As we move through life, we accumulate objects that tell the story of who we are and the relationships we’ve cherished. For seniors, these items often hold even deeper meaning—each photo, letter, and memento carries with it a lifetime of memories. But over time, these treasured possessions can become overwhelming, taking up space and creating clutter. The challenge lies in finding ways to honor these memories while maintaining a home that feels organized, peaceful, and comfortable.

At A Call to Order Professional Organizers, we understand that decluttering is not just about making space; it’s about preserving the essence of what matters most. Our goal is to help you organize your most precious senior possessions with love and respect, creating a living environment that reflects your unique journey. In this blog, we’ll explore how to thoughtfully organize keepsakes so that they’re both accessible and lovingly preserved for years to come.

Curating Your Collection with Care
When it comes to organizing treasured possessions, it’s important to approach the process with care and intention. Each item holds a memory, a connection, or a piece of history, so the goal is not to discard these items, but to thoughtfully curate a collection that truly represents your life’s most meaningful moments.

Step 1: Begin with Reflection

Before diving into the organization process, take some time to reflect on which items hold the most emotional value. Sorting through personal belongings can be a deeply emotional experience, so it’s essential to go at your own pace. Ask yourself: Which items make you smile when you see them? Which ones carry stories you want to share with loved ones? This initial reflection helps you identify the objects that deserve a place of honor in your home.

Step 2: Categorize Your Keepsakes

Once you’ve selected your most precious items, it’s helpful to categorize them. Group similar items together, such as family photos, letters from loved ones, travel souvenirs, or heirlooms passed down through generations. This process allows you to see what you have and makes it easier to decide how to display or store them.

At A Call to Order, we guide our clients through this process, helping them sort through their possessions with empathy and care. We understand that parting with certain items can be difficult, so we focus on keeping what truly matters while organizing in a way that feels manageable and comforting.

Step 3: Display with Purpose
For many seniors, having their most meaningful items on display is a way to keep memories alive. Whether it’s a shadow box of family heirlooms, a curated photo wall, or a memory shelf filled with travel mementos, displaying items thoughtfully can bring daily joy. Consider rotating your collection—putting some keepsakes on display for a season, while safely storing others for future enjoyment. This way, your living space doesn’t feel cluttered, but still reflects your life’s rich tapestry of memories.

Safekeeping and Sharing Your Legacy
After organizing your cherished possessions, it’s just as important to ensure their safekeeping and plan how to pass them along to future generations. Preserving your legacy can be a deeply fulfilling process, and A Call to Order can help you every step of the way.

Step 1: Create a Safe Storage System

For items that are not on display, having an organized storage system is key to keeping them safe and accessible. Use labeled, archival-quality boxes to store fragile items like old photographs, letters, or documents. These containers are designed to protect against deterioration and ensure that your keepsakes stay in excellent condition. Be sure to label boxes or storage bins clearly so that you and your family can easily locate items when the time comes to reminisce or share memories.

Step 2: Digitize Important Memories
One way to ensure the longevity of your precious possessions is by digitizing them. Old photos, important documents, and even handwritten letters can be scanned and saved digitally, providing peace of mind that these memories won’t be lost to time. Digital copies can also be shared with family members, allowing everyone to enjoy them without the risk of losing the originals. A Call to Order can help you set up a digital archive, ensuring that your most important memories are preserved for generations to come.

Step 3: Share Your Story with Loved Ones
Perhaps the most rewarding aspect of organizing your treasured keepsakes is the opportunity to share your life’s journey with family and friends. Consider creating memory albums or scrapbooks for each child or grandchild, filled with photos and personal stories that reflect your time together. Not only does this preserve your legacy, but it also strengthens bonds and creates a meaningful connection between generations.

Additionally, passing along family heirlooms or special possessions can be a beautiful way to keep your legacy alive. If there are items you’ve always intended to pass down, take the time now to write a note about the history and significance of each one. These notes add an extra layer of meaning to the heirloom, ensuring that the story behind the object is never forgotten.

At A Call to Order Professional Organizers, we know that organizing your most precious senior possessions is about more than decluttering—it’s about honoring your past, preserving your legacy, and creating a space that reflects the love and memories you’ve gathered over the years. With thoughtful care and personalized guidance, we help seniors curate, protect, and share their treasured keepsakes, ensuring that the essence of their lives is preserved for generations to come.

