At the age of 6, Don received a diagnosis that would change the course of his entire life. A rare lung disease required him to undergo a radical surgery and would cause him to spend the rest of his life in and out of hospitals.
But, despite the fact he was never fully healthy, Don still had big dreams to live fully and fought to experience all he could before ultimately receiving a double-lung transplant at the age of 48.
Living fully has unique meaning for each of us. We all come into this world as a blank slate, but leave it with a range of experiences and stories that attest to who we are, what we care about, and what we believe in. These stories are within us and our individual experiences shape the meaning of our life from how we spent childhood growing up in our families, to having one of our own; from finding purpose through a career, or simply experiencing adventure in the day-to-day along the way. Whether its major life events like Dons experience or the everyday small things that make our heart smile, what do we want to share with those we care about? What lessons have we learned, or advice would we like to give?
Gateway Hospices Life Story Project, led by our volunteers passion, compassion, empathy, and listening spirit, afford hospice patients the opportunity to record their Life Story. Gateway Hospice volunteers are trained and equipped to guide the patient (and their family) through the journey of sharing their experiences and what is most important to them.
Recording their Life Story using a voice recorder, video recorder, and/or putting their stories together in a scrapbook with pictures are the ways in which volunteers can help give a voice to their story. The captured story lives on film, record and in the hearts of their loved ones forever.

Chocolate Avocado Pudding Recipe

Ingredients 2 large avocados chilled 1/2 cup full fat coconut milk 1/3 cup raw cacao powder 1/3 cup maple syrup 2 tsp vanilla extract Optional Toppings hazelnuts roughly chopped sea salt Instructions1. Slice avocados in half and remove the pit.2. Scoop out the flesh into a food processor.3. Add the remaining ingredients.4. Blend until smooth and creamy, scraping down the sides as needed.5. Test and see if youd like to add any additional sweetener.6. Divide the chocolate avocado pudding into four serving bowls.7. Serve with your favorite toppings such as hazelnuts or sea salt. The HASS Avocado Board supports nutrient research suggesting one avocado a day increases lutein levels. Lutein is one of two major carotenoids found in the human eye, the macula & the retina. 4 Ways Seniors Can Prepare for a Successful Retirement

Retirement is something everyone dreams of. However, as you near the age of retirement there are a few things you should do to prepare. Here are some ways to ensure you have the best retirement possible! SET GOALSCreating goals can help you get a better vision of your future during retirement. Try to set at least 3-5 realistic goals. What kind of lifestyle you want and who you want to be around? Do you want to spend more time with family and friends? Get involved in the community? Take some time to travel?  Then get more specific. For instance, if you want to travel, think about where you want to go and how long you want to stay there. Do you want to travel internationally? Go somewhere warm?EVALUATE YOUR FINANCESAn essential part of having a successful retirement is having enough money saved up for when you arent working. At the start of your career, you probably enrolled in your companys 401(k) program or opened a similar account to prepare for retirement. While these will probably have you covered, its smart to evaluate your current financial situation to ensure you have enough money saved.Once you know what your income will be during retirement, create a budget to live off of. If you have debt, make a plan to pay it off before you retire. Remember, itll be much harder to tackle debt payments without your normal income from work; its best to be proactive!FOCUS ON YOUR HEALTHBeing healthy will make retirement much more enjoyable and will allow you the freedom to do whatever you want! Be proactive and schedule preventative checkups with your doctor so you can make a plan to improve your health or get treatment for any serious conditions. You should also continue to stay active and exercise regularly to maintain your muscle and bone strength. Eat a healthy diet, get enough sleep, and focus on your mental health so youre ready for this lifestyle change!CONSIDER YOUR OPTIONSThink about your retirement goals and where you envision yourself later in life. Moving into an independent living community might be the right choice for you!  In these communities, you can meet new people, participate in social events, and have access to luxurious amenities (like room service, fitness centers, gourmet chefs, and more!).  Editors Note:  This article has been submitted South Hills Square Retirement Resort.  Contact them today to discover the benefits of all-inclusive retirement living at 412-253-6100.
