Embracing the Confusion: A Guide to Navigating the Holidays with Cognitively Impaired Loved Ones

Sarah watched as her mother meticulously set the Thanksgiving table – for the third time that morning. The silverware was perfectly aligned, but something was different. This year, Mom had placed settings for her own parents, who had passed away decades ago. Instead of correcting her, Sarah pulled up a chair and asked, “Tell me about Grandma’s favorite Thanksgiving dish?”

Her mother’s face lit up, and for the next hour, they shared stories about the past holidays. This moment of connection might never have happened if Sarah had simply pointed out her mother’s mistake. When cognitive decline enters our holiday celebrations, it often arrives uninvited and unwelcome. Yet, within this challenge lies an opportunity to create meaningful connections in unexpected ways. As an Aging Life Care Manager™, I’ve witnessed countless families transform potentially stressful situations into touching moments of joy and understanding. Standard holiday tips often suggest simplifying celebrations or maintaining strict routines. While well-intentioned, these one-size-fits-all approaches miss something crucial: each family’s journey with cognitive decline is unique.  This is where the expertise of an Aging Life Care Manager becomes invaluable.

  • Family Mediation
    • We help align family members’ expectations and create unified approaches to care.

Practical Strategies That Work

  1. Create Memory Stations
    1. Set up areas around your home with old photos and familiar objects. These become natural conversation starters and safe spaces for your loved one to engage.
  2. The Power of Parallel Activities
    1. Instead of correcting your loved one’s attempts to “help,” create safe, parallel tasks. If they want to set the table repeatedly, have them fold napkins instead.
  3. Sensory Anchors
    1. Use familiar holiday scents and sounds to create a comforting environment. That apple pie recipe from Mom’s cookbook might trigger more than just hunger.

When the Unexpected Happens

Janet, one of our clients, shared this story: “Dad became agitated during our Thanksgiving dinner, insisting he needed to ‘go to work.’ Our Care Manager had prepared us for this possibility. Instead of arguing, we gave him his old briefcase to organize. He calmed down immediately and joined in the family conversations.”

Passions Grow, Passions Bloom: Cultivating Wellness at Willow Valley Communities Among the most popular passions at Willow Valley Communities is gardening. And, Residents here have a wide variety of ways to indulge. Three generous gardens are situated across our sprawling 210-acre campus for Residents to use in a multitude of configurations of their choosing. Willow Valley Communities hardworking Grounds Team tills each garden in the spring and plows them in the fall, making them ready for Residents to dig right in. Whether Residents are experienced pros or novices, gardening is a wonderful way for them to get outside, enjoy nature and each other, and learn new things. Some Residents have been gardening for decades, while others have only started gardening after moving to Willow Valley Communities. In keeping with our Life Lived Forward philosophy, some Willow Valley Communities Residents take their love of gardening to deeper levels. For example, several Residents from across the country have achieved the distinction of Master Gardener. Master Gardeners are certified in their home state, and the program can take six months to a year to complete and includes a minimum of 40 hours of classroom training, a score of 80 percent on the final exam, and 50 hours of volunteer service. In another example, Residents Annabelle Simpson and Susan Kelly worked with the Penn State Extension of the Pennsylvania State University to have one of their gardens certified as an official Pennsylvania Pollinator-Friendly Garden. The stunning garden is well-known for attracting huge numbers of bees, butterflies, insects, and birds, helping our ecosystem to thrive. Residents are also able to partner their gardening skills with their desire to volunteer and give back to the Lancaster community. With the areas rich, fertile soil, and the extra special care and attention the plants receive, Residents often have an abundance of vegetables and donate them regularly. Throughout the growing season, the Solanco Neighborhood Ministries food bank receives a variety of beans, lettuce, kale, peas, carrots, eggplant, cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes, spinach, and much more from Willow Valley Communities Resident gardens. Additionally, every fall, a harvest of hundreds of pounds of sweet potatoes and butternut squash goes to the Lancaster County Food Hub, a community resource for free, nutritious food and gently used clothing. Some Residents maintain gardening plots every year just for this purpose.Annabelle Simpson and Susan Kelly Gardening time is couple time for Residents Mike and Susan Ziegler. Sue is an avid gardener, and Mike loves being outdoors supporting her gardening passion at Willow Valley Communities. They both love being together in nature, and Sue is amazed by how magical gardening can be. Its just a miracle when the seeds come up, she says. Resident Pat Mortensen challenges herself every year by growing something completely different. Once she enjoyed a robust harvest of King Tut Purple Peas, a very rare garden pea said to have been taken out of the tomb of King Tut! Resident and Master Gardener Angela Booker-White is originally from Virginia but has lived all over the country. Her interest in gardening grew as she read and learned more about it. In her plot at Spring Run, Angela grows all sorts of fruits, vegetables, and flowers and always tries something new. She has the most success with seeds she purchases from the dollar store! Angela has also learned how gardening can help during challenging times. She is grateful to her garden, as well as to her fellow Willow Valley Communities gardeners, for helping her during the difficult time of her husbands unexpected passing. Gardeners, and she doesnt know exactly who, would come and help by doing extra work around her plot. Residents just came in and helped, Angela says. Weeding, cutting, trimming, harvesting whatever work needed to be done. Thats the way Residents are here at Willow Valley Communities: very supportive. Resident Keith Yoder, who coordinates the Spring Run Garden, is not at all surprised by the variety of gardeners at Willow Valley Communities or by the reasons they enjoy the activity so much. He agrees that gardening is definitely a hobby that enhances well-being. Though hes known this himself for years, he refers to an article put out by CNBC that states how gardening can add years to your life. And life to your years, Keith adds. Gardening gets you into nature. Its good exercise for your body and your mind plus, you get to eat what you grow!