Whether you’re looking to display your favorite memories, create a safe storage system, or pass along cherished heirlooms to loved ones, A Call to Order is here to support you in every step of the journey. Let us help you turn your collection of treasures into a beautifully organized legacy that will be treasured by generations to come.

4 Myths About Home Caregiving Services, Debunked By Maria Burke, RN, Owner, Celtic Angels Home Health Care

Many families may be reluctant to hire home care partners because of widely held, but frequently untrue impressions of what home caregiving services are like based on things theyve heard. But the truth is, much of that talk is inaccurate. The truth is home caregiving services often improve quality of life for both seniors and their families. Lets separate fact from fiction with these four myths about home caregiving services, debunked.1. Myth: Home Caregiving Services Are Too ExpensiveOften, families are reluctant to use home caregiving services because they believe it would be too expensive. And they are often unaware that insurance covers many necessary home caregiving services.  In reality, home caregiving services are far less expensive than nursing home care. Comparatively, it makes good financial sense to opt for home caregiving services. Plus, home caregiving services allow your beloved senior to stay in a familiar place surrounded by people who love them, and that has so many benefits in terms of comfort and ease for your loved one.2. Myth: Home Caregiving Services Are Inferior to Assisted Living or Nursing Home CareAnother common myth about home caregiving services is that they are inferior to assisted living or nursing home care. As a result, families often believe that their loved one will receive better or more consistent care in a nursing home. But this isnt the case.  Indeed, home caregiving services allow you to be involved and aware of the services your loved one receives in a way that is different if your beloved senior resides in a facility. Furthermore, home caregiving staff are fully trained, certified and bonded and have extensive qualifications. And importantly, your senior loved one will receive undivided attention rather than being one of many patients in a facility. 3. Myth: Home Caregiving Services Place Seniors at RiskFamilies often worry that choosing home caregiving services will place their beloved seniors at risk. In reality, however, home caregiving services can often be safer than assisted living or nursing home options. Since you are in charge of the staff you select, you can fully screen them and choose a person that best fits your loved ones needs, personality and expectations.  Your loved one isnt exposed to the same risks as they would be in communal living. The COVID-19 pandemic was a tragic example of just how unsafe assisted living and nursing home facilities can be. Indeed, when seniors live in large groups and often without adequate numbers of staff, it can be foster an environment where communal diseases spread. Thats something your senior loved one is far less likely to experience when living in their own home.4. Myth: I Should Do All Caregiving MyselfCare partners too often place a heavy burden on themselves by attempting to do 100% of the care their senior loved one needs. This leads to burnout and can strain family relationships at a time when both you and your senior loved one would prefer to enjoy quality time together. And often, this is a result of believing the myth that your senior loved one wont be comfortable or safe with anyone else. However, this isnt the case. In fact, home caregiving services give both you and your senior loved one a much-needed break. And because you choose your care partner, you can ensure that both you and your beloved senior are comfortable with the person providing their care.   At Celtic Angels, Inc., we take your beloved seniors safety and comfort seriously. Thats why we fully vet and train each of our care partners, and we always tailor care to your unique situation. If you are interested in exploring home caregiving services for your senior loved one, we encourage you to schedule a no-cost, no-obligation meeting with our care partners in your home. Please visit us at www.celticangelsinc.com

For seniors, it often involves leaving behind a home filled with memories. Recognizing this emotional landscape is critical to ensuring a positive experience. Here are some strategies to create a supportive atmosphere during this transition.Acknowledge the Importance of MemoriesWhen helping seniors move, it's vital to acknowledge their emotional ties to their belongings. Encourage them to take time to reflect on the items that hold sentimental value. This process can serve as a beautiful trip down memory lane and allows them to decide what they wish to keep or let go.Create a Memory Book: Before packing, set aside time to create a memory book. Encourage seniors to write down their favorite stories associated with significant items. This can not only help in the decluttering process but will also preserve those memories for future generations.Invite Family Participation: Engage family members in the process. When loved ones join in, it not only provides emotional support but can also help in making decisions about what stays and what goes. Sharing stories about the past can strengthen family bonds and create a sense of togetherness.Celebrate Transition with Meaning: Instead of framing the move as a loss, frame it as a new beginning. Host a small farewell gathering where friends and family can share their favorite memories about the home and celebrate the individual's new journey.Creating a Warm and Inviting New SpaceOnce the decision to move has been made, its time to think about how to infuse warmth and familiarity into the new environment. Creating a comfortable and inviting space is crucial for helping seniors feel settled and at ease.Thoughtful Organizing and DesignPersonalize the New Space: As professional organizers, we emphasize the importance of making a new space feel personal. Encourage seniors to bring their most cherished itemsphotos, artwork, or heirloomsto decorate their new environment. This will provide a sense of continuity and comfort.Focus on Functionality: Think about the daily routines of seniors and how their new space can best accommodate them. Arrange furniture for ease of movement, and keep frequently used items easily accessible. Consider integrating features like illuminated pathways to avoid falls and make the space more user-friendly.Incorporate Familiar Colors and Textures: Use familiar colors or textures that evoke pleasant memories. A favorite blanket or a well-loved chair can spark comfort and familiarity, making the new space feel like home.Create Cozy Gathering Spots: Ensure there are comfortable areas to gather with family and friends. How a Little Risk Can Make Seniors a Lot Healthier and Happier

