Create a Cheerful Holiday for All Ages

The holiday season can be filled with family, cheer, and joy, but it can also bring feelings of loneliness and stress for many older adults. Travel can be difficult, along with special diets and shopping. Here are some things that you can do to help diminish holiday stress for your older family members and friends.

holiday mealsFood & Dietary Restrictions

As we age, we must take a closer look at our diets and that can make it difficult for seniors to enjoy decadent holiday meals. Foods that require a little extra chewing strength aren’t a great option for seniors. Some foods don’t mix well with certain medications and sometimes, as our digestive systems change, certain foods can cause a bad reaction. A simple solution to the stress-inducing issue is to talk to any seniors who will be attending your holiday event, and make sure to incorporate foods that can be enjoyed by everyone.

Travel & Limited Mobility

Another common activity during the holidays that isn’t always easy for seniors is travel. Whether family is across town or across the country, limited mobility may prohibit some older adults from finding their way to the holiday gathering. Offer assistance – send someone to pick them up, arrange a cab or uber, or bring the celebration to them. Find out what is easiest for them and try to accommodate their needs. If long distance travel is involved, you can help them navigate the internet to find the best options for plane or train tickets. And if they can’t make it to the gathering, make sure to call them! Or even better, use your favorite video chat program if they have a device that will support it. Let them know that they are loved.

Missing a Loved One During the Holidays

Old or young, if you have suffered the loss of a loved one, the holidays can bring extra feelings of grief. A good way to combat the loneliness or sadness a senior may feel at this time of year is to talk about it. Share your personal happy anecdote about the deceased and ask for more uplifting stories. If you avoid talking about the death of a loved one, it could leave others feeling as if you’ve forgotten or moved on. Let their life be a cheerful memory during the holiday season.

Holidays are cheerful, but they’re also stressful, and the stress can be amplified as we age. Reach out to the seniors that are closest to you, ask about their lives, what they need to eat or travel comfortably. Most importantly, let them know you are thinking about them and they are loved. Make sure holiday stress doesn’t distract from the cheer and joy of the season.