Now is a Great Time to Explore Willow Valley Communities

Willow Valley Communities Manager of Sales, Margie Seagers, has been pleasantly surprised by the recent increased interest shes received from prospects wanting to learn more about life in our communities. As 2020 came to a close, she found many seniors in a reflective mood, examining where they had been, where they are now, as well as where and how they want to spend the next phase of their lives.   Ive been hearing from seniors that they want the increased support from a community they can trust, Margie said. She added that the people shes been hearing from have been doing a good job at staying safe in their own homes, but over time its gotten pretty lonely. Its also been difficult to have consistent services on their own during the pandemic. As much as people say they can depend on their adult children or close friends to help them, there does come a time when that person is unable to help because of their own family obligations. Margie has also found that Willow Valley Communities 35-plus years reputation of excellence in senior living means even more now to seniors especially Baby Boomers. She said that Lifecare, Willow Valley Communities financially smart contract that promises supportive care, if ever needed, without an increase to monthly service fees, especially has caught their attention. Baby Boomers traditionally want to feel empowered to make their own decisions, and theyve spent their time researching. They desire a secure community environment, but they want the facts, and Willow Valley Communities has several ways to tell them more about what senior living options are available to them. We are happy to have that conversation, in person or online, to give them all the information they need to make a decision that is right for them, she said.   Margie said shes had many visitors who have come to Willow Valley Communities during the COVID-19 pandemic for a safe, socially distant, in-person informational meeting. The process is very easy, she explained. Everyone goes through our screening process at the Cultural Center just two minutes away from the Welcome Center, where we then can meet. The Welcome Center has specially adapted, socially distant and private meeting areas. Prospects can comfortably meet with a Sales Counselor and get all the information they need about becoming a Resident at Willow Valley Communities. Tours are available for those interested in seeing more. For those who prefer a virtual meeting from the comfort of their own home, that is also easy to arrange. Willow Valley Communities Sales Counselors are happy to arrange an online Zoom meeting at a prospects convenience. And its as detailed as an in-person meeting, Margie noted. Willow Valley Communities Sales Counselors are known for their thorough knowledge of senior living and are able to explain all options thoroughly during an online meeting. She also said that, if needed, Sales Counselors can show close-up features of a specific residence, virtually, to a prospective Resident. Plus, virtual tours of Willow Valley Communities campus are always available online at WillowValleyCommunities.org. Its almost like being right here! Margie quipped. If youre considering a move to a secure senior living community, Willow Valley Communities is ready to provide all the information you need, whenever and however you wish. Whether its in person, online by appointment, or through WillowValleyCommunities.org, Willow Valley Communities is available to help you imagine your Life Lived Forward.

Medical care can quickly become complicated when multiple physicians, treatment plans, and care providers are involved. This level of professional guidance can be invaluable when families are managing complex diagnoses, chronic conditions, or recovery following hospitalization. For families who live outside of the Pittsburgh area but are caring for aging parents locally, having a professional care manager provides reassurance that someone is actively overseeing their loved ones care. Care managers assist these individuals by providing professional oversight, helping coordinate services, and ensuring that trusted advocates are available when healthcare decisions arise.Another important component of the Complete Care Strategies approach is proactive planning. Rather than waiting for a crisis to occur, care managers help families identify potential risks early. Concerns such as fall hazards in the home, medication mismanagement, or subtle cognitive changes can often be addressed before they lead to serious complications. Early intervention allows seniors to remain independent longer while reducing the likelihood of hospitalizations or emergency situations.Families exploring care management services often also research additional senior care resources such as home care providers, elder law attorneys, senior housing communities, and caregiver support programs.
