Waking up several times during the night to use the bathroom, experiencing a weak urinary stream, or dealing with recurring bladder problems can interfere with everyday life. For many older adults, these changes develop gradually, making it easy to assume they are simply part of getting older.
However, urinary symptoms should not automatically be dismissed as normal aging.
Conditions affecting the bladder, kidneys, urinary tract, and prostate can have several causes. Some are manageable through lifestyle adjustments or medication, while others require specialized testing or treatment.
For seniors and families in Bay Minette, Alabama, understanding when to consult a urologist can make an important difference in addressing symptoms before they create additional complications.
Urology Associates – Bay Minette provides access to specialized urological care for adults throughout northern Baldwin County. As part of a regional urology practice, the Bay Minette office connects patients with professional evaluation and treatment planning for urinary and reproductive health concerns.
The practice's Bay Minette location is served by David Thompson, MD, a urologist with interests in endourology, benign prostate conditions, and men's health.
Whether someone is experiencing persistent urinary symptoms, prostate enlargement, kidney stones, or changes in bladder control, knowing what urological care involves can help patients take an informed first step.
A urologist is a physician who specializes in diagnosing and treating conditions affecting the urinary system and certain parts of the male reproductive system.
The urinary system includes the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra.
These organs work together to remove waste and excess fluid from the body.
When something interferes with their normal function, patients may experience urinary discomfort, changes in frequency, difficulty emptying the bladder, or other symptoms.
Urologists commonly evaluate conditions such as:
Benign prostatic hyperplasia, also called an enlarged prostate
Kidney stones
Urinary incontinence
Urinary tract infections
Blood in the urine
Overactive bladder
Urinary retention
Prostatitis
Prostate cancer
Bladder cancer
Kidney-related urological conditions
Certain male reproductive health concerns
Some patients need only periodic monitoring, while others require medication, diagnostic procedures, or surgical treatment.
The appropriate approach depends on the underlying condition and the patient's overall health.
Aging can influence several aspects of urinary function.
Changes in bladder capacity, pelvic muscles, prostate size, medications, and chronic health conditions may affect how the urinary system works.
However, age alone does not explain every symptom.
Some older adults notice that they need to urinate more often.
Possible contributing factors include bladder conditions, prostate enlargement, medications, diabetes, or changes in fluid intake.
Frequently waking during the night to urinate is known as nocturia.
This may interfere with sleep and increase the risk of falls when someone gets out of bed in the dark.
Some individuals experience a weak urinary stream, hesitation, or the sensation that the bladder remains full.
These symptoms deserve evaluation because they may reflect an obstruction or another medical concern.
Loss of bladder control can affect confidence, social activities, and quality of life.
Different types of urinary incontinence require different treatment approaches.
Repeated urinary tract infections may indicate an underlying issue requiring further investigation.
A urologist can help determine whether additional testing or treatment is appropriate.
Urology Associates is a regional medical practice providing urology and urogynecology services across Alabama and Mississippi.
The organization offers evaluation and treatment for a wide range of urinary conditions, including prostate enlargement, kidney stones, urinary incontinence, urinary tract infections, and certain urological cancers.
Its Bay Minette office provides scheduled specialist appointments for patients in northern Baldwin County.
The official Urology Associates website identifies David Thompson, MD, as the physician serving the Bay Minette location.
Dr. Thompson earned his medical degree from Louisiana State University in New Orleans and completed his urology residency at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, where he served as chief resident.
His published clinical interests include:
General adult urology
Endourology
Benign prostate conditions
Men's health
Endourology involves minimally invasive techniques used to evaluate and treat certain urinary tract conditions.
Patients should discuss which diagnostic procedures and treatments are appropriate for their symptoms.
One common reason older men visit a urologist is benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH.
BPH occurs when the prostate gland becomes enlarged.
The condition is not cancer, although symptoms may overlap with those caused by other medical problems.
Common symptoms include:
Frequent urination
Weak urinary stream
Difficulty starting urination
Urinary urgency
Waking during the night to urinate
Feeling unable to empty the bladder completely
Urology Associates provides evaluation and treatment for benign prostate conditions.
Its broader practice offers medical and procedural treatment options, including minimally invasive approaches for appropriately selected patients.
Specific procedures may require appointments at another Urology Associates location or an affiliated medical facility.
Kidney stones develop when minerals and other substances in urine form hard deposits.
Some stones are small enough to pass naturally.
