Older Adults in Dallas

Seniors in Dallas/Fort Worth know they are lucky. Not only is this a great place to live, but here they have the ability to grow old without leaving their own homes or losing their independence due to home care agencies that provide caregivers and care managers based on customized care plans.

Nearly 9 in 10 seniors say they'd prefer to keep living at home rather than move to a facility. Yet every year, thousands still enter nursing homes never knowing they had the option to remain in their own homes with assistance from a home caregiver.

I prefer being at home because it lets me be with my husband and my pets, says Mrs. Granger, whose severe stroke in 2016 rendered her unable to be left alone without care. Her caregiver, Annie, stays every day between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., which allows Mrs. Grangers husband to continue working. In these economic times, he couldn't afford to retire, she notes. But during the day, Annie watches over me all the time, to make sure Im safe and dont fall. Another Home Care client is 94-year-old Mrs. Stuart. Now suffering from pulmonary fibrosis, she is tied to an oxygen tank 24 hours a day and needs a wheelchair. All of her friends her age already moved into an assisted living facility, but that was not for her. When I talk to them on the phone, I laugh when they ask me when Im going to move into their place, she says. If I just had one or two rooms Id feel too closed-in. I have a number of collections and I can look at them any time I want. Im just so happy to be around this house, where my hummingbirds and all my memories are. Despite her frailty and illness, Mrs. Stuart can keep her independent lifestyle with help from her live-in caregiver. She helps me shower and does all the cooking, housekeeping and driving. She reminds me to take my medicine. She fixes really good meals! Role reversal is equally stressful for adult children and their elderly parents alike. Home care agencies provide relief and peace of mind to their clients and their families because living at home is the best place to live.
