Cold and flu season poses challenges, especially in senior
care settings where the risk of infection is higher. Seniors are particularly
vulnerable to these illnesses and can experience more severe symptoms and
complications compared to younger adults. Caregivers play a key role in promoting
cold and flu prevention in seniors, as Senior Helpers will
outline. By understanding and implementing prevention strategies, caregivers
can help enhance the health and well-being of seniors during these challenging
months.
The Importance of Vaccination
Cold and flu prevention in seniors involves getting
all necessary vaccinations. Flu and pneumonia vaccines can
significantly reduce the risk of severe illness and hospitalization. By
ensuring seniors receive their annual flu shot and other recommended
vaccinations, caregivers can provide substantial protection against these
viruses.
Vaccines help the body's immune system respond to the virus
if exposed, leading to milder symptoms and quicker recovery. Caregivers should
regularly check with healthcare providers to confirm that seniors have received
all recommended vaccinations.
Hygiene Tips for Caregivers and Seniors
Maintaining proper hygiene is also an important part of cold
and flu prevention in seniors, helping limit the spread of viruses. Here are some key tips:
A strong immune system can also help seniors ward off
infections more effectively. Caregivers can support seniors' immune health
through several important approaches. Ensuring seniors eat a
balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals is fundamental to
immune function. This means incorporating plenty of fruits, vegetables, and
lean proteins into daily meals to provide the nutrients the body needs to fight
off infections.
Other Ways to Prevent Illness
Regular physical activity supports cold and flu prevention
in seniors by maintaining strong immune health. Caregivers should
encourage low-impact exercises such as walking or stretching to
keep seniors active and healthy without overtaxing their bodies. Remember to
consult a doctor before starting a new fitness routine. Adequate restful sleep
is also equally important, as it allows the body to repair itself and
strengthen its natural defenses against illness.
Finally, managing stress can significantly impact immune function.
Caregivers should encourage seniors to engage in activities that promote
relaxation and mental well-being, such as reading, meditating, or pursuing
enjoyable hobbies.
The Critical Nature of Infection Prevention
Preventing infections in seniors is critical since they can
lead to severe complications. Seniors' immune systems are often weaker, making
them more susceptible to prolonged illness. Complications such as pneumonia can
have long-lasting effects on their health and quality of life.
It is the caregivers' responsibility to maintain a safe and
healthy environment for seniors. This involves not only practicing good hygiene
and supporting vaccinations but also being vigilant about seniors' overall
health and promptly addressing any signs of illness.
Senior Helpers Offers Comprehensive Care and Support
Services for Seniors
Cold and flu prevention in senior care settings is essential to protect seniors’ health and well-being. By prioritizing vaccinations, practicing proper hygiene, and supporting a healthy lifestyle that boosts the immune system, caregivers can make a significant difference.
When Healthcare Costs Rise, Dont Put Your Health on HoldBy Jamie Ulmer, President & CEO, Healthcare NetworkWhen the cost of everyday life goes up, most of us look for places to cut back. We may eat out less often, postpone a purchase or reconsider a trip.Healthcare shouldnt be one of those things.Yet rising insurance costs, deductibles, prescription expenses and other household costs can make even routine healthcare feel difficult to afford. For older adults living on a fixed income, an unexpected medical expense can be particularly concerning. It can be tempting to put off an appointment when youre feeling relatively well. Maybe that lingering cough can wait. Perhaps the pain in your knee isnt quite bad enough to call the doctor. Or that annual checkup can be pushed back a few months. The problem is that delaying care can allow a manageable health concern to become a more serious one. Establishing a relationship with a primary care provider and receiving regular preventive care can help identify health concerns earlier and provide ongoing support for conditions that require monitoring.Community Health Centers Are an Option for Seniors, TooOne healthcare resource older adults may overlook is their local community health center. There is a common misconception that community health centers are free clinics or that they serve only people without insurance. In fact, community health centers provide care to people with a variety of insurance coverage. Healthcare Network accepts Medicare, Medicaid, commercial insurance and Affordable Care Act Marketplace plans. For those who qualify, care is also available on a sliding fee discount scale based on household income. For older adults, having access to primary care is particularly important. Regular visits give you and your provider an opportunity to monitor changes in your health, discuss medications, keep up with preventive care and address concerns before they become more serious.Community health centers can also make it easier to address multiple healthcare needs within one organization. At Healthcare Network, patients have access to primary care, dental care, behavioral health and other services.Getting to Care MattersCost isnt the only reason people delay healthcare. Sometimes the challenge is simply getting there.Transportation, distance and convenience can all become barriers, particularly for older adults who no longer drive, have mobility challenges or depend on family members or caregivers for transportation.Thats why access isnt only about having healthcare services available. Its also about making those services easier to use.Healthcare Network offers telehealth appointments for certain services, giving patients the option to connect with a provider from home when appropriate. For older adults, telehealth can help reduce some of the transportation and scheduling challenges that might otherwise lead them to postpone care.Access to medications is another important part of staying healthy. Healthcare Networks pharmacies offer prescription mail delivery, allowing patients to have eligible medications sent directly to their homes. This can be especially helpful for older adults managing ongoing prescriptions or those who find frequent trips to the pharmacy difficult.Of course, there are times when an in-person visit is necessary. Having healthcare closer to home can make those appointments easier, too. Here in Collier County, Healthcare Network recently opened the Van Domelen Community Health Center in Orangetree. The center brings primary care, dental care, behavioral health, pharmacy services and more to an area where rapid population growth had previously left many residents traveling significant distances for basic healthcare.Options such as care closer to home, telehealth and prescription mail delivery can remove some of the everyday obstacles that make it harder to stay on top of your health.Think of Primary Care as an Investment in