How has the Covid-19 pandemic affected home care and what is Collier Home Care doing to keep our clients and caregivers safe and healthy?
Mandatory Testing
Collier Home Care provides one-on-one private duty home care services, such as stand by or hands-on assistance with bathing or showering; dressing; toileting; ambulation; transfers; grooming; feeding; medication reminders; light housekeeping and laundry; errands and driving to appointments to residents who live in senior living environments such as assisted living, skilled nursing rehab, and memory care. Collier Home Care also provides temporary staffing services to senior living facilities. Collier Home Care can provide certified nursing assistants (CNAs), home health aides (HHAs), licensed practical nurses (LPNs), and registered nurses (RNs) when they are experiencing staffing shortages.
Effective July 7, 2020, the Florida Department of Health has required that all nursing home and assisted living facility staff must be tested for COVID-19 and continue to be tested every two weeks thereafter. This includes all private duty caregivers.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Since the beginning of COVID-19, the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) has recommended wearing face masks when individuals are around other people and especially when social distancing (6 feet of distance) is not possible. Its important for caregivers to use a disposable mask when providing personal care with the activities of daily living (ADLs) such as assistance with bathing, showering, toileting, dressing, walking, transferring, feeding, and grooming.
Face coverings can be anything from a homemade face mask to a bandana or even a scarf. For caregivers, a medical-grade face mask must always be worn to keep respiratory droplets contained and from reaching the people they are caring for. And while some may use gardening gloves to visit their local supermarket, caregivers must also have medical grade exam gloves that are to be changed regularly, furthering the worldwide shortage of supplies.
Mental Health of our Seniors
Many senior care facilities have been able to combat the spread of COVID-19 in their facilities, if not totally keep the virus from entering through its doors through continued isolation of their residents. While this keeps their residents safe from infection from a foreign source, it also deprives them of visits from their loved ones. Family members must stand outside their parents or grandparents windows and wave at them from a distance, which provides their loved one with some solace, but is often not satisfactory. Caregivers can no longer take their clients on outings such as clothes shopping or going out to a meal without the fear of getting infected. This can make it challenging to provide mental and physical stimulation to keep clients active, engaged, and healthy.
How has Collier Home Care risen to the challenges we all face from the Covid-19 pandemic?
Collier Home Care has implemented the following measures to keep our clients and caregivers healthy and safe:

We provided PPE (disposable gloves and disposable masks) to our clients and caregivers.
We provided a Service Plan addendum to all clients with the following suggestions:

The caregiver is to use a mask and disposable gloves when proving personal care to the client.
The caregiver to sanitize and then wipe with water all food containers, prescriptions bottles, and other packaging prior to opening; caregiver to wash hands prior to meal prep if needed.
Caregiver to wash hands for 30 seconds with soap and water upon entering and leaving the clients home.
Caregiver to keep hands away from their face, mouth, nose, and eyes while in the home.
Caregiver to disinfect surfaces and keep home environment tidy, clean, and sanitized as time allows and as permitted by the client. For activities that dont require close proximity, the caregiver should maintain social distancing (6 feet of distance from the client).
Caregiver to limit unnecessary outings where clients would encounter others; caregivers to encourage social distancing and use of PPE when social distancing is not possible.
Caregiver to open all mail packaging and envelopes outside the home and discard packaging prior to re-entering home; wash hands.
The caregiver to take the clients body temperature each visit or as tolerated and monitor for fever, shortness of breath/ respiratory issues, and cough.
The caregiver to complete Covid-19 Self-Care Log daily prior to arrival at any shift with the client and immediately report any symptoms to the Collier Home Care office at (239) 920-3902.
Due to the surge in Covid-19 cases in Florida, we have decided to take additional measures with the goal of keeping everyone safe and healthy.
Effective Monday, July 6, all actively working caregivers are required to get the Covid-19 antibody test every two (2) weeks and provide our office with a copy of the results. In the event that a caregiver experiences symptoms at any time or tests positive for antibodies, he or she is to notify our office immediately and get a swab test done to determine if there is a current infection. The caregiver will be removed from providing any care until the office can verify a negative swab test result.
To date, we are not aware of any clients, caregivers, or administrative staff that have tested positive for Covid-19 and we wish to keep it that way. Collier Home Careis determined to keep all our clients and caregivers safe and healthy, both physically and mentally, during these trying times. Please contact us with any questions you may have about our at-home care services or what were doing to limit the spread of Covid-19.

