Sage Health: Transforming Senior Care

As we age, our healthcare needs become more complex, requiring a level of care that goes beyond traditional primary care. With three locations in Mobile, Alabama, Sage Health stands out as a beacon of innovative senior care. Focused on delivering high-performance primary care, cardiology, and wellness services specifically for seniors, Sage Health is redefining what it means to provide comprehensive and compassionate healthcare for the elderly.

The Vision of Sage Health

Sage Health’s mission is to offer a holistic healthcare experience tailored to the unique needs of seniors. This is not just about treating illnesses; it’s about promoting overall wellness and helping seniors lead fulfilling, healthy lives. The healthcare model at Sage Health revolves around a patient-centered approach, emphasizing personal relationships, coordinated care, and proactive wellness programs.

Comprehensive Services at Sage Health

  1. Primary Care: At the heart of Sage Health is its primary care service, which is designed to cater specifically to the needs of seniors. The primary care physicians at Sage Health manage a smaller number of patients, allowing for more personalized and attentive care. This model ensures that each patient receives the time and attention they need during every visit.
  2. Cardiology: Heart health is a critical concern for seniors, and Sage Health addresses this with dedicated cardiology services. Their cardiologists work closely with primary care physicians to provide integrated care that focuses on prevention, early detection, and management of cardiovascular conditions.
  3. Wellness Programs: Sage Health believes in the importance of maintaining wellness, not just treating illness. Their wellness programs include fitness classes designed to keep seniors active and engaged.
  4. Hospital Coverage: By collaborating with hospitalists, you receive the best hospital care when you need it.
  5. Care Coordination: Navigating the healthcare system can be challenging, especially for seniors. Sage Health provides a dedicated care concierge who coordinates all healthcare needs, from scheduling appointments to arranging transportation. This service ensures that seniors can focus on their health without worrying about the logistics of their care.

The Benefits of Choosing Sage Health

Choosing Sage Health comes with numerous benefits that significantly enhance the quality of life for seniors:

  1. Personalized Care: With smaller patient panels, seniors receive more personalized attention and care from their physicians. This leads to better health outcomes and a stronger patient-doctor relationship.
  2. Coordinated Care: The care concierge ensures that all aspects of a patient’s health are coordinated seamlessly. This reduces the stress of managing multiple appointments and services, making it easier for seniors to stay on top of their health.
  3. Focus on Prevention and Wellness: Sage Health’s proactive approach to wellness helps prevent illnesses and manage chronic conditions more effectively. Their wellness programs encourage healthy living, which can lead to longer, more fulfilling lives.
  4. Community Engagement: Sage Health fosters a sense of community among its patients. Through social gatherings and wellness activities, seniors can build meaningful connections with others, combating loneliness and improving mental health.

Commitment to Excellence

There is a reason why Sage Health takes seniors’ healthcare personally.  Sage Health was born following a personal experience that illustrated how seniors are often treated in today’s healthcare system.

Our CEO, John Haskell, found his calling when his father was hospitalized for over a month.  During this time, his primary care provider was nowhere to be found.  Specialists came in and out, some never read the medical records, and the hospital pharmacy accidentally over-dosed him while he was critically ill.  No one was accountable for his well-being and the family had to intervene on his behalf.

Although he fully recovered, the experience had a lasting impact on John Haskell.  Driven to ensure that other seniors would never be treated this way, he founded Sage Health.

Sage Health was founded in 2022, but our team has been serving seniors for many years.  With over 50 senior-focused clinics being built in the past that now serve more than 60,000 seniors in communities across the United States

Anger, Resentment, and Guilt: The Inter-Connected Emotions of Family Caregiving

Anger, Resentment, and Guilt: The Inter-Connected Emotions of Family CaregivingBeing a family caregiver is an emotional roller coaster. On the one hand, it feels good to care for someone you love. On the other hand, it can be stressful, time-consuming, and draining. This can lead to a set of interconnected emotions namely anger, resentment, and guilt.AngerAnger often comes from a sense of obligation or being taken for granted. Caregivers can feel as though theyre stuck with the biggest workload because theyre the oldest sibling, theyre closest to the one receiving care, or they are the most responsible. From the outside looking in, its hard for someone else to understand the time and effort youre putting in, and that can trigger anger in a caregiver. Caregivers want to know, and hear, that they are appreciated and doing a good job.ResentmentFeeling resentment is similar to feeling anger, but not quite the same.Psychologists label the feeling as the re-experiencing of past wrongdoings, real or perceived, a feeling that youre stuck serving the person, indefinitely, and thats causing your anger and discontent with the caregiving responsibilities. This means resentment is often aimed at the person youre caring for. This can happen as your loved ones aging process or illness creates more responsibilities for you and makes you take on an additional role on top of your everyday life.GuiltGuilt is a particularly draining emotion. It typically comes after noticing feelings of anger and resentment. Once you reflect on your emotions and begin to feel bad that youve developed hostile feelings towards a loved one, guilt is the next logical response. It can also be a primary driver of caregiver stress and burnout, as many family caregivers feel guilty for needing a break or not being able to do more for a loved one. These feelings of guilt can be related to many things, such as:               Feeling you are not spending enough time caring for your parent(s)               Feeling like youre not spending enough time with your kids because you are caring for your parent(s)               Feeling that your spouse might be the last person you think about.               Not taking care of yourself, missing a workout or being unfocused at work. You can also feel guilty about not having your parents move in with you or leaving your parents in a house they can no longer manage. And sometimes, you might even feel guilt thinking that your life would be easier if your parent(s) died.  How to Manage These Emotions1. Better understand the disease process of your loved one. This can help you develop the appropriate engagement style and communication patterns to reduce the likelihood of getting angry or resentful.2. Assess your ability to provide the level of care your loved one needs:               Are you physically able to care for this person?               Are you emotionally able to care for this person?               Is there an appropriate environment in which to provide the level of care that is required?3. Make a plan to provide the appropriate level of care. This will reduce your stress level because you will feel more in control.Be sure to tap into a local care manager to understand the local services and support that can be incorporated into your care plan, such as medical transportation, prescription delivery, Meals on Wheels and respite care from a home care agency such as SYNERGY HomeCare.4. Make peace that this will be an emotional time for your entire family. Theres no shame in seeking professional counseling to support you through this life-changing process.Dr. Macie P. Smith is a licensed gerontology social worker who is focused on helping families support their aging loved ones through long-term care. SYNERGY HomeCare offers no obligation home assessments.  Call Synergy HomeCare serving Mobile & Baldwin Counties in Alabama at 251-621-1900 to talk to a Home Care specialist.