IndependenceFor many of us, one of the greatest priorities as we get older is maintaining our independence.Healthcare plays an important role in that.Routine care isnt only about treating an illness after it occurs. Its an opportunity to monitor your health over time, manage ongoing health conditions, keep up with recommended preventive care and talk with your provider about changes you may be experiencing.Having a healthcare provider you know and trust can become especially valuable as you age.If cost, transportation or uncertainty about where to go has caused you to postpone care, ask what resources are available in your community. Having Medicare or Medicaid doesnt prevent you from receiving care at a community health center, and depending on your circumstances, other assistance may be available as well.Last year, Healthcare Network cared for more than 55,000 patients, including nearly half of Collier Countys children, and provided more than $19 million in uncompensated care. Behind those numbers are people at every stage of life who needed a place to turn for healthcare.Growing older brings plenty of changes. Accessing healthcare shouldnt have to become one more challenge.Taking care of your health today can help protect something that becomes increasingly valuable with every passing year: your ability to continue living life on your own terms.About the AuthorJamie Ulmer is President and CEO of Healthcare Network, a nonprofit healthcare organization that has served Collier County for nearly 50 years. He is passionate about improving access to care and strengthening community health so all residents have the opportunity to live healthy, productive lives.
Moving a loved one with dementia into a memory care community can be an emotional and challenging experience for both the individual and their family. Adjusting to a new environment, routine, and group of caregivers takes time, but there are ways families can help make the transition feel more comfortable and familiar. From having important conversations before the move to staying involved afterward, small steps can make a meaningful difference.Supporting Your Loved One Through the Transition to Memory CareHave a Conversation Before the MoveBefore a transition to memory care, it may be beneficial to have a conversation about the move with your loved one. Start by sitting down with them one-on-one in a calm and quiet space when you feel the time is right. Explain what they can expect from their move and new day-to-day in a simple, reassuring way and give them the opportunity to express any thoughts or concerns. Also try to involve them in decisions where possible.Make Their New Space Feel Like HomeYou dont want to move your loved one into a space that feels unfamiliar and cold. Not every piece of furniture or decor has to be brand new either. They want to feel comfortable and at home, and there are plenty of ways to do that for them. During the move, bring familiar furniture with them, their beloved photographs, knick-knacks, artwork, and other meaningful items.Another way to make their space feel like home is to incorporate familiar scents or items that remind them of home. Familiarity can be especially comforting for individuals with dementia, as recognizable belongings, surroundings, and even scents can give them a sense of security in an unfamiliar environment. You can also maintain that sense of familiarity by implementing their everyday routines into new daily life. Whether its enjoying morning coffee, listening to their favorite music, or enjoying daily walks, these familiar routines can help make the new environment feel a little more like home. Routines help to promote independence and reduce stress for individuals with dementia.Stay InvolvedStaying involved after a move provides a variety of emotional and situational benefits for both you and your loved one. For your loved one, seeing a familiar face regularly will help reduce feelings of anxiety and unease. Additionally, regular visits will help them feel valued, comforted, and connected to the people they know and love. For you, visiting your loved one and their community will allow you to build a relationship with staff. This can allow you to get to know the people who take care of your loved one day to day as well as share your own insight into your loved ones unique personality, habits, preferences, and history. You also will be able to get regular updates on how your loved one is doing and adjusting and receive updates on changes to their care plan.Your visits dont have to be lengthy, but ensure that youre getting the most out of them. You can participate in activities or community events or just drop in whenever youd like. Bring photos, your loved ones favorite snacks, or something you can do together like a game or craft.Give Them Time to AdjustA new environment, daily routine, and unfamiliar faces can feel overwhelming for someone with dementia. It may take time for them to become comfortable with their new surroundings and to recognize the people around them. If you experience a particularly difficult transition initially, its important to keep in mind that it doesnt mean you made the wrong decision. There may be good days and difficult days as your loved one adjusts, and thats okay.Let the Care Team HelpYou dont have to navigate a transition alone. From Executive Directors and nursing staff to the culinary and activities teams, your loved ones care team is there to support you both throughout the transition. The team will learn your loved ones preferences, routines, unique personality, and needs in order to make their experience lively and comfortable. Additionally, you should share any information with the care team that you think is relevant, whether its what comforts your loved one, what they enjoy, or what might cause frustration or discomfort with them. You can also check in with the staff whenever you feel the need.At Northland Heights, our team takes the time to get to know each resident as an individual and wants each resident to feel comfortable, valued, and at home every day.Give Yourself GraceLastly, as a caregiver and family member, its vital to give yourself some grace in the process. Its normal to experience guilt, sadness, or uncertainty during a transition to memory care. It can be difficult to let someone else take on some of the responsibilities of taking care of your loved one, and because of that your role may look different now. Choosing memory care for your loved one doesnt mean that youve stopped caring. Youre still a huge source of comfort, familiarity, and connection for them.If youre struggling with feelings of guilt as a caregiver, remember youre not alone. Learn more about caregiver guilt and overcoming these feelings in our recent blog post.Adjustment Takes TimeTransitioning to memory care is a big change, and its completely normal for both you and your loved one to take time to adjust. Its crucial to remember that you dont have to navigate any of it alone. By creating a familiar environment, staying involved, maintaining routines, and keeping in the loop with your loved ones care team, you can make the process feel more comfortable and reassuring. There may be challenges, but with time, patience, and support, your loved one can begin to feel comfortable, connected, and at home in their new community.