Be Aware of Heat Related Illness

Be Aware of Heat Related IllnessEven for seniors who are used to living year round in the Florida heat and humidity, heat-related illnesses can be a real concern. Especially in Florida, with warm weather year round, and humidity always sneaking into the forecast for the day, it is a concern. Heat-related illnesses are something to be aware of, especially for senior citizens. Fortunately, heat-related illnesses are preventable, so being aware of them is a key to avoiding them. Here are some things to keep in mind as you try to steer clear of and navigate heat-related illnesses.Seniors Can Be Impacted MoreThough heat-related illness can strike anyone out in the blazing hot sun or stifling humidity, older adults are often more susceptible for several reasons and do not adjust as well to changes in temperatures as younger people. One of the reasons they may have difficulty is because of chronic illnesses that impact the way they react to heat and impact their perspiration ability. Many senior citizens also are taking medications that can impact their bodys reaction, especially by changing their ability to control their bodys temperature and their ability to sweat.Be Aware of These SignsTo help avoid the seriousness that can accompany heat-related illnesses, it is important to know the signs that heat may be impacting you negatively, and more than just simply tiring you out. If you notice any of these signs, move to a cool location or in some cases call for medical assistance. Heat-related illnesses can be serious, and even fatal, if not addressed.High body temperature of 103 degrees or moreHeavy sweatingHeadacheHot, dry, red or damp skin, or cold, pale and clammy skinConfusionDizzinessElevated pulseLoss of ConsciousnessMuscle crampsTiredness or weaknessWays to Avoid Heat IssuesTo help avoid heat-related illnesses, the first priority is to stay cool and hydrated. You, of course, can take a walk out in the Florida sun - after all thats probably part of the reason you live here - to enjoy the endless sunny days. But if its going to be blazing hot that day, you may want to take your walk earlier or later in the day. And no matter when you go, bring along something to keep you hydrated, such as water or drinks with electrolytes. An important tip is to hydrate even before you head out, so your body isnt already feeling dehydrated before you even hit the sun. Even if you dont feel thirsty, take some swigs to get the hydration into your body. If your doctor has limited the amount of liquids you can drink, make sure to check with your medical provider before changing anything up.If you are heading outside on an extra hot day, you may want to keep the exercise a little more low impact. Save the strenuous activity for cooler days, or cooler parts of the day. Loose fitting clothing is also a way to help avoid heat-related impacts, so that your clothes, socks or shoes do not trap in the heat. A wide-brimmed hat or a visor, though, are great accessories to have when you are heading out into the heat and the sunshine.Another accessory you will also probably want to wear is sunscreen. The CDC says that sunburn impacts your bodys ability to cool down and can make you dehydrated. Avoiding sunburn with sunscreen can help with this issue. When its super hot out, make sure you are cooling off in air conditioning, especially if you are going to be spending part of the day outside. A fan often isnt enough to cool the body, especially on days with high humidity. A cooling shower or bath can also help if you feel overheated. An easy way to cool off is to run a cool cloth under water, and to put it on your head after you come inside. To prepare, you also can freeze a cloth before you leave for your activity, and bring it along to cool yourself on your journey. If you do notice any signs of a heat-related illness, move to a cool area. Some can be life threatening, so seek medical help immediately if needed.Visiting Angels Can HelpHeat-related illnesses are just one of the challenges seniors face. The Importance of Regular Health Check-ups for Seniors

In the journey through the golden years, regular health check-ups emerge as a cornerstone of proactive senior care, offering a vital means of maintaining overall well-being. As our bodies naturally undergo changes with age, routine health examinations become essential for early detection and prevention of potential health issues. Regular check-ups enable healthcare professionals to monitor key indicators such as blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and glucose levels, providing invaluable insights into an individual's cardiovascular and metabolic health. Detecting and addressing these factors early on can significantly reduce the risk of chronic conditions, ensuring seniors can lead healthier and more active lives. Moreover, regular health check-ups serve as a proactive approach to holistic senior care, encompassing not only physical but also mental well-being. Cognitive health assessments, screenings for conditions like osteoporosis, and discussions about mental health concerns are integral components of these check-ups. By fostering open communication between seniors and healthcare providers, these examinations create opportunities for personalized care plans and the management of age-related health challenges. In essence, the importance of regular health check-ups for seniors extends beyond the diagnosis of illnesses; it embodies a commitment to preventive care, early intervention, and the promotion of a higher quality of life in the later years.
