VERY IMPORTANT: Regarding Medicare it is illegal for an insurance agent to call, text, e-mail, knock on your door, hang anything on your door or vehicle or approach you without your consent. If they do ask for their National Producer Number NPN, and you will hear a click and removed from their list. If they dont hang up, get their number and report them to Medicare. There is so much fraud where people are being switched to plans that they never approved or they were miss led. Shop local, do background checks before you give anyone your personal information. You can google them, google reviews, check their Facebook, etc. Make sure that if you are working with someone you can call them personally if you have any questions or concerns. Medicare Annual Enrollment is October 15-December 7th for January 1st, 2027, effective. What can be changed at this time is Medicare Part D Drug Plans and Medicare Part C (Advantage Plans). You should have received your Notification of Change from your current insurance plan. This outlines the current year to the new year changes, as an example if your specialist provider costs $20 now it might say $35 in 2027 (no correlation just an example). Medicare Part C / Advantage Plans, most carriers have raised out of pocket limits and copays along with decreased extra value benefits for 2027. Annually Medicare Advantage Plans make changes. They must all include the same features as Original Medicare but not at the same cost share. They can have a premium, Medical and or Prescription deductible, copays and coinsurance can change. Extra Value such as Vision, Dental, Over the Counter, Part B Give Back, transportation, etc. can all change or be eliminated. Medicare sets the annual in-network out of pocket maximum; in 2026 it is $9,250 for in-network and $13,900 out-of-network services combined (2027 this will increase). However, individual insurance plans may set lower limits. The old saying if it is not broken do not fix it DOES NOT apply to Annual Enrollment. Every year I see many people that have not checked/compared their current plan to what is new. I have saved so many people hundreds and in many cases thousands of dollars. You should be working with a broker that represents many insurance companies. Make sure you check them out, especially if you are going to allow someone in your house. I recommend meeting in their office. For me we represent most insurance carriers in our area and carrying all their literature with me is almost impossible. We use three large screens so that our clients can clearly see and compare the differences between the plans. The minimum information always needed is all your doctors, medications: names, milligrams, and dosage. We load your current plan and then compare it to all the other companies in your area. What companies have all your doctors, the price for your medication normally makes a significant difference. Then the Extra Value is what is most important to you. We do NOT CHARGE for your review and if warranted to change your insurance plan. Ethics is most important and if you are on the best plan we will tell you, plus you can see for yourself. If your plan was CANCELLED/DROPPED for 2027, you have a guaranteed issue into a Medigap/Medicare Supplement. This is huge and very important, know your options!Medicare Seminars they are good for general information. A one-to-one appointment where you can dive into your doctors and medication is best, plus you can then compare other companies in one place. Medicare Part D most insurance carriers have taken away insurance agents ability to help you with your Part D Only drug plans this does not apply to most Advantage plans, standalone drug plans as well as Advantage Plans, you wont have to pay more than $2,400 in out-of-pocket drug costs, which include deductibles, co-pays, coinsurance. It is especially important to check your plans formulary as medication must be in formulary to be capped. 2027 RX deductible will be capped at $715.00. As a reminder the cost of the plan is not as important as the cost plus your medications, that is what you look at, the total cost. It is important to know what the medication is used for to determine if it is covered by the plan. Example Wycovy may be covered but to be covered it must be used for certain heart conditions or diabetes, Medicare does not cover weight lose medications at this time. As a reminder if you choose NOT to ENROLL in a Part D drug plan and in later years you want one you will have to wait for Annual Enrollment and then you will assed a penalty for every month you did not have a drug plan, that penalty will last for the REST OF YOUR LIFE! When you turn 65 you are eligible for Medicare, once you have worked 40 quarters roughly 10 years there is no cost for Medicare Part A. Part A covers Hospitals, Skilled Nursing, Home Health & Hospice. Medicare Part B you can choose to take at 65, or you can hold off if you are still working and have credible coverage. If you do not have group health insurance that is considered qualified, and then you want Medicare you would have a late enrollment penalty for each month you did not have Part B & Part D, and that penalty will last for the rest of your life. Part B covers doctors, imaging, blood work, ambulance, durable medical equipment, etc. Part D is a Medicare Drug Plan and covers medications. During your initial enrollment period it is especially important to understand your options! Medicare Supplements/Medigap Plans are NOT guaranteed issues; you may need to medically qualify. You can purchase a Medigap Plan during your 1st 6 months on Medicare Part B without medical underwriting. There are a lot of things you need to know. Again, work with an agent you can trust! Especially