designed for people who are independent but need some help with daily activities. These facilities can be freestanding communities, part of a retirement community or integrated within nursing homes or hospitals.Assisted living maximizes the dignity and independence of residents while also providing 24-hour supervision. In addition to housing, which can range from a private or shared bedroom to a full apartment, assisted living facilities generally provide meals, housekeeping, transportation, security and activities for residents for a set monthly cost. In addition to monthly costs, personal care services may be provided at an additional charge. Such personal care services could include laundry, medication reminders, or assistance with bathing, dressing, grooming, and ambulating/transferring.While people in assisted living dont require skilled nursing around the clock, they do need help with activities of daily living (ADLs). Depending on the facility and its staffing ratios, your loved one may need additional one-on-one care to complement the care provided by the facility staff. In addition to always being ready to help with ADLs, SYNERGY HomeCares assisted living home care services can provide more regular supervision and companionship as well as encourage your loved one to eat meals or participate in activities. This added layer of support for your loved one living in an assisted living facility can provide you with peace of mind, as well as help reduce the anxiety and agitation your loved one may experience in a new environment. If youre interested in supplemental caregiving, begin by consulting the facilitys administration to understand what services they cover and where a professional caregiver can add the most value. SYNERGY HomeCares assisted living home care services ensure that the caregiver, while working at the facility, will report directly to the loved ones family who contracted their care.In my opinion, this offers the best of both worlds: a safe and secure living situation with the added support of a personalized caregiver.Dr. Macie P.