Others can cause severe pain, urinary obstruction, bleeding, or infection.
Urology Associates identifies kidney stone care as one of its major clinical services.
Treatment may include monitoring, medication, or procedures depending on stone size, location, symptoms, and other medical factors.
The organization's broader surgical services include ureteroscopy, shock wave lithotripsy, and other stone removal approaches.
Not every procedure is performed at its Bay Minette outreach office.
Patients should confirm where recommended testing or treatment will take place.
A urologist may also assess symptoms such as persistent urinary frequency, difficulty emptying the bladder, blood in the urine, and recurrent infections.
The evaluation may involve a medical history, physical examination, urine testing, imaging, or other studies when appropriate.
The purpose is to identify the cause rather than assume all urinary problems are related to aging.
Urology Associates maintains several Alabama locations, including offices in Fairhope, Foley, Mobile, and other communities.
This regional network may provide access to additional diagnostic or treatment services when a patient's needs go beyond what can be offered during an outreach clinic visit.
Patients should ask whether follow-up appointments or procedures will require travel to another office.

Baldwin County has experienced substantial population growth in recent years.
According to U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts, the county's estimated population reached approximately 267,761 in 2025, and 23.7% of residents were age 65 or older.
This represents a significant older adult population with healthcare needs that may include urinary conditions, prostate concerns, kidney stones, and changes in bladder function.
For residents of Bay Minette and surrounding northern Baldwin County communities, access to scheduled specialty appointments can be especially valuable.
Patients living in Bay Minette, Stockton, Perdido, and nearby communities may otherwise need to travel to larger medical centers for certain specialist appointments.
Having a scheduled urology clinic within Bay Minette provides a local option for appropriate evaluations.
However, more complex testing or treatment may still require travel.
Many older adults live with more than one medical condition.
Diabetes, cardiovascular disease, neurological disorders, and certain medications may contribute to urinary symptoms.
A urologist can coordinate with primary care professionals and other specialists when appropriate.
Frequent bathroom trips, urinary leakage, or nighttime urination can interfere with everyday routines.
Some individuals begin avoiding travel or social activities because they worry about finding a restroom.
Professional evaluation may help identify treatment options and reduce the impact of these symptoms.
An enlarged prostate is one of the most common urological concerns among aging men.
The prostate surrounds part of the urethra, the tube that carries urine out of the body.
As the prostate enlarges, it may interfere with urine flow.
These include:
Difficulty beginning urination
Weak or interrupted stream
Frequent urination
Urgency
Nighttime bathroom visits
Incomplete emptying
Symptoms do not always correspond directly to prostate size.
Some people with a relatively enlarged prostate have mild symptoms, while others experience significant difficulties.
A physician may review symptoms, medications, medical history, and examination findings.
Depending on the circumstances, additional testing may include:
Urinalysis
Assessment of bladder emptying
Prostate examination
Selected blood tests
Imaging or other studies
Testing is individualized.
Mild symptoms may require monitoring and lifestyle adjustments.
Other patients may benefit from medication.
When symptoms are severe or medications are ineffective, procedural treatments may be considered.
The physician should explain potential benefits, risks, and alternatives.
Kidney stones can cause symptoms ranging from mild discomfort to severe pain.
Some individuals experience pain in the side or back, nausea, urinary symptoms, or blood in the urine.
Stones can develop when certain substances become concentrated in urine.
Risk factors may involve hydration, diet, medical history, inherited tendencies, and certain health conditions.
Persistent pain or suspected kidney stones should be discussed with a healthcare professional.
Urgent evaluation is particularly important when symptoms include:
Fever or chills
Severe uncontrolled pain
Vomiting that prevents fluid intake
Difficulty or inability to urinate
Signs of infection
A blocked urinary tract accompanied by infection can be a medical emergency.
Prevention depends on the type of stone and individual risk factors.
A healthcare professional may recommend appropriate hydration, dietary adjustments, medication, or further testing.
People with heart failure, kidney disease, or fluid restrictions should not increase fluid intake without medical guidance.
Blood in the urine is called hematuria.
It may be visible or detected through laboratory testing.
Possible causes include infection, stones, prostate conditions, medication-related bleeding, and other urinary tract disorders.
In some cases, blood in the urine can be associated with cancer.
Contact a healthcare professional when blood appears in the urine, even if there is no pain.
The provider can determine whether testing or specialist evaluation is necessary.
Patients should not assume that bleeding is harmless because it occurs only once.
