Florida - Southwest

Naples, Florida is home to one of the highest concentrations of retirees in the country. With its coastal lifestyle, active adult communities, and strong healthcare network, it’s no surprise that many older adults choose Naples as the place to enjoy their later years. But with longer life expectancy and rising costs of healthcare and long-term care, managing investments wisely has never been more important.

For seniors and families in Naples, investment decisions aren’t just about growing wealth—they’re about preserving security, supporting independence, and planning for the unexpected. That’s where working with a trusted Financial Advisor, like Chris Scanlan of Edward Jones, becomes especially valuable.

Why Investment Planning Looks Different for Seniors

As people move into retirement or semi-retirement, investment priorities often shift. Instead of aggressive growth, many seniors focus on:

  • Stability and income
  • Managing risk
  • Protecting assets
  • Planning for healthcare and Long Term Care Insurance
  • Leaving a legacy for family or causes they care about

A thoughtful investment strategy takes all of these goals into account while adapting to changing life stages.

The Role of a Financial Advisor in Senior Investment Planning

A knowledgeable Financial Advisor does more than recommend investments. They help seniors understand how their money supports their lifestyle today—and tomorrow.

Chris Scanlan, with Edward Jones, works closely with seniors and families in Naples to provide personalized Financial Services rooted in education, communication, and long-term relationships.

This approach helps clients:

  • Understand their investment options
  • Feel confident in their decisions
  • Avoid unnecessary risk
  • Adjust strategies as needs evolve

Local Insight: Investing in a Retirement-Focused Community

Naples’ population trends show a growing number of adults age 65 and older, many living on fixed or semi-fixed incomes. At the same time, seniors here often face:

  • Rising property taxes and insurance costs
  • Increasing healthcare expenses
  • The potential need for Long Term Care Insurance
  • Market volatility impacting retirement income

Investment strategies must reflect both the local cost of living and the realities of aging.

Building an Investment Strategy with Purpose

A strong investment plan starts with understanding what the money is meant to do. For many seniors, that includes:

  • Supporting day-to-day living expenses
  • Funding healthcare needs
  • Preparing for long-term care
  • Maintaining flexibility for life changes

A Financial Advisor helps align investments with real-world goals—not just numbers on a statement.

Common Focus Areas Include:

  • Income-generating investments
  • Risk management strategies
  • Portfolio diversification
  • Planning around Long Term Care Insurance needs

Long Term Care Insurance: An Important Investment Consideration

One of the biggest financial risks seniors face is the cost of long-term care. Whether care is needed at home, in assisted living, or in a skilled nursing facility, costs can add up quickly.

While Long Term Care Insurance isn’t an investment itself, it plays a critical role in protecting investments.

A Financial Advisor helps clients:

  • Understand long-term care costs
  • Evaluate whether Long Term Care Insurance is appropriate
  • Plan investments with potential care needs in mind
  • Protect assets from being depleted unexpectedly

Managing Risk While Staying Invested

Many seniors worry about market volatility—especially after retirement. The goal isn’t to avoid investing altogether, but to manage risk thoughtfully.

Investment strategies may focus on:

  • Balancing growth and preservation
  • Avoiding emotional decision-making
  • Adjusting allocations over time
  • Creating buffers for market downturns

Advisor Insight:
“Successful investing in retirement isn’t about chasing returns—it’s about building a plan you can stay committed to through every market cycle.”

How Financial Services Support Ongoing Life Changes

Life doesn’t stop changing after retirement. Investment strategies should adapt as:

  • Health needs evolve
  • Family roles shift
  • Housing decisions change
  • Care needs arise

Working with a Financial Advisor provides continuity and reassurance during these transitions.