important: when you move you need to know your options. Can you keep the same plan? Do you need to make a change and what does that look like? One of the most important decisions families can make as their loved one's age is when to begin exploring senior living options. Too often, the conversation doesnt happen until a crisis occursa fall, hospitalization, medication concern, caregiver burnout, or sudden change in care needs. At that point, families may feel overwhelmed and pressured to make a major decision quickly. Instead of choosing what truly feels right, they may simply choose what is immediately available.Senior Living Should Be a ChoiceNot a CrisisPlanning ahead gives seniors and their families something incredibly valuable: time.Time to tour communities.Time to ask questions.Time to compare services and costs.Time to meet the team.Time to understand care options. And most importantly, time for the senior to have a voice in the decision. When the decision is made proactively, seniors can participate in choosing where they want to live, what lifestyle appeals to them, and what is important to their daily happiness and independence. Why Families Choose Springwood CourtAt Springwood Court Assisted Living, we believe the transition to senior living should feel like a new beginningnot a response to an emergency. Our goal is to provide a warm, welcoming environment where residents can receive support while continuing to enjoy the things that make life meaningful. With a tenured, experienced team, 24/7 staff presence, engaging activities, chef-prepared meals, housekeeping, outings, and a strong focus on personalized care, Springwood Court strives to create a community where residents feel known, valued, and at home. Our philosophy is simple:The building may be brick and mortar, but the people are what make it a home to thrive! When a Diagnosis Changes What "Independence" Looks LikeA Parkinson's disease or multiple sclerosis diagnosis doesn't just bring new medical appointments it brings a quiet, creeping worry about the things that used to be automatic. Will Dad still be able to button his own shirt? Will Mom's handwriting get so small no one can read it? Will a tremor or a balance problem turn a simple walk to the mailbox into a fall risk? The good news is that therapy real, targeted, evidence-based therapy can make a measurable difference in how someone with Parkinson's or MS moves, functions, and feels, often for years. And increasingly, that therapy doesn't require a drive to a clinic. Sarasota families have access to specialized providers who bring this care directly into the home, meeting people exactly where they are, both literally and in terms of their disease progression. Below, we look closely at two providers offering this kind of specialized therapy in the Sarasota area. What Is Parkinson's & MS Therapy, and Who Is It For?Parkinson's disease and multiple sclerosis are both progressive neurological conditions, but they affect the body differently, and therapy for each is tailored accordingly. What they share is this: both conditions can gradually erode mobility, balance, strength, and the ability to complete everyday tasks and both respond well to consistent, condition-specific rehabilitation. This category typically includes: Physical therapy (PT) focused on mobility, balance, gait, strength, and fall prevention Occupational therapy (OT) focused on the skills needed for daily living, such as dressing, bathing, cooking, and fine motor tasks Speech therapy (SLP) addressing changes in voice volume, clarity, and swallowing that are common in Parkinson's disease Specialized Parkinson's protocols such as LSVT BIG (for movement) and LSVT LOUD (for voice), and the PWR!Moves exercise program, all designed specifically around the unique symptom patterns of Parkinson's disease In-home and mobile therapy models bringing licensed therapists directly to a patient's home, which is especially valuable for people whose mobility challenges make traveling to a clinic difficult or exhausting This kind of therapy is a fit for anyone newly diagnosed with Parkinson's or MS who wants to stay ahead of symptom progression, individuals already experiencing mobility loss, tremor, rigidity, or balance issues, people managing swallowing or speech changes related to Parkinson's, and caregivers looking for professional support that reduces the physical and logistical burden of getting a loved one to outside appointments.Parkinson's & MS Therapy Providers in Sarasota, FLFOX RehabilitationPhone: (877) 222-4766FOX Rehabilitation is a clinician-owned, mission-driven healthcare organization built specifically around rehabilitating older adults, with a presence in 38 states and Washington, D.C. FOX was founded on the concept of Geriatric House Calls, delivering physical, occupational, and speech therapy directly in a patient's home or senior living community rather than requiring travel to an outpatient clinic.Services offered: FOX provides a full continuum of therapy, including physical therapy for mobility, balance, strength, and pain management; occupational therapy focused on daily function and home safety; and speech therapy. Within this, FOX offers dedicated Specialty Programs for conditions such as Parkinson's disease, delivering evidence-based, condition-specific care rather than a generic therapy approach. Therapists also conduct falls-risk assessments and can recommend home modifications and adaptive equipment to help reduce fall risk and support long-term independence. FOX Wellness programs extend beyond skilled therapy for people who want to maintain progress or build healthy habits over the longer term. What families should know: FOX is a Medicare Part B provider, and most