When Pain Changes Everything: Understanding and Overcoming Neuropathy

Aging is often pictured as a rewarding stage of lifefilled with long-awaited travel, quiet walks with a spouse, quality time with grandchildren, and new hobbies. For many, these years are rightfully called the Golden Years. But for millions of Americans, an invisible and relentless challenge interrupts these dreams: neuropathy. This debilitating condition impacts more than 20 million people in the United States, and the majority of those affected are over the age of 55. For residents of Northern Colorado and beyond, neuropathy is more than just discomfortit can drastically alter mobility, independence, and overall quality of life.In this article, well dive into what neuropathy is, why it develops, and how modern, non-invasive treatments can restore hope and function. What is Neuropathy?Neuropathy refers to damage or dysfunction of the nerves. While there are different types, peripheral neuropathywhich affects nerves in the feet, legs, and handsis the most common form linked to aging.Common symptoms include: Tingling or pins and needles sensations Burning or stabbing pain Cold or numb feet and hands Swelling in the extremities Loss of balance and coordination Muscle weakness Restless legs, especially at night What makes neuropathy especially difficult is that these symptoms dont just cause physical discomfortthey also interfere with everyday life. Activities like walking to the mailbox, enjoying a hike on Colorados trails, or holding a grandchild can become challenging or even dangerous. What Causes Neuropathy? While there are many possible triggers, type 2 diabetes remains the number one cause. High blood sugar levels over time damage nerves and the small blood vessels that supply them.Other common causes include: Side effects from certain medications Nerve damage after surgeries Cancer treatments such as chemotherapy Sedentary lifestyles that impair circulation Autoimmune conditions Chronic inflammation Because neuropathy can stem from multiple factors, many individuals experience frustration when traditional treatmentssuch as prescription medicationsdont fully relieve their symptoms. The Traditional Approach: Why Many Still StruggleDoctors often prescribe medications like pain relievers, antidepressants, or anti-seizure drugs to dull neuropathy symptoms. While these can provide temporary relief, they rarely address the root causes: inflammation, poor circulation, and nerve dysfunction. The result? Patients remain stuck in a cycle of symptom management rather than true healing. For people in Northern Colorado and across the nation, this ongoing struggle has left many searching for better answers.A New Perspective: Targeting the Root of NeuropathyWhen we break neuropathy down to its core, two hallmarks stand out: Chronic inflammation that damages nerve tissue. Decreased blood flow that starves nerves of oxygen and nutrients. If the nerve isnt being nourished and protected, dysfunction and pain follow. Therefore, the key to real improvement is restoring circulation and reducing inflammationso the nerve itself can heal.Innovative, Non-Invasive SolutionsAt Inner Vitality Chiropractic in Northern Colorado, Dr. Jeromy Overholt and his team take a multi-pronged approach to neuropathy care. Instead of relying on medications alone, they use advanced, non-invasive technologies that directly target the underlying issues.Key therapies include:1. Shockwave TherapyShockwave therapy uses acoustic waves to stimulate blood flow and promote tissue repair. By breaking up scar tissue and increasing circulation, nerves receive more oxygen and nutrients, accelerating recovery.2. Vibration TherapyGentle vibration therapy improves balance and circulation while stimulating the nerve pathways in the feet and legs. This helps patients regain stability, mobility, and confidence in their daily movements.3. Class-IV Laser TherapyLaser therapy penetrates deep into tissues to reduce inflammation, decrease pain, and promote healing at the cellular level. Patients often report both immediate and long-term relief after treatment.4. Nutritional SupportSince nutrition plays a central role in nerve health, targeted protocols are integrated into the plan. Vitamins, minerals, and lifestyle changes help reduce systemic inflammation and support lasting improvement.Together, these therapies create a powerful recipe for restoring nerve function and improving quality of lifewithout surgery or heavy reliance on medication.Real-Life Impact: Restoring the Golden YearsImagine being able to walk around Old Town Fort Collins without worrying about balance. Or being able to chase after your grandkids in the backyard again. For many patients, these arent just hopeful dreamstheyre achievable results with the right approach to neuropathy care.Dr. Overholt shares, Our mission is to give people their lives back. Neuropathy doesnt have to be a life sentence. With the right therapies, patients can enjoy activities they thought were lost forever. Why Local Care Matters in Northern ColoradoNorthern Colorado is known for its active lifestyle, from hiking trails in Estes Park to fishing spots along the Poudre River. Living with neuropathy can make these opportunities seem out of reach. Thats why local, specialized care is essential.Residents benefit not only from advanced therapies but also from the convenience of having a trusted clinic nearbyno need to travel far for relief. Inner Vitality Chiropractic combines cutting-edge technology with compassionate, personalized care for every patient.Frequently Asked Questions1. Can neuropathy be cured? While neuropathy may not always be fully reversible, significant improvements in symptoms and function are possible when inflammation is reduced and circulation is restored. Many patients experience lasting relief with the right treatment plan.2. Is treatment painful? No. The therapies usedsuch as laser, vibration, and shockwaveare non-invasive and designed to be gentle yet effective. Most patients report little to no discomfort during sessions.3. How long before I see results? Many patients begin noticing improvement within a few weeks, though results vary depending on the severity and underlying causes. A comprehensive plan is tailored to each individual.4. What happens if neuropathy is left untreated? Without intervention, neuropathy often worsens over time, leading to increased pain, numbness, and risk of falls. Early treatment can slow or even reverse progression.5. Do I need a referral from my primary care physician? Not typically. Patients can schedule a consultation directly with Inner Vitality Chiropractic to explore treatment options.Final ThoughtsNeuropathy changes everythinghow you move, how you live, and how you dream about the future. The Power and Purpose: Why Giving Back Matters at Every Age

The Power of Purpose: Why Giving Back Matters at Every AgeAs we grow older, the definition of a meaningful life evolves but the desire to contribute, connect, and feel valued remains constant. In fact, countless studies confirm what many older adults already know through plain common sense: staying engaged in our communities isnt just good for the soul, its good for our health.According to Psychology Today, research shows that older adults who volunteer tend to report lower levels of depression, improved cognitive function, and even reduced risk of chronic diseases. On average, older volunteers are 20 to 60% [EZ1] [HG2] less likely to die over any given year than people who arent engaged in their community. In other words, giving back helps us to age stronger, with greater vitality and resilience.Volunteering also reinforces something deeper: a sense of belonging. When we connect through service, we affirm our place in the community. We become part of something larger than ourselves. And we remind others especially the next generation of the wisdom and strength that come with age.Volunteering, mentoring, and acts of service are more than nice things to do. They are powerful tools for fighting isolation, building new friendships, and rediscovering a sense of purpose. Whether its reading with a child, supporting a family caregiver, or simply being present for someone who is lonely, these contributions have ripple effects in communities, many of which reflect back to the volunteer. Having a reason to get up in the morning and knowing that someone is counting on you is key to a longer, healthier life filled with meaning and connection. Everyone has something to give. Experience. Patience. Time. Perspective. In giving, we receive so much more. We rediscover joy and inspire hope. We prove that its never too late to make a difference. In the end, the question isnt whether we can still contribute as we age. Its how much brighter our communities become when we do.Written By: Honey Goodman, Aging Strong Program Director a program of Jannus, Inc.Source:  https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/the-science-of-kindness/201905/why-do-volunteers-live-longer  [EZ1]This stat is a bit funky, heres my source: Why Do Volunteers Live Longer? | Psychology Today  [HG2]@Elaine- I think this is fine.  (I will add the source).  Thank you!
