t Park Royal, we understand that addiction is a disease that requires constant vigilance as well as the most effective treatments available. We’ve learned that the best approach to helping an individual who struggles with addiction is a combination of detox, medication, and various therapies provided in a safe and comfortable rehab setting. When you come to our prescription drug rehab center, you’ll undergo a complete physical and psychological examination to determine how addicted you are to prescription drugs as well as any co-occurring mental disorders. If it’s determined that you need detox to rid your body of the drugs this will be your first step before joining the recovery program at our addiction treatment center.

Our detox program at our prescription drug addiction treatment and rehab center is performed under the watchful eye of our trained medical staff to make sure that you are safely and effectively detoxed from any drugs that may be in your system. We will make sure to explain everything we are doing before we do it so that there are no surprises during this part of your recovery. Medication will be used to manage unpleasant withdrawal symptoms as needed. When you have been successfully detoxed, you’ll be ready to join our inpatient prescription drug addiction treatment and rehab program.

Medications may be prescribed for you initially to control the unpleasantness of withdrawal symptoms. Most people are able to slowly taper down the medications as they develop more adaptive coping mechanisms. Others may use medications for the long-term to manage co-occurring disorders such as depression or bipolar disorder. The usage of medication in your rehab will be up to you and your treatment team. In addition to detoxification and medication management for prescription drug addiction, we also offer a variety of therapeutic approaches at our prescription drug addiction treatment and rehab centee to assist in your recovery.

Group therapy is the primary focus of treatment and rehab at Park Royal and is considered to be one of the most effective ways to work through prescription drug addiction-related issues. Group sessions allow you the opportunity to connect with other individuals who are struggling with addiction in order to understand that you are not alone. The support of others is vital to those who are coping with newfound sobriety. We offer a number of daily groups at our prescription drug addiction treatment and rehab center including process-based and psycho-educational groups, all of which will allow you to learn more about addiction, co-occurring disorders, relapse prevention, and avoiding triggers.

We use individual therapy at our fort Myers addiction rehab center to allow you the time to discuss the impact prescription drug addiction and co-occurring disorders has had on your life. You’ll have one-on-one time with a therapist to share your struggles and concerns as well as focusing upon ways of restoring hope and joy into your life.

Home for the Holidays: Making Senior Spaces Merry and Bright

As the holiday season approaches, many of us begin to embrace the spirit of joy and togetherness. For seniors, this time of year can evoke a special blend of nostalgia and excitement, providing an opportunity to create new memories with loved ones. However, the stress of clutter can overshadow the joy of the holidays. At A Call to Order Professional Organizer, we believe that a serene environment not only enhances well-being but also fosters connection with family and friends. In this blog, well explore effective ways to declutter senior spaces, ensuring that their homes radiate warmth and love during this festive season.Decluttering: A Gift of JoyDecluttering can often seem like a daunting task, especially for seniors who may have accumulated items over the years that carry sentimental value. Yet, creating an organized space doesnt have to be overwhelming. Instead, think of it as a gift that promotes a joyful atmosphere. Tip 1: Start Small and Focus on SentimentalityBegin the decluttering process by encouraging seniors to focus on one area at a time. It could be a specific room, a closet, or even a single drawer. The key is to keep the experience manageable and non-stressful. A good practice is to ask them to sort items into three categories: keep, donate, and discard. When it comes to sentimental items, its important to approach them with care. Suggest they take photographs of items that hold memories instead of keeping every single piece. This way, they can cherish the memories without physical clutter. Setting aside a memories box for truly cherished items can also provide a sense of connection to the past while keeping their environment open and welcoming.Tip 2: Enlist HelpDont hesitate to involve family members in this process. The holidays are all about togetherness, and tackling this task as a family can create new memories while lightening the load. Each family member can take responsibility for specific areas, making the decluttering process enjoyable. Don't forget treats and encouragement to maintain a festive mood!Creating a Welcoming AtmosphereOnce the decluttering is underway, its time to enhance the space for the holiday season. A peaceful and organized environment can significantly improve the seniors mood and overall well-being. Tip 3: Seasonal Decor with HeartIncorporate decorations that evoke joy and warmth. Encourage seniors to choose decorations that hold special meaning for them. This can include handmade ornaments or family heirlooms. A simple touch like a festive tablecloth or hanging twinkling lights can instantly convert a room into a cheerful gathering space without overwhelming them with excess decorations.Additionally, consider the sensory elements of the home. Scents can profoundly influence emotions, so adding a holiday-themed scented candle or simmering potpourri can ignite nostalgic feelings while creating a sense of warmth. Tip 4: Create a Cozy Gathering SpaceThe heart of the home truly shines during the holidays, so lets make sure theres a cozy, inviting space for family and friends to gather. This could be a living room, dining area, or even a cozy corner with comfy chairs and warm blankets. Arrange seating to encourage conversation and connection. A well-organized space will help reduce anxiety and allow everyone to relax and enjoy each others company. If possible, gently advocate for the rearranging of furniture to create an open layout that accommodates guests and fosters a spirit of togetherness.Embracing the Holiday SpiritThe holiday season is a time for love and connection, and nothing creates a more welcoming atmosphere than an organized, clutter-free space. By embracing decluttering as a joyful gift and creating a warm ambiance, we empower seniors to celebrate the holidays in a way that fills their hearts with peace and joy.At A Call to Order Professional Organizer, we understand that the joy of the season can be overshadowed by the anxieties of clutter. With thoughtful guidance and strategies, we can help support seniors in their journey toward a merry and bright holiday experience. Lets work together to make this holiday season one to remember for seniors and their families, creating an environment where precious memories can flourish.Remember, the essence of the holidays lies not in perfection but in love, connection, and shared moments. Here's to making every home a special place during this season of joy!