services are covered for eligible patients without requiring the patient to be homebound or hospitalized first a meaningful distinction from home health models that carry stricter eligibility requirements. The organization accepts most major insurance plans, including Medicare Advantage, and its team can assist with benefit verification and care coordination, which can take some of the administrative burden off families. FOX also partners with senior living communities throughout the Sarasota area, so residents in independent or assisted living settings can access the same in-home model of care.Best for: Families who want the backing of a large, established national organization with a full range of therapy disciplines under one roof, and who value the flexibility of Medicare Part B coverage without a homebound requirement. Functional Transformation Mobile RehabPhone: (941) 830-3749Functional Transformation Mobile Rehab is a locally owned mobile therapy practice serving Sarasota and Charlotte counties, as well as Manatee and Hillsborough counties, led by Occupational Therapist and Certified Lymphedema Therapist James Ferrara. The practice operates on a "we come to you" model, bringing therapy directly into patients' homes throughout the region.Services offered: Functional Transformation Mobile Rehab specializes in occupational therapy, lymphedema therapy, and Parkinson's-specific treatment through LSVT BIG and PWR!Moves. LSVT BIG is a specialized therapy protocol that trains people with Parkinson's to make bigger, more purposeful movements to counteract the small, shuffling movements the disease often causes over time the practice's therapists are trained and certified specifically to administer this treatment. The team also works on restoring fine motor skills for everyday tasks like buttoning a shirt, tying shoes, or safely getting in and out of the shower, along with mobility, range of motion, and driving-related skills. What families should know: As a smaller, locally run practice, Functional Transformation Mobile Rehab emphasizes that its therapists never over-schedule, allowing for genuinely personalized, unhurried care built around each patient's pace. The practice is also a Medicare Part B-approved provider and does not require patients to be homebound to receive services. For families managing Parkinson's alongside another condition like lymphedema which can be a complicating factor after cancer treatment this practice's dual specialization may be a particularly good fit.Best for: Families who want a smaller, locally owned practice with deep specialization in Parkinson's-specific protocols like LSVT BIG, along with the flexibility to also address related conditions like lymphedema under one provider. Why This Matters Locally in SarasotaSarasota's status as one of Florida's most senior-dense communities means the local population living with Parkinson's disease and MS is significant and growing as the broader community ages. A few things make access to this kind of specialized, in-home therapy especially valuable here: Mobility challenges and Florida distances don't mix well. For someone managing balance issues or fatigue from Parkinson's or MS, even a short drive to an outpatient clinic can be exhausting or unsafe. In-home therapy removes that barrier entirely. Sarasota's active retirement culture raises the stakes for staying mobile. With so much of daily life here built around walking, boating, golfing, and community activities, maintaining functional independence isn't just a medical goal it's central to quality of life for many local seniors. Local access to condition-specific protocols matters. Not every therapy practice is trained in specialized programs like LSVT BIG or LSVT LOUD. Having providers in the Sarasota area who are specifically certified in these evidence-based Parkinson's protocols means families don't have to travel out of the region to access this level of specialized care. Coordination with senior living communities is common here. With many Sarasota seniors living in independent or assisted living communities, having therapy providers who already work within these settings as FOX Rehabilitation does can simplify care coordination significantly. How to Get StartedGetting started with Parkinson's or MS therapy doesn't require a complicated process. Here's how to begin: Talk to the treating physician first. While some Medicare Part B therapy services don't require a formal referral, many patients begin the process through their neurologist or primary care doctor, who can help identify the specific therapy disciplines that would help most. Ask about specialized protocols. If Parkinson's is the primary concern, ask directly whether the practice offers LSVT BIG or LSVT LOUD, and whether the treating therapist is certified in that specific protocol. Confirm insurance and coverage details. Both providers listed above are Medicare Part B providers, but it's worth confirming your specific plan's coverage, especially if you have a Medicare Advantage plan, before your first visit. Ask about the homebound requirement. Unlike traditional home health agencies, both providers above do not require patients to be homebound to receive in-home therapy an important distinction if your loved one is still getting out and about but needs targeted support. Discuss scheduling flexibility. If pacing and avoiding fatigue is a concern, ask how the practice structures appointments and whether they can accommodate a patient's energy levels and daily rhythms. Reassess goals regularly. Both Parkinson's and MS can change over time, so it's worth checking in with your therapy team periodically to make sure the current plan still matches your loved one's needs and goals.