Waking repeatedly to use the bathroom can affect sleep quality.
Poor sleep may contribute to fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and reduced daytime functioning.
Nighttime bathroom trips may also increase fall risk.
Nocturia can be associated with:
Enlarged prostate
Overactive bladder
Sleep disorders
Diabetes
Certain medications
Changes in fluid balance
Other medical conditions
Because several conditions can contribute, treatment should begin with identifying the likely cause.
A healthcare provider may ask patients to record:
Number of nighttime bathroom visits
Approximate fluid intake
Medication timing
Urgency or leakage
Sleep patterns
Other symptoms
This information may help guide evaluation.
A little preparation can make the appointment more productive.
Include prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and supplements.
Record when symptoms began, how often they occur, and whether they have changed.
If available, bring information about urine tests, imaging, kidney stones, prostate evaluations, or prior treatment.
Consider asking:
What could be causing my symptoms?
Which tests are necessary?
Are nonsurgical treatment options available?
Will medication help?
What side effects should I know about?
Can treatment be completed in Bay Minette?
When should I return for follow-up?
Urology Associates asks new patients to bring photo identification, their insurance card, and a current medication list.
Some insurance plans require specialist referrals.
Patients should confirm these details before their appointment.
Expert Tip: Keep a simple bladder diary for several days before your urology appointment. Record how often you urinate, nighttime bathroom visits, urgency, leakage, and relevant fluid intake. These details can help your physician identify patterns and decide which tests may be appropriate.
A short written record is often more useful than trying to remember every symptom during the appointment.
Make a list of symptoms, including urinary frequency, weak stream, discomfort, leakage, or previous kidney stone problems.
Your primary care professional can evaluate initial concerns and determine whether specialist consultation is appropriate.
Call 251-433-1895 to ask about available appointments with Dr. David Thompson.
The Bay Minette office currently lists appointments on the fourth Tuesday of each month.
Verify the exact date and time before traveling.
Ask whether your insurance plan is accepted and whether a referral is necessary.
Bring identification, insurance information, medications, and relevant medical records.
Ask whether additional tests or procedures will be performed in Bay Minette or at another Urology Associates location.
A urology evaluation may be appropriate for persistent urinary frequency, weak urine flow, recurrent urinary infections, kidney stones, blood in the urine, or bladder control problems.
Yes. Urology Associates lists a Bay Minette office at 2305 Hand Avenue. Its published schedule is the fourth Tuesday of each month.
The official website identifies David Thompson, MD, as the physician serving Bay Minette. His interests include endourology, benign prostate conditions, and men's health.
No. Some patients benefit from monitoring, lifestyle adjustments, or medication. Procedures may be considered when symptoms are severe or other treatment options are unsuitable.
Medicare Part B generally covers medically necessary specialist evaluations, subject to provider participation, plan requirements, and applicable cost-sharing. Patients with Medicare Advantage should confirm network and referral requirements.
Urinary symptoms can affect sleep, confidence, mobility, and everyday independence.
However, these concerns should not be dismissed simply because a person is getting older.
Understanding the cause of urinary changes is the first step toward identifying appropriate treatment.

For many older homeowners, a house represents more than a place to live. It may also be one of the largest financial assets accumulated over a lifetime. As retirement approaches, homeowners sometimes face a difficult balance. They want to remain in familiar surroundings but may also need to manage rising living expenses, insurance costs, home maintenance, or changes in healthcare needs. Some residents have significant home equity but relatively limited monthly cash flow.Others want to make accessibility improvements, such as installing a ramp or modifying a bathroom, without selling their property. For homeowners in Daphne, Alabama, a reverse mortgage may be one financing option worth evaluating.A reverse mortgage allows certain eligible homeowners to borrow against their home equity without making required monthly principal and interest payments while the loan remains in good standing. However, the borrowed funds must eventually be repaid, interest and charges accumulate, and borrowers must continue meeting important property-related obligations.Anchor Funding, Inc., a mortgage company serving Baldwin County and surrounding Alabama communities, provides reverse mortgage information through local representative Nicole Cramer.Understanding both the benefits and risks is essential before using home equity to support retirement goals. What Is a Reverse Mortgage?A reverse mortgage is a loan secured by a homeowner's property. It allows eligible borrowers to access part of the equity accumulated in their home. The loan differs from a traditional mortgage because borrowers generally are not required to make monthly principal and interest payments. The Home Remains CollateralThe loan is secured by the property.Ownership ContinuