Have you ever been to a silent disco where people are dancing to music that only they can hear through their headphones? It's quite funny to watch them dance to invisible music! This got me thinking about how certain things are better when combined, like music and dancing. Similarly, in the world of wellness, combining certain modalities can enhance their effectiveness. Stacking modalities or therapies is a trend that is gaining popularity and can help people save time, tailor their approach to their specific needs, and achieve better overall health and wellness.
I started using therapy stacking in the HaloIR sauna without even knowing that it had a name to alleviate a severe sinus blockage. I started with daily halotherapy (dry salt inhalation) sessions, and to increase the absorption of salt in my airways I also used low infrared sauna heat at the same time. Later, I added high-heat infrared sauna sessions a couple of times a week to detox and increase sweating. Combining and layering these touchless modalities helped me breathe easier, helped calm my anxiety, and expedited my recovery.
The decision to use a HaloIR sauna was a game-changer in addressing my physical, mental, and even spiritual needs all at once. Whenever I use the sauna, I immerse myself in the experience, combining the therapeutic effects of halotherapy and low infrared heat with the soothing scents of essential oils and the calming chromotherapy lights. I also often listen to Bible studies (here’s my current favorite), which helps me create a multi-layered approach to wellness. This approach not only benefits my body but also calms my mind.
I think it’s more common than not, that people prioritize their physical bodies and overlook their spiritual health. In Justin Roethlingshoefer’s book, “The Power of Ownership,” he emphasizes that the body does not know the difference between mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional stress. Everything is interconnected. We were created in God’s image with a mind, body, and spirit so why wouldn’t we try to address all areas of wellness?
Let’s first look at Touchless Wellness which involves various treatments, experiences, or therapies that promote physical, mental, and emotional health without requiring physical human touch, many of which are used in therapy stacking. Sticking with our music theme, it’s like a player piano where the piano plays itself, no pianist needed. Some examples are cryotherapy, halotherapy (dry salt), infrared sauna, compression therapy, red light therapy, sound therapy, and aromatherapy to name a few. Most only require the press of a button to start the equipment. Learn more about touchless wellness here. Using touchless modalities offers an enhanced experience, convenience, and customization.
Today, I would like to bring your attention to the range of health and wellness modalities that are available at the Ageless Fitness and Vitality Booth Wellness Center that can help with care of your mind, body, and spirit. By combining them in the most effective and enjoyable ways, you can achieve optimal results and even integrate them with your fitness plan to create a symphony of health and vitality.
There are quite a few different ways you can therapy stack and here are some examples:
Just as I stacked in the HaloIR sauna with low infrared heat and halotherapy at the same time, another way to make the most of your time stacking multiple modalities in one session would be inside patented Vitality Booths. This innovative technology offers a combination of four therapeutic modalities including red light therapy, halotherapy (salt therapy), negative ion therapy, and compressed oxygen therapy.
In particular, two of the modalities pair very well together when used at the same time: red light therapy and halotherapy. Red light therapy involves exposure to red or near-infrared light, which penetrates the skin and stimulates cellular energy production. This promotes skin health, reduces inflammation, and aids in muscle recovery. Halotherapy, on the other hand, involves inhaling microscopic salt particles, which can improve respiratory and skin health, alleviate allergies and asthma symptoms, and induce relaxation. Individually, these modalities offer numerous benefits, but when combined, their effects are amplified.
The ensemble of red light therapy and halotherapy is remarkable. The warmth from the red light enhances the absorbency of the pharmaceutical salt in the air, making it more effective at removing pathogens from your airways. The salt in and around your body releases absorbed red light energy into areas that red light alone wouldn't reach, such as your throat and ear canals. The millions of salt particles in the air also reflect red light energy, providing microbursts of red light to more areas of your body. This synergistic interaction maximizes the benefits of both modalities. Each modality provides unique benefits, but when used together, they create powerful harmonious effects, and all are done with the convenience of one session.
Now imagine listening to your favorite song while getting some cardio at the same time. Inside a Vitality Booth, you can stack therapies while engaging in other activities. For example, you can exercise on a cardio machine, burning more calories and allowing the salt to reach further into your respiratory tract with deeper breathing. Or you can relax on a hydromassage bed while listening to a Bible study or audiobook, nourishing your mind and body simultaneously. This multi-tasking approach increases the benefits and makes the most of your Vitality Booth session.
Imagine attending a concert festival with various bands and going from stage to stage to see your favorites. Many modalities work great when used one right after the other. Therapy stacking isn't limited to just Vitality Booths; it's a versatile approach that can be tailored to your unique goals. Imagine combining different habits and therapies back-to-back to maximize your wellness journey. Here’s an example of combining wellness modalities with a fitness plan:
Start with three minutes of cryotherapy before your workout to reduce muscle soreness and inflammation, setting the stage for a comfortable and effective exercise session. (By the way, listening to music during cryo helps take your mind off the time and cold, so make sure you have a song in mind before your session!)
After your workout, indulge in 15 minutes of the Halo-IR sauna to soothe sore muscles and promote relaxation, enhancing your post-workout recovery.
Complete your therapy stack with 20 minutes of compression therapy, which improves circulation and aids in the removal of metabolic waste from your muscles, optimizing your recovery process.
This is just one illustration of maximizing your workout results and saving time by incorporating wellness and recovery modalities customized to your individual needs by stacking therapies around your workout.
Another way to stack touchless modalities back-to-back is layering hot and cold therapies. For instance, doing a 30-minute infrared sauna session, drying off, followed by three minutes of whole body cryotherapy is an example of two recovery modalities that can complement each other. Cryotherapy involves exposing your body to frigid temperatures which helps lower inflammation, boost circulation, and promote muscle recovery. The infrared sauna uses far infrared to heat the body from within, help detoxify, promote relaxation, and increase cardiovascular health. By stacking the two therapies in one day you can potentially achieve better results.
And finally, the third way of therapy stacking includes following a set protocol for a set period. This is like going to regular piano lessons leading up to a recital. This could be in response to a particular ailment such as seasonal allergies where you might do three sessions of halotherapy per week for one month or until your symptoms stop. And as we’ve already learned, you can make the halotherapy more impactful by stacking with red light in a Vitality Booth, or with low infrared heat in the HaloIR sauna.
There are many benefits to therapy stacking and even more when done at one location. Let’s look at a few:
Enhanced Results: Combining different therapies can lead to better and faster outcomes. For example, using red light therapy and halotherapy together can improve breathing. The combined effects of various treatments can boost benefits and result in improved results.
Targeted Approach: Stacking therapies lets you focus on specific areas or health goals. You can customize your treatment plan to address multiple aspects of your well-being at once, offering a more complete and holistic wellness approach. For instance, trying whole body cryotherapy before a workout can help reduce pain and enhance performance.
Cost-Effective: Stacking therapies can be a budget-friendly way to access a range of treatments. By combining multiple modalities in one session, you can make the most of your wellness investment. Membership options and package deals are available, with discounts for combining fitness and wellness services.
Time Efficiency: Stacking therapies saves time by allowing you to receive multiple treatments in a single session. This is great for busy individuals looking to optimize their wellness routine. Many clients enjoy a quick Vitality Booth session followed by cryotherapy, getting multiple benefits in just 30 minutes. Having recovery options available right after a workout is also a convenient way to make the most of your time.
Long-Term Benefits: Consistent therapy stacking can lead to lasting health benefits. Clients often discover improvements in unexpected areas, such as joint pain relief from regular cryotherapy sessions. By incorporating a variety of modalities into your routine, you can support ongoing wellness and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Mind-Body Connection: Many stacked therapies promote a strong mind-body connection, enhancing mental clarity, emotional well-being, and overall balance. Clients often seek stress relief through these modalities. By addressing both physical and mental aspects of health, you can achieve a more integrated and holistic approach to wellness.
Are you ready to elevate your wellness journey with therapy stacking? Just as dancing to a great song makes it easier and much more enjoyable, combining different wellness modalities can enhance your overall health and wellness experience. Moving a parent to senior living is rarely just a move. It is an emotional transitionfor the older adult, the family, and often the person making the decision.Families may feel guilt, sadness, fear, relief, and even uncertaintysometimes all in the same day.A daughter may think, Am I doing the right thing?A son may wonder, Will Mom think Im abandoning her?And a parent may be thinking, Am I losing my independence? These emotions are normal. As senior living leaders, our responsibility goes beyond providing a safe apartment, meals, activities, and care. We have to care for the emotional journey that comes with the transition. Its not about taking independence away. Its about helping redefine what independence looks like.Sometimes independence means no longer worrying about cooking, cleaning, medication management, or being alone. It means having people nearby, opportunities to socialize, and support when it is neededwhile still having choices about how each day is lived.Families need reassurance, not judgment. The decision to move a parent is often made after monthsor yearsof difficult conversations, falls, sleepless nights, increasing care needs, or simply realizing that living alone isnt working anymore.Families dont need someone to make them feel guilty. They need someone to say:Youre not failing your parent. Youre helping create a safer, more supported chapter of their life. The first days matter.A successful transition isnt just about getting someone moved in.The process starts before they move in. Person Centered Selling truly makes a difference from an average senior living to a fantastic senior living. It is about learning who they are. What makes them smile? What did they do for a living? What music do they enjoy? What foods do they love?Who are the important people in their life? What makes them feel comfortable? When we know the person behind the resident, we can begin creating a sense of belonging, not just care. And sometimes the greatest measure of success isnt the beautiful apartment or the activity calendar. Its when a family member says:I havent seen Mom this happy in a long time. That is priceless! That is when we know the transition is becoming a new beginning. From a senior living leaders perspectiveI have learned that families arent simply looking for a place for Mom or Dad.They are looking for peace of mind. They want to know their loved one is safe. They want to know someone will notice when something isnt right. They want their parent to have friends. They want to be a daughter or son againnot a full-time caregiver. And most importantly, they want to know:Will you love and care for my parent when I cant be there? That is the promise behind great senior living like Springwood Court. Because at the end of the day, we arent just helping someone move into a community. Were helping a family move into a new chapter and season of their life, one filled with support, connection, dignity and love.Fran Gray RNExecutive Director Springwood CourtAssisted Living12780 Kenwood LaneFort Myers, FL33907239-278-0078
Naples, Fla. Behind Naples' image as one of Florida's most affluent communities lies a growing and often invisible crisis: a rising number of seniors who can no longer afford both groceries and essential bills. As Collier County's population continues to age rapidly, local hunger-relief organizations are reporting that older adults are becoming one of the fastest-growing groups in need of food assistance.A County Growing Older, FasterCollier County is already one of the oldest counties in Florida, with 36 percent of residents age 65 or older a figure expected to climb to 46 percent by 2050. While the county's overall poverty rate sits at roughly 10.7 percent, a closer look reveals a more troubling picture for older adults: nearly a third of Collier County seniors live below the ALICE Survival Budget threshold, the income level required to cover basic necessities such as housing, food, transportation, and health care. For a single older adult, that threshold is $26,680 a year; for a couple, $45,564 figures that fall far short of what many face in a high-cost coastal market like Naples. Many of these seniors live on fixed incomes from Social Security or modest pensions that have not kept pace with rising housing and condo fee costs, property insurance premiums, and medical expenses. Meals of Hope Seeing the Shift and The Glenview at Pelican Bay is Ready to HelpUnlike younger families facing food insecurity, senior hunger often goes unseen. Many older adults are reluctant to ask for help due to pride, limited mobility, or simply not knowing where to turn. Meals of Hope, the Naples-based hunger relief nonprofit founded by President and CEO Stephen Popper in 2007, is one of the organizations seeing this shift firsthand and The Glenview at Pelican Bay has a personal connection. Stephens mother, Christine Popper, who is a current resident at The Glenview at Pelican Bay and a former nurse, came up with the idea 19 years ago. My mother saw a need to support a school in Haiti but found that the children couldnt learn because they did not have enough to eat, remarked Steve, I did some research, learned about meal packing opportunities, and hosted an event in Naples in August 2007 where 500 volunteers showed up to pack 135,000 meals. That event was life-changing, and Meals of Hope was born. The Glenview at Pelican Bay is a willing and regular packing partner and the next Meals of Hope event will take place on Monday, August 24 at 1pm. The press is invited to watch the process. Now the largest food pantry network in Southwest Florida, Meals of Hope operates roughly 21 weekly food pantries across Collier and Lee counties and distributes more than 125 million meals each month, serving approximately 4,000 families a week. Popper notes that older adults on fixed incomes are showing up in growing numbers, often for the first time in their lives, as inflation and rising local housing costs erode the purchasing power of Social Security checks. How The Glenview at Pelican Bay Is RespondingBesides housing the idea person behind this effective community service, The Glenview at Pelican Bay partners with Meals of Hope regularly with residents who volunteers hundreds of hours of time to organize, sort and pack meal boxes. They will be doing it again this month on Monday August 24 at 1pm. We feel it is important to support our community in every way, adds Daniel Gomez, Glenviews Executive Director, We are so proud to have Mrs. Popper among our residents and it has become something our residents and staff look forward to helping with.It will be a family affair for the Poppers as Christine, her son Steve, his wife, their children and her grandchildren will be among the volunteers. Notes the Matriarch Christine Popper, It is a wonderful way to teach our children about community service and I get a nice visit out of it as well. I am so grateful for The Glenview at Pelican Bay and how they readily embrace helping the community. In addition to regular packing events, Meals of Hope has expanded its infrastructure and reimagined how it reaches vulnerable seniors and families, including:A new 18,000-square-foot distribution center in Naples, featuring more than 9,000 square feet of refrigerated space to store fresh produce, proteins, and dairy at a much larger scaleYour Neighborhood Pantry, a mobile "choice" pantry launched with support from the Collier Community Foundation, where residents walk through and select their own groceries including fresh produce, dairy, eggs, and proteins preserving dignity and reducing wasteNeighborhood-based mobile pantries, including a location at the River Park Community Center currently serving close to 100 families per week, with room to grow to 160A Home Delivery Initiative aimed at reaching homebound residents in Immokalee and Golden Gate who face transportation or mobility barriers that a traditional pantry can't solveThe Hunger to Hope capital campaign, which has raised $2.8 million toward a $4.5 million goal to fund long-term infrastructure behind this workStarting and watching Meals of Hope grow and help so many people has been life changing for me and my family, Steve added. And, it just goes to show, listen to your mother because she knows what is right.
