The National Senior Games Association reminds us that certain factors can put seniors at risk while exercising. Aging can bring poor balance, lack of flexibility, and a generally greater tendency toward injury. Some older adults become more sensitive to heat and humidity or more vulnerable to flu and colds.
The good news is that, done properly, starting an exercise program can improve your balance and flexibility as well as your overall health. Talk to your doctor first to get help assessing your own level of risk. Your medical history and any specific current health concerns determine what types of exercise are best for you. Some may be particularly beneficial, and there may be things you should avoid.
The National Institute on Aging says seniors should spend at least 2.5 hours (150 minutes) per week on moderate-intensity exercise. You don’t have to do it all in one day; in fact, that’s not recommended. Instead, spread activity-based exercise over at least three days, and spend at least two days building strength with weight lifting, sit-ups—whatever is most appropriate and safe for you.

The thought of exercising can be daunting for many of us, but it doesnt have to be.Sticking to a moderate intensity or within whats called zone 2 cardio can help make exercise more manageable and just as effective, when done consistently and often.What is zone 2 cardio?Some examples of zone 2 cardio include walking, running, biking and swimming.All of these exercises get your heart pumping, but its how fast its going that makes all the difference because this is how hard your body is working to get oxygen through your bloodstream.Jefferson Brewer, an Exercise Physiologist at Intermountain Health said, Your heart doesnt care what youre doing. If youre walking around the neighborhood, pushing the cart around the grocery store, or running up a mountain."When youre doing something at a lower intensity, it will be easiest to do that on an indoor bike or a treadmill with a slight incline, depending on your fitness level. It can be quite hard to run in zone 2 though.Theres a common misconception in the world of fitness training in that you have to be going all gas, no breaks, pedal to the metal at all times, as hard as possible all the time, said Brewer.Zone 2 workouts are going to be more sustained over a longer period, but at a lower intensity, which is different from something like High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) where youre revving the engine up, going to 8 out of 10 or 9 out of 10, and then cooling off for a matter of seconds.The American College of Sports Medicine recommends healthy adults aged 18-65 do moderate intensity or zone 2 cardio for 30 minutes, five days a week, or a total of 150 minutes per week.How do I know Im doing zone 2 cardio right?Most fitness trackers, like Apple Watches and Fitbits, will track your cardio zones.Theyre set to averages, but you can manually adjust your zones in the workout settings.For guidance, these are the average cardiac zones used on Apple Watches:Zone 1: Less than 136 BPMZone 2: 137-148 BPMZone 3: 149-161 BPMZone 4: 162-174 BPMZone 5: 175+ BPMTo know your true cardiac zones, it requires quite a bit of math and some knowledge of your resting heart rate and your maximum heart rate.When you're looking at zone 2 cardio, it's not quite so challenging that you couldn't talk to someone or carry a conversation. Some other benefits that come with exercise are better sleep, more energy, higher self-esteem, and sharper memory. The best part is, that these efforts that we can make to have better self-care do not have to be overthought. Incorporating exercise into your self-care routine can be as simple as starting small. There is no need to have a big goal of being able to lift crazy weights or go for mile-long runs. Begin with fitting in a couple of 15-minute walk breaks into your workday. This is not only a great way to start getting some physical movement in, but it also can increase productivity when you return to your tasks. Finding activities you enjoy and setting realistic goals are key to making exercise a sustainable part of your routine. Remember, self-care is about prioritizing your well-being, and it's important to do what works best for you. A great way to start practicing more self-care habits is to first look at your current habits. Are there some that could be removed? One that could be modified to be either a little harder or easier? Once you do that, you can easily reflect on what self-care needs you personally have, and then can find a way to fit them into your day-to-day life. I like to write these practices down in my planner so that I have reminders to create time for them, as I know its important for me to do. But the other part of this is something that I stay true to even more than just planning to exercise. And that is to not beat myself up on the days that I just couldnt find the time. I know that there will always be tomorrow, and I can push myself a little bit harder for the lost time.Modify! If I had planned that I was going to get to the gym after a long day of work, and I come home just far too tired to get there I often opt for a walk outside instead of an intense gym session, just so that I am at least moving my body. Half the time, once I do this I come back in the mood to pump out some extra movements like squats or lifting dumbbells.I love to reward myself. Getting into the habit of exercise is hard, but so worth it. I often like to reward myself on those days that I really was not in the mood, but did it anyway. One thing to note, is that I try not to make a habit of this. It can be expensive and not always the healthiest. (Grabbing a latte every day after the gym will add up!)