Seniors have earned their safety net of Social Security and Medicare, but to truly thrive they need to move beyond the well-planned life to add something unexpected: personal risk.  Its one of the oddest twists of modern society Americans spend most of their lives being encouraged to work hard to do difficult things. As soon as we hit a certain age, though, its all about easing up and backing off. Grandma, take a break! Give it a rest, Grandpa! You dont want to chance a fall there! The problem is, weve become so preoccupied with surplus safety at all times for seniors that we have stripped away too many of the surprises and unexpected twists that make life worth living. Is it any wonder that seniors now are battling an epidemic of boredom, depression, and loneliness? Few people of any age find meaning and purpose in doing the same thing, at the same time, in the same way, every day. We need to mix it up and try something new a physical challenge, a different setting, a new learned skill.  As a career nurse and chief executive of a complete senior health company, I know that the only risk-free environment is a coffin. No point rushing our way into there. One of the best solutions to bring risk to seniors is to borrow an idea from the younger generations. Seniors should go gaming.  No, grandparents may not want to take up Minecraft, Fortnite, or Call of Duty. (Though if they want to try it, by all means, go for it.)  Im also not a big fan of one traditional eldergame, namely, bingo, which is too much about luck and not enough about skill and performance mastery as a source of motivation. There is little in bingo that offers true risks or competition to benefit others.  The better games promote the physical and mental skills that can go unexercised as people grow older. For families and friends, an excellent plan is to tap into the data collected by Apple watches and Fitbit-style fitness trackers. How many steps a day can you record? How many days a week can you record steps that meet your goal? Instead of making it an individual competition, we see better gains and more fun overall when people are assigned to a team.  A team competition makes you responsible to others, not just yourself. Its human nature to push yourself harder when others are relying on you. Maybe the team is made up of family and loved ones. Maybe its friends and neighbors. The overall goal is to get everyone accountable and moving.   In our own health business, we have 1,000 seniors, aged 60s to 100 and up, who compete in Spark Performances, which include an annual TRY-athlon Tournament, a remote-control National Forklift Racing League, and The Grip Games. There also is the Spark Challenge, where community teams battle for the league championship using walkers, stationary bikes, and arm cranks. Every week the 32 teams in the league tune in to The Really Big Show, an ESPN-style Sports Center wrapup that features results and league standings. Established powerhouse teams are the Dragonflies, Cardinals, and River Rats. The competition is fueled by a $32,000 tournament purse. Of course, not everyone can do the more physically demanding tasks though a 95-year-old is one of our leading hallway runners but every team has a place for someone, including coaches, statisticians, and cheerleaders.  How is it safe to have great-grandmothers running down hallways in walkers? The truth is, its not completely safe. But thats the point. And its also really fun.  A few weeks ago, an 80+ woman was competing in the hallway run when she slipped, fell, and cut her knee. In the emergency room, the doctor asked her how the injury happened. I fell in a triathlon, she replied.  The doctor thought she was joking until the woman asked to be patched up as quickly as possible, so she could complete her remaining two events. She was extremely proud and definitely adamant she really, really did not want to let down her team.  What she saw was a chance to win. What our medical team saw was strength, purpose, and belonging. Whether in a senior community or in life, aging is a team sport. As our years go up, we depend more on others to reach our goals. Our team may include family, friends, medical professionals, or even a fellow hallway racer on a walker. Well do better together, if only we take that risk to challenge our minds and bodies with something new.  Joel Theisen, BSN, RN, is founder and chief executive of Lifespark, a Minnesota- based complete senior health company.
