Based in Colorado Springs, Mt. Carmel Veterans Service Center plays a central role in serving one of the nation’s largest per-capita veteran populations. With military installations such as Fort Carson, Peterson Space Force Base, Schriever Space Force Base, NORAD, and the U.S. Air Force Academy nearby, the region attracts veterans from across the country. Mt. Carmel provides stability and guidance for these veterans and their families—ensuring access to services remains local, accessible, and responsive.
Veteran demographics are shifting. While younger veterans may face challenges related to career transition or reintegration, older veterans increasingly require assistance navigating healthcare systems, financial stability, and community-based support. At the same time, families and caregivers are taking on greater responsibility as veterans age.
Mt. Carmel Veterans Service Center addresses this complex landscape with a model built on adaptability and coordination. Rather than focusing on a single category of care, Mt. Carmel evaluates each veteran’s situation comprehensively and connects them with appropriate resources.
As Laura Cisneros of Mt. Carmel explains:
“Every veteran’s experience is different. Our responsibility is to understand the full picture and offer support that aligns with each individual’s needs.”
What distinguishes Mt. Carmel from larger, national organizations is its local focus. Staff members understand the realities of living in Colorado Springs, including healthcare access points, housing considerations, and the cost-of-living pressures that can impact veterans on fixed incomes.
This local insight allows Mt. Carmel to offer guidance that is practical and grounded in the actual conditions veterans face day to day. Veterans and families receive referrals and information that make sense for their location and circumstances.
Mt. Carmel Veterans Service Center serves as a central access point for veterans seeking assistance, offering guidance across multiple areas:
Veteran and family services focused on individualized support
Behavioral health and wellness referrals
Employment and career transition assistance
Financial education and stability resources
Community connection and peer engagement
Rather than navigating these needs independently, veterans benefit from coordinated guidance that reduces stress and confusion.
Colorado Springs is home to a growing population of aging veterans, many of whom chose the region for its military infrastructure and natural beauty. As these veterans enter retirement years, new challenges often arise—managing chronic health conditions, navigating benefits, or requiring caregiver support.
Mt. Carmel provides assistance for older veterans and families by:
Connecting them with senior-focused healthcare and support services
Offering referrals for housing, wellness, and financial resources
Supporting caregivers and spouses through education and guidance
By addressing these needs proactively, Mt. Carmel helps seniors maintain stability and dignity as they age.
Mt. Carmel’s effectiveness is strengthened through partnerships with healthcare providers, housing organizations, employers, and nonprofit agencies throughout El Paso County and Southern Colorado. These relationships allow Mt. Carmel to act as a connector rather than a silo—bridging gaps between services and ensuring continuity of care.
For veterans, this means less time navigating systems and more time focusing on recovery, stability, and personal goals.
Trust is a critical component of effective veteran support. Mt. Carmel Veterans Service Center prioritizes transparency, confidentiality, and respect in all interactions. Veterans are treated as individuals with diverse experiences—not as cases to be processed.
“Respect and dignity guide every interaction we have with veterans and their families,” says Laura Cisneros. “That trust is the foundation of effective support.”
This commitment has earned Mt. Carmel a strong reputation within the Colorado Springs veteran community.
While Mt. Carmel’s services are rooted in relationships, the organization also relies on best practices and data-informed approaches to improve outcomes. Programs are evaluated for effectiveness, and partnerships are built strategically to meet emerging veteran needs.
This balance between evidence and empathy allows Mt. Carmel to deliver support that is both compassionate and effective.
National veteran programs provide important benefits, but they cannot replace the value of local, community-based organizations. Mt. Carmel offers immediacy, relevance, and understanding that only comes from being embedded in the community it serves.
Veterans and families know there is a nearby organization that understands military culture, local systems, and the realities of life in Southern Colorado.
Whether a veteran is navigating a major life transition, entering retirement, or seeking stable long-term support, Mt. Carmel Veterans Service Center provides a reliable, informed starting point. Their locally driven approach ensures veterans and families are never navigating challenges alone.

Social Security and the New Senior Tax DeductionBy Senior Tax Advisory GroupTax law changes may help retirees keep more of their income. However, headlines about no tax on Social Security can create confusion. We want seniors to understand what has changed and how the new rules fit their retirement plans. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act created a temporary additional deduction for people age 65 and older. For tax years 2025 through 2028, eligible individuals may deduct up to $6,000. Married couples filing jointly may deduct up to $12,000 when both spouses qualify. There could be a ROTH conversion opportunity at No Additional Tax Cost! This deduction is available whether you itemize or take the standard deduction. Married taxpayers must file jointly to claim it, and each person claiming the deduction must have a qualifying Social Security number.Income limits matter. The deduction begins phasing out when Modified Adjusted Gross Income exceeds $75,000 for an individual or $150,000 for a married couple filing jointly. Taxable IRA withdrawals, capital gains, or Roth conversions may reduce the deduction available. The law did not repeal federal taxation of Social Security benefits. Depending on your combined income, up to 85% of benefits may still be included in taxable income. The new deduction reduces taxable income; it does not change the formula determining how much Social Security is taxable. Eligibility also does not require receiving Social Security. For example, a qualifying couple with both spouses age 65 or older could receive the full $12,000 deduction. If that entire deduction offsets income otherwise taxed at 12%, their federal tax savings would be $1,440. Actual savings depend on their tax situation. Before making withdrawals or changing withholding, review your income and eligibility. Social Security claiming decisions still deserve coordination with taxes, savings, and survivor needs. We believe retirement planning begins with understanding people. Contact Senior Tax Advisory Group at 719-596-4844 or visit www.springstax.com for help evaluating these changes within your retirement plan.