2027 Medicare Annual Enrollment is here!

VERY IMPORTANT: Regarding Medicare it is illegal for an insurance agent to call, text, e-mail, knock on your door, hang anything on your door or vehicle or approach you without your consent. If they do ask for their National Producer Number NPN, and you will hear a click and removed from their list. If they dont hang up, get their number and report them to Medicare. There is so much fraud where people are being switched to plans that they never approved or they were miss led. Shop local, do background checks before you give anyone your personal information. You can google them, google reviews, check their Facebook, etc. Make sure that if you are working with someone you can call them personally if you have any questions or concerns. Medicare Annual Enrollment is October 15-December 7th for January 1st, 2027, effective. What can be changed at this time is Medicare Part D Drug Plans and Medicare Part C (Advantage Plans). You should have received your Notification of Change from your current insurance plan. This outlines the current year to the new year changes, as an example if your specialist provider costs $20 now it might say $35 in 2027 (no correlation just an example). Medicare Part C / Advantage Plans, most carriers have raised out of pocket limits and copays along with decreased extra value benefits for 2027.  Annually Medicare Advantage Plans make changes. They must all include the same features as Original Medicare but not at the same cost share. They can have a premium, Medical and or Prescription deductible, copays and coinsurance can change. Extra Value such as Vision, Dental, Over the Counter, Part B Give Back, transportation, etc. can all change or be eliminated. Medicare sets the annual in-network out of pocket maximum; in 2026 it is $9,250 for in-network and $13,900 out-of-network services combined (2027 this will increase). However, individual insurance plans may set lower limits. The old saying if it is not broken do not fix it DOES NOT apply to Annual Enrollment. Every year I see many people that have not checked/compared their current plan to what is new. I have saved so many people hundreds and in many cases thousands of dollars. You should be working with a broker that represents many insurance companies. Make sure you check them out, especially if you are going to allow someone in your house. I recommend meeting in their office. For me we represent most insurance carriers in our area and carrying all their literature with me is almost impossible. We use three large screens so that our clients can clearly see and compare the differences between the plans. The minimum information always needed is all your doctors, medications: names, milligrams, and dosage. We load your current plan and then compare it to all the other companies in your area. What companies have all your doctors, the price for your medication normally makes a significant difference. Then the Extra Value is what is most important to you. We do NOT CHARGE for your review and if warranted to change your insurance plan. Ethics is most important and if you are on the best plan we will tell you, plus you can see for yourself. If your plan was CANCELLED/DROPPED for 2027, you have a guaranteed issue into a Medigap/Medicare Supplement.  This is huge and very important, know your options!Medicare Seminars they are good for general information. A one-to-one appointment where you can dive into your doctors and medication is best, plus you can then compare other companies in one place. Medicare Part D most insurance carriers have taken away insurance agents ability to help you with your Part D Only drug plans this does not apply to most Advantage plans, standalone drug plans as well as Advantage Plans, you wont have to pay more than $2,400 in out-of-pocket drug costs, which include deductibles, co-pays, coinsurance. It is especially important to check your plans formulary as medication must be in formulary to be capped. 2027 RX deductible will be capped at $715.00. As a reminder the cost of the plan is not as important as the cost plus your medications, that is what you look at, the total cost. It is important to know what the medication is used for to determine if it is covered by the plan. Example Wycovy may be covered but to be covered it must be used for certain heart conditions or diabetes, Medicare does not cover weight lose medications at this time.  As a reminder if you choose NOT to ENROLL in a Part D drug plan and in later years you want one you will have to wait for Annual Enrollment and then you will assed a penalty for every month you did not have a drug plan, that penalty will last for the REST OF YOUR LIFE! When you turn 65 you are eligible for Medicare, once you have worked 40 quarters roughly 10 years there is no cost for Medicare Part A. Part A covers Hospitals, Skilled Nursing, Home Health & Hospice. Medicare Part B you can choose to take at 65, or you can hold off if you are still working and have credible coverage. If you do not have group health insurance that is considered qualified, and then you want Medicare you would have a late enrollment penalty for each month you did not have Part B & Part D, and that penalty will last for the rest of your life. Part B covers doctors, imaging, blood work, ambulance, durable medical equipment, etc. Part D is a Medicare Drug Plan and covers medications. During your initial enrollment period it is especially important to understand your options! Medicare Supplements/Medigap Plans are NOT guaranteed issues; you may need to medically qualify. You can purchase a Medigap Plan during your 1st 6 months on Medicare Part B without medical underwriting. There are a lot of things you need to know. Again, work with an agent you can trust! Especially important: when you move you need to know your options. Can you keep the same plan? Do you need to make a change and what does that look like? Logical Insurance Solutions is a SWFL Insurance Broker that works with most of the insurance carriers in your area, we are happy to help you through the maze. Senior Investment Services in Sarasota, FL

