Founded in 2016, Mt. Carmel Veterans Service Center was created to meet a clear and growing need: providing comprehensive, local support for veterans and their families in one central location.
Located in Colorado Springs—a city home to five military installations including Fort Carson, Peterson Space Force Base, and the U.S. Air Force Academy—Mt. Carmel serves a community where over 80,000 veterans live and work. Many are retirees who continue to serve their communities but face new challenges with health, finances, and civilian life transitions.
Mt. Carmel’s approach combines practical services with emotional and social support, creating a true community of care.
Mt. Carmel Veterans Service Center is known for its wraparound services—meaning veterans can receive help across multiple areas of life in one place. Their holistic model addresses three main pillars of well-being:
Leaving the military can be daunting, but Mt. Carmel helps veterans make the leap with confidence. Their Transition and Employment team provides:
Career coaching and job placement assistance
Resume writing and interview preparation
Employer connections with veteran-friendly companies
Apprenticeship and training opportunities
Their staff helps veterans translate military experience into civilian success, guiding them toward sustainable, meaningful employment.
Mt. Carmel recognizes that health—both physical and mental—is key to a veteran’s stability. Through its Behavioral Health team and partner providers, veterans and family members have access to:
Confidential mental health counseling
Marriage and family therapy
Peer support programs
Stress management workshops
Physical and occupational therapy referrals
These services ensure that veterans are cared for as whole people, not just for their medical needs.
Whether it’s finding housing, applying for benefits, or managing finances, navigating veteran resources can be complex. Mt. Carmel’s Supportive Services team simplifies the process by helping with:
VA benefits applications and appeals
Housing assistance and homelessness prevention
Food and utility support
Financial literacy and emergency assistance
Their compassionate staff members work one-on-one with clients, ensuring no veteran falls through the cracks.
“Our mission is to meet veterans where they are—whether they’re just transitioning, looking for counseling, or needing help in retirement. Every story is unique, and every veteran deserves personalized care.”
— Laura Cisneros, from the Mt. Carmel Veterans Service Center team
This quote from Laura Cisneros captures what makes Mt. Carmel so special: it’s not just a service center—it’s a lifeline. The team genuinely listens, supports, and walks alongside veterans through every stage of life, from active duty to retirement.
Colorado Springs is often called “Military City, USA” for a reason. Nearly one in five residents is a veteran or active-duty service member, and the city’s strong military presence shapes its identity.
Mt. Carmel has become a cornerstone of that community, serving more than 10,000 veterans and family members annually. Their partnerships with local nonprofits, healthcare systems, and employers ensure that veterans have access to coordinated care and opportunities.
By collaborating with the City of Colorado Springs, El Paso County Veterans Services, and national partners like the VA, Mt. Carmel ensures veterans get timely, reliable, and comprehensive support right where they live.
As Colorado Springs’ veteran population ages, Mt. Carmel is also stepping up to meet the needs of senior veterans. Many older veterans face challenges such as:
Navigating Medicare and VA health benefits
Accessing home care, hospice, or assisted living resources
Managing service-connected disabilities in later life
Seeking social connection and combating isolation
Through community outreach and referrals, Mt. Carmel connects these veterans to trusted local partners, including senior living communities, home health agencies, and caregiver support programs.
Their mission extends beyond benefits—it’s about honoring service through lifelong care.
One of Mt. Carmel’s strengths is its ability to build partnerships across the Colorado Springs community. They work closely with:
Employers offering veteran hiring programs
Healthcare providers delivering specialized care for veterans
Nonprofits and faith-based groups that provide housing and food resources
Educational institutions supporting veteran students and their families
These collaborations create a network of empowerment, ensuring that veterans don’t have to navigate life’s challenges alone.
Every day, Mt. Carmel’s work changes lives. From a retired Army sergeant finding meaningful post-service employment, to a Vietnam veteran receiving counseling after decades of silent struggle, to a military widow discovering a community that understands her grief—each success story is a testament to Mt. Carmel’s impact.
Their dedication proves that when veterans have access to the right support, they thrive—and so does the entire community.

Social Security and the New Senior Tax DeductionBy Senior Tax Advisory GroupTax law changes may help retirees keep more of their income. However, headlines about no tax on Social Security can create confusion. We want seniors to understand what has changed and how the new rules fit their retirement plans. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act created a temporary additional deduction for people age 65 and older. For tax years 2025 through 2028, eligible individuals may deduct up to $6,000. Married couples filing jointly may deduct up to $12,000 when both spouses qualify. There could be a ROTH conversion opportunity at No Additional Tax Cost! This deduction is available whether you itemize or take the standard deduction. Married taxpayers must file jointly to claim it, and each person claiming the deduction must have a qualifying Social Security number.Income limits matter. The deduction begins phasing out when Modified Adjusted Gross Income exceeds $75,000 for an individual or $150,000 for a married couple filing jointly. Taxable IRA withdrawals, capital gains, or Roth conversions may reduce the deduction available. The law did not repeal federal taxation of Social Security benefits. Depending on your combined income, up to 85% of benefits may still be included in taxable income. The new deduction reduces taxable income; it does not change the formula determining how much Social Security is taxable. Eligibility also does not require receiving Social Security. For example, a qualifying couple with both spouses age 65 or older could receive the full $12,000 deduction. If that entire deduction offsets income otherwise taxed at 12%, their federal tax savings would be $1,440. Actual savings depend on their tax situation. Before making withdrawals or changing withholding, review your income and eligibility. Social Security claiming decisions still deserve coordination with taxes, savings, and survivor needs. We believe retirement planning begins with understanding people. Contact Senior Tax Advisory Group at 719-596-4844 or visit www.springstax.com for help evaluating these changes within your retirement plan.
