The holiday season can be filled with family, cheer, and joy, but it can also bring feelings of loneliness and stress for many older adults. Travel can be difficult, along with special diets and shopping. Here are some things that you can do to help diminish holiday stress for your older family members and friends.
As we age, we must take a closer look at our diets and that can make it difficult for seniors to enjoy decadent holiday meals. Foods that require a little extra chewing strength aren’t a great option for seniors. Some foods don’t mix well with certain medications and sometimes, as our digestive systems change, certain foods can cause a bad reaction. A simple solution to the stress-inducing issue is to talk to any seniors who will be attending your holiday event, and make sure to incorporate foods that can be enjoyed by everyone.
Another common activity during the holidays that isn’t always easy for seniors is travel. Whether family is across town or across the country, limited mobility may prohibit some older adults from finding their way to the holiday gathering. Offer assistance – send someone to pick them up, arrange a cab or uber, or bring the celebration to them. Find out what is easiest for them and try to accommodate their needs. If long distance travel is involved, you can help them navigate the internet to find the best options for plane or train tickets. And if they can’t make it to the gathering, make sure to call them! Or even better, use your favorite video chat program if they have a device that will support it. Let them know that they are loved.
Old or young, if you have suffered the loss of a loved one, the holidays can bring extra feelings of grief. A good way to combat the loneliness or sadness a senior may feel at this time of year is to talk about it. Share your personal happy anecdote about the deceased and ask for more uplifting stories. If you avoid talking about the death of a loved one, it could leave others feeling as if you’ve forgotten or moved on. Let their life be a cheerful memory during the holiday season.
Holidays are cheerful, but they’re also stressful, and the stress can be amplified as we age. Reach out to the seniors that are closest to you, ask about their lives, what they need to eat or travel comfortably. Most importantly, let them know you are thinking about them and they are loved. Make sure holiday stress doesn’t distract from the cheer and joy of the season.

Why Brain Health Is EssentialBrain health impacts every aspect of our lives. A healthy brain ensures: Sharp Cognitive Function: Supporting learning, problem-solving, and decision-making. Resilient Memory: Helping us retain and recall important information. Emotional Stability: Allowing us to navigate challenges and maintain mental well-being. Physical Coordination: Facilitating essential tasks like walking, speaking, and balance. Neglecting brain health can lead to difficulties in daily life, including forgetfulness, confusion, or susceptibility to neurological disorders such as Alzheimers or dementia. Lifestyle Habits to Promote Brain Health Physical Activity Exercise increases blood flow to the brain, delivering oxygen and essential nutrients. Regular activities like walking, cycling, or yoga can improve memory and reduce the risk of cognitive decline. Brain-Boosting Nutrition A balanced diet rich in certain nutrients is critical for brain health: Fatty Fish: Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, essential for brain cell health. Colorful Fruits and Vegetables: Packed with antioxidants that combat oxidative stress. Whole Grains: Provide steady energy for optimal brain performance. Nuts and Seeds: Offer healthy fats and vitamin E to support cognitive function. Cognitive Stimulation Keep your brain active with activities that challenge its capacity, such as: Learning a new language or skill. Solving puzzles, crosswords, or playing chess. Engaging in creative hobbies like painting or music. Quality Sleep Sleep is vital for memory consolidation and mental clarity. Aim for 79 hours of sleep each night, and maintain a regular sleep schedule to support overall brain health. Stress Management Chronic stress negatively affects the brain, shrinking areas responsible for memory and decision-making. Stress-reducing practices like meditation, deep breathing, and mindfulness can help maintain mental balance. Social Connections Strong social ties contribute to emotional well-being and cognitive longevity. Spend time with family, join clubs or groups, and maintain regular interactions with friends to stay mentally and socially engaged. Avoid Harmful Substances Limiting alcohol and avoiding tobacco products can protect the brain from long-term damage and cognitive decline. Preventing Cognitive DeclineWhile aging is inevitable, cognitive decline is not. Steps to reduce its risk include: Monitoring Health: Manage conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, and cholesterol, as they can impact brain function. Mental Health Care: Address issues like anxiety or depression, which may impair cognition if left untreated. Regular Check-Ups: Work with healthcare providers to screen for early signs of neurological disorders. The Lifelong Benefits of LearningContinuing to learn throughout life keeps the brain adaptable and engaged. Whether its pursuing a hobby, attending workshops, or taking online courses, lifelong learning fosters new neural connections and helps preserve cognitive health.
What are Life Activity Stations?According to the Goodwin Living Citizenship Program, sensory simulation has been researched and proven to be an effective and valuable tool for those caring for individuals at any stage of dementia. Memory support practitioners have utilized this method for many years. Our stations are thoughtfully designed to engage our residents in sensory experiences, enhancing their senses, emotions, and responses.Areas include:Baby: This station features a bassinette, clothing, diapers, bottles, and, of course, babies to hold and dress. It helps our residents find a sense of purpose as they nurture and care for the little ones.Travel: The world is within reach, with vibrant maps that spark memories of trips to distant lands, local maps that evoke nostalgia for living in one of the greatest cities, Pittsburgh, and a variety of luggage and items that create the feeling of traveling back in time.Floral Arrangements: Our Flower Store allows residents to stroll by, take a flower, or create their own arrangement. They can then take their arrangements back to their apartments to enjoy.Touch Sensory: Designed to soothe anxiety, this touch sensory activity station is created for residents seeking tactile stimulation.Laundry Area: Our laundry station provides a sense of purpose, giving residents the opportunity to fold laundry and feel actively involved in daily tasks. Our aim is not to offer a one-size-fits-all solution, but rather to assist our residents in their daily lives by providing comfort and engagement within their homes. These stations bring joy to their routines and encourage exploration while also offering opportunities for activities that allow individuals to pursue independent interests if they prefer not to join group activities.