Retirement changes the purpose of investing. During working years, many people focus primarily on accumulating assets. Later in life, the questions often become more complex: How much can I safely withdraw? How much investment risk still makes sense? How should my portfolio work alongside Social Security, pensions, insurance, taxes, and estate-planning goals? For older adults looking for senior investment services in Sarasota, FL, professional guidance can help organize those decisions around personal circumstances rather than market headlines or one-size-fits-all recommendations. What Are Senior Investment Services?Senior investment services generally focus on managing assets during or approaching retirement.Depending on the investor, planning may involve: Stocks Bonds Mutual funds Exchange-traded funds Managed portfolios Annuities Retirement accounts Alternative investments Cash and short-term reserves Income-distribution strategies Asset allocation and diversification Risk management Investment planning becomes particularly important during retirement because losses may be harder to recover from when someone is simultaneously withdrawing money from a portfolio. The SEC's Investor.gov resources encourage older investors to regularly review asset allocation, understand investment risks, examine fees, monitor accounts, and confirm that an investment professional is properly registered.Level Four Financial Chad Choate Phone: 941-730-5983 Office: 1001 3rd Avenue West, Suite 500, Bradenton, FL 34205Chad Choate, III, AAMS, CEPA is a Business Unit Leader, Private Wealth Advisor, and Insurance Agent with Level Four.Investment Options Through Level FourLevel Four's platform provides access to several types of investment strategies. Its current Seniors Blue Book profile identifies options including: Equity strategies Fixed-income strategies Separately managed accounts Asset-allocation models Stocks Bonds ETFs Mutual funds Annuities Options Alternative investments Retirement and joint brokerage accounts The firm also offers broader capital-management resources intended to integrate investments with financial planning, retirement, insurance, taxes, and wealth-transfer considerations. Why Asset Allocation Matters in RetirementAsset allocation refers to how an investor divides money among categories such as stocks, bonds, and cash. There is no universally correct allocation for every retiree.Important considerations include: Age Retirement income Expected withdrawals Emergency reserves Other assets Health expenses Risk tolerance Investment time horizon Legacy goals Investor.gov explains that diversification can help spread investment risk and that asset allocations may need to be rebalanced as financial circumstances and markets change. An older adult living primarily on Social Security with limited liquid savings may need a very different investment approach from someone with a pension, substantial cash reserves, several investment accounts, and significant assets intended for future generations.Retirement Income and Investment WithdrawalsAccumulating money is only one stage of retirement planning. Eventually, many retirees begin drawing money from investment accounts. That creates questions such as: Which accounts should be tapped first? How much should remain invested? How much cash should be kept available? How will withdrawals affect taxes? How will required minimum distributions fit into the plan? What happens during a major market decline? Investor.gov specifically encourages older investors to create and periodically revisit a plan for withdrawing money from investment accounts.Level Four's broader platform includes retirement planning alongside investment management, allowing these questions to be considered together rather than in isolation.Business Owners Approaching RetirementChoate also holds the Certified Exit Planning Advisor, or CEPA, designation. For Sarasota-area business owners, retirement planning may depend heavily on what happens to the business. Level Four's business resources include exit planning, succession-related strategies, retirement plans, risk management, and other business-owner planning services. Why Senior Investment Services Matter Locally in SarasotaSarasota County is one of Florida's most retirement-oriented communities. The U.S. Census Bureau reports that 38.8% of Sarasota County residents are age 65 or older, while the county's estimated 2025 population was 479,958.For many local residents, investment accounts are no longer simply long-term savings vehicles. They may now be expected to help fund: Monthly living expenses Travel Healthcare Long-term care Housing changes Gifts to family Charitable goals Future inheritance That makes investment planning especially relevant in Sarasota's large retiree population. How to Get Started1.