Passions Grow, Passions Bloom: Cultivating Wellness at Willow Valley Communities Among the most popular passions at Willow Valley Communities is gardening. And, Residents here have a wide variety of ways to indulge. Three generous gardens are situated across our sprawling 210-acre campus for Residents to use in a multitude of configurations of their choosing. Willow Valley Communities hardworking Grounds Team tills each garden in the spring and plows them in the fall, making them ready for Residents to dig right in. Whether Residents are experienced pros or novices, gardening is a wonderful way for them to get outside, enjoy nature and each other, and learn new things. Some Residents have been gardening for decades, while others have only started gardening after moving to Willow Valley Communities. In keeping with our Life Lived Forward philosophy, some Willow Valley Communities Residents take their love of gardening to deeper levels. For example, several Residents from across the country have achieved the distinction of Master Gardener. Master Gardeners are certified in their home state, and the program can take six months to a year to complete and includes a minimum of 40 hours of classroom training, a score of 80 percent on the final exam, and 50 hours of volunteer service. In another example, Residents Annabelle Simpson and Susan Kelly worked with the Penn State Extension of the Pennsylvania State University to have one of their gardens certified as an official Pennsylvania Pollinator-Friendly Garden. The stunning garden is well-known for attracting huge numbers of bees, butterflies, insects, and birds, helping our ecosystem to thrive. Residents are also able to partner their gardening skills with their desire to volunteer and give back to the Lancaster community. With the areas rich, fertile soil, and the extra special care and attention the plants receive, Residents often have an abundance of vegetables and donate them regularly. Throughout the growing season, the Solanco Neighborhood Ministries food bank receives a variety of beans, lettuce, kale, peas, carrots, eggplant, cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes, spinach, and much more from Willow Valley Communities Resident gardens. Additionally, every fall, a harvest of hundreds of pounds of sweet potatoes and butternut squash goes to the Lancaster County Food Hub, a community resource for free, nutritious food and gently used clothing. Some Residents maintain gardening plots every year just for this purpose.Annabelle Simpson and Susan Kelly Gardening time is couple time for Residents Mike and Susan Ziegler. Sue is an avid gardener, and Mike loves being outdoors supporting her gardening passion at Willow Valley Communities. They both love being together in nature, and Sue is amazed by how magical gardening can be. Its just a miracle when the seeds come up, she says. Resident Pat Mortensen challenges herself every year by growing something completely different. Once she enjoyed a robust harvest of King Tut Purple Peas, a very rare garden pea said to have been taken out of the tomb of King Tut! Resident and Master Gardener Angela Booker-White is originally from Virginia but has lived all over the country. Her interest in gardening grew as she read and learned more about it. In her plot at Spring Run, Angela grows all sorts of fruits, vegetables, and flowers and always tries something new. She has the most success with seeds she purchases from the dollar store! Angela has also learned how gardening can help during challenging times. She is grateful to her garden, as well as to her fellow Willow Valley Communities gardeners, for helping her during the difficult time of her husbands unexpected passing. Gardeners, and she doesnt know exactly who, would come and help by doing extra work around her plot. Residents just came in and helped, Angela says. Weeding, cutting, trimming, harvesting whatever work needed to be done. Thats the way Residents are here at Willow Valley Communities: very supportive. Resident Keith Yoder, who coordinates the Spring Run Garden, is not at all surprised by the variety of gardeners at Willow Valley Communities or by the reasons they enjoy the activity so much. He agrees that gardening is definitely a hobby that enhances well-being. Though hes known this himself for years, he refers to an article put out by CNBC that states how gardening can add years to your life. And life to your years, Keith adds. Gardening gets you into nature. Its good exercise for your body and your mind plus, you get to eat what you grow!