Congestive Heart Failure is the Number One Reason For Hospitalizations Amongst Older Adults: "What We Dont Know We Dont Know in Health Care

Introduction: I felt strongly compelled to write this blog on heart failure as it is such a pertinent issue in the aging population today. Before I go into details on this, Id like to address the definition of this disease process. Heart failure occurs when the heart doesnt pump well and fails to deliver adequate oxygen to the body. As a result, fluid builds up in the body and vital organs dont get the blood that they need. This can make it harder for individuals to perform everyday tasks and can lead to eventual overall decline. Problem:Heart failure is the number one reason for hospital admissions in older adults, and often leads to multiple readmissions (Agarwal et. al., 2021). As a cardiac nurse for many years, I can attest to the fact that heart failure is the biggest reason for multiple hospitalizations in seniors. Patients come in and out for problematic symptoms, sometimes coming into the hospital as often as every month. The three biggest symptoms I see that result in hospital admissions are shortness of breath (particularly when lying flat), weight gain, and swelling in the legs. One reason for such frequent admissions is the complexity of heart failure itself. It is a complicated clinical syndrome and is notoriously difficult to manage. A lot is put on patients to manage their heart failure at home, and this can be a challenge. In addition, individuals may have some level of cognitive impairment or multiple other comorbidities, making it even more challenging to perform the extensive monitoring needed to prevent heart failure from worsening. The importance of education:Education is also important in the treatment of heart failure. Unfortunately, this often does not get done. When I first started working in acute care back in 2004, every patient received extensive education in managing their heart failure prior to discharge. Nurses would provide lengthy verbal education on the importance of medication adherence, daily weights, low salt diet, and other factors, in addition to providing the patient with a heart failure educational pamphlet prior to discharge. Over the years, however, hospitals have increasingly faced staffing shortages and high nurse turnover. As a result, a lot of important patient education is not getting addressed. A lack of awareness and understanding in patients on how to manage their heart failure is definitely a key reason for worsening heart failure and repeated hospitalizations. Management:From a clinician standpoint, the goal in addressing heart failure is twofold: we want to reduce symptoms and prevent mortality. The best way to do this is through patient/family education and implementation of a treatment plan. A proper treatment plan will include such lifestyle modifications as a low salt diet, quitting smoking, and getting regular physical activity. A low salt diet can be incredibly helpful in preventing further fluid build up in the body. The American Heart Association recommends that all individuals consume no more than 2,300 mg of sodium per day (AHA, 2024). In todays era of processed and packaged food, a majority of the American population consumes much more than that, and it comes in the food itself rather than the saltshaker. Maintaining a low sodium diet has one other priceless benefit that I often do not see emphasized enough in heart failure: it can help reduce blood pressure. Almost half of all heart failure patients have uncontrolled hypertension (Heart Failure, 2022). It is a major risk factor in the development of heart failure and managing it can greatly reduce heart failure symptoms and decrease stress on the heart. Current guidelines recommend maintaining a systolic blood pressure of less than 130. Medication management is another important factor in the management of heart failure. This often includes the use of diuretics, beta blockers, and other medication classes that I will not go into detail on. I wanted to discuss diuretics and beta blockers because these are the two medications in heart failure that I see non-compliance with the most. I witness individuals often not taking one or the other for two main reasons:  they either dont understand the importance of them or they dont like the side effects. Seniors can often have difficulty getting up to go to the restroom. Diuretics cause frequent trips to the restroom because their purpose is to get excess fluid off the body. Many individuals do not comply with their prescribed diuretic because of the hassle of frequent bathroom trips. Unfortunately, ineffective diuresis causes heart failure to worsen and puts further stress on the heart. I often see non-adherence to beta blockers due to their side effects. The two biggest symptoms that get reported to me are fatigue and dizziness. As in the diuretic, a beta blocker can also help reduce the stress on the heart, and heart failure symptoms can worsen if the prescribed dose is not adhered to. Its important to maintain prescribed medication regime and if any negative symptoms are experienced to discuss them with the doctor. One final thing:I wanted to touch on one final monitoring recommendation for heart failure because it so often gets missed: daily weights. Weighing oneself daily is of tantamount importance in heart failure and can identify early on if heart failure is worsening. This can lead to early intervention, thus decreasing potential hospitalization. Adherence to this all too often does not occur. I see patients come into the hospital for large amounts of weight gain often 20 or more lbs. Many patients report that they never stepped on the scale to assess for weight gain and often do not get admitted to the hospital until symptoms are severe such as severe weakness and shortness of breath. In heart failure its recommended to contact the doctor if weight goes up by more than 2 pounds in a day or greater than 4 pounds in a week. The doctor can make modifications in the treatment regime and hence reduce potential hospitalizations and mortality. Conclusion:Heart failure is complex but manageable. Early action can prevent hospital admissions, reduce mortality, and optimize quality of life. Having ongoing guidance from an experienced clinician can be of great benefit if you or your loved one is having difficulty managing heart failure and other disease processes.
