Wondering how to improve balance and agility, build strength and endurance, and enjoy time with friends? Make exercise a part of your weekly routine. No matter your age or ability, there is a place for you to accomplish your goals. Daily exercise is not only physically rewarding, it is a great way to improve your mood, work your brain, and relieve your anxieties. It can be food for your soul. Balance classes are a great way to focus specifically on improving balance, but most exercise will aid in building better balance.
Why do you need to improve your balance? Better balance means less chance of falling. According to Consumer Reports chief medical adviser, each year, about half of those in the U.S. who are 65-plus suffer a fall; almost 10 percent are seriously injured. In 2011, almost 23,000 U.S. adults older than 64 died from a fall. Some were immediate, but most deaths occurred as a result of complications from the initial injury.
Have you ever tried warm water therapy? Talk about a fantastic way to get in some exercise and build your core strength. Water provides a unique environment in which to exercise safely. Its easy on the joints, relaxing to the muscles, and soothing to the mind, body, and spirit. Adding water weights or a resistance channel to your pool therapy will increase strength and endurance while keeping the intensity low. Starting slowly and adding weights or extra time to your workout is highly recommended for safety and injury prevention. Its a perfect place to exercise if you have arthritis. Look for Aqua Arthritis, or water walking classes at your local pool.
Additionally, look for social events or senior activities at local wellness centers. Several places may have life-long learning for a small cost or may even be free. The social aspect is not only fun but gives encouragement to those around you. If you don't have an exercise buddy, go to your local gym or wellness center to find a class that fits your needs. Remember to listen to your body and make modifications as necessary.

Creative Ways for Seniors to Incorporate Steps into Each Day

There is a high incidence of cardiovascular disease in seniors. In fact, 35% of seniors 65-74 and 59% of seniors 75-84 years old have cardiovascular disease. Taking a few preventative steps can lead to a more active independent lifestyle later in life.A published study in the journal Circulation confirmed that taking more daily steps for seniors was associated with a decreased risk of cardiovascular disease. Additional positive effects of physical activity include the following: More prolonged independence. Higher self-esteem. A better quality of life. Realizing joy in everyday moments. More good news: no additional gym equipment is required, just a comfortable pair of shoes.How can seniors count steps?Today more seniors are adopting technology and smartphones. The Apple Health app on iPhones and the Google Fit app on Android phones are examples of pedometers already integrated into the smartphone.
