We all know that getting a good night’s sleep is vital to a healthy mind and body. Although you may experience more trouble with falling asleep than in your younger years, getting healthy sleep is just as important in your golden years. Since ancient times, people have been making use of bedtime teas to help them get a better night’s sleep. In this article, you can find out more about some teas you can try if you are looking to get a better night’s sleep.

Lavender Tea

Lavender is widely used in aromatherapy for relaxation purposes. When your body relaxes, you are able to let go of the tension in your mind, which is essential for getting good sleep. Let the soothing aroma of lavender reduce any anxiety you feel and help you unwind before bed.

Lemon Balm Tea

Do you struggle with falling asleep or staying asleep? If you suffer from chronic sleep problems, lemon balm tea is just what you need. This minty tea has a sweet and citrusy scent and has been used as a remedy to fight infections throughout history. It can also be obtained as an essential oil if you prefer. The calming effect of lemon balm can reduce any anxiety you experience before bed and help you rest your mind.

Peppermint Tea

One plus point of peppermint tea is that it contains little to no caffeine. This guilt-free tea can also be used to relieve muscle tension and ease any stomach pains. It has the added benefit of easing tension headaches and migraines and reducing nasal congestion.

Passionflower Tea

Did you know that passionflower tea has been used as sleeping draughts historically? Because it contains flavonoids that bind to receptors in the brain, it can help to reduce anxiety. This can be very helpful if that’s the reason you struggle to sleep. A cup before bedtime can go a long way in helping you sleep better.

Chamomile Tea

Mention bedtime teas and the first one that comes to mind may very well be chamomile tea. If it has been working for you, great! You may wish to try some of the other teas on the list to keep things exciting. Chamomile tea comes with many health benefits, including the treatment of sleep ailments. The chemical compounds found within chamomile tea bind to receptors in the brand to reduce anxiety, promote a sense of calmness, and encourage good sleep.

Stay Ahead This Flu Season with Prevention & Care

By Dr. Myron Kwan, Board-Certified Internal Medicine Specialist at Millennium Physician GroupAs we approach winter, flu season is upon us. The holidays are a time for family, friends, joy, and celebration. Unfortunately, it is also the time of year when flu activity tends to peak. Understanding the cause of the flu, how it spreads, and how to protect yourself and your family is essential to staying healthy during this time of year.At Millennium Physician Group, we believe in the importance of flu prevention and educating our patients on how to stay healthy all year round. Whether you are thinking about getting a flu shot, trying to understand your symptoms, or looking for ways to avoid the flu, heres what you need to know. What is the Flu and How Does it Spread?Flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. The disease can infect the nose, throat, and sometimes the lungs, causing a range of mild to severe symptoms that typically come on suddenly. For some people, the flu can be debilitating, leading to serious complications and even death. The flu spreads mainly through minuscule droplets released when someone infected coughs, sneezes, or speaks. These droplets can then land in the mouths or noses of people nearby, with close contact as a primary method of transmission. Flu viruses can also survive on surfaces for 24 to 48 hours. This means touching a contaminated surface and then touching your nose, mouth, or eyes is a possible method of infection.Flu Prevention MattersFlu season typically peaks between December and February, but it is possible to have outbreaks anytime during the year. Staying current on flu cases in your community can help you know if and when you should get your flu vaccine. Each year, the vaccine is created to protect against the most common strains of influenza expected during that particular flu season.Even if youve had the flu or received a flu shot before, its crucial to get vaccinated each year. The flu vaccine is recommended for everyone 6 months and older. Its important to note that the flu shot does not stop you from getting the flu. If you do get the flu after being vaccinated, it can reduce the severity of symptoms and the duration of the illness.Additional flu prevention tips include:      Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.      Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze to avoid spreading germs.      Avoid close contact with people who are sick, and stay home if youre not feeling well.      Avoid touching your face and disinfect solid surfaces that may carry germs, like your cell phone. What to Watch For: Common Flu SymptomsWhile anyone can get the flu, certain groups are at higher risk for developing serious flu-related complications. This includes children under 5 years old and adults 65 years and older, as well as pregnant women and people with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher. Additionally, people with chronic medical conditions like asthma, diabetes, or heart and lung disease should take preventative measures during flu season. If any high-risk individuals develop flu symptoms, they should seek medical attention immediately.Flu symptoms can seem like they appear out of nowhere and include:      Fever or Chills (although not everyone experiences a fever)      -Cough      -Sore Throat     - Runny or stuffy nose      -Muscle or body aches      -Headache      -Fatigue      -Vomiting and diarrhea (commonly in children)If you or a loved one experiences these symptoms, its important to talk to your doctor about treatment and take steps to prevent spreading the disease. What to Do if You Get SickFlu symptoms can be similar to the common cold. While both are respiratory illnesses, the flu is more likely to cause fever, body aches, fatigue, and severe respiratory symptoms. Colds are usually milder with fewer severe symptoms. If youre unsure whether you have the flu or cold, its best to consult with your healthcare provider. They may recommend you get tested or prescribe antiviral medications. Antiviral medications are only available as a prescription and may reduce the severity and length of symptoms and prevent serious complications. Rest and drinking plenty of fluids can also help you recover quickly. This stay might be a form of relief for primary caregivers who are going away or will otherwise be unavailable for a time. Some seniors need assistance at home on a daily basis. If their caregiver is unable to care for them for several days, they can arrange for respite care in a senior living community. These stays could last for a few days or a few weeks. Respite care provides peace of mind for the caregiver as well as giving the senior opportunities to interact with others. In many senior living communities, there are opportunities for group activities. You also might choose respite care for your loved one if they are recovering from a surgery, a joint replacement procedure, stroke, or another medical event. Recovering from a medical event can require more care than can be provided in-home. Caregiving can be a full-time job. Senior respite care provides relief so that you can continue caring for your loved one in the future with renewed energy. At Discovery Village, your loved one will be in the care of trained, experienced team members. Theyll enjoy our on-site amenities, meals cooked from scratch, and 24/7 medical care. What You'll Find in Discovery Villages Senior Respite CareRespite care is a fine choice for those recovering from a medical procedure or for those whose caregivers will be away.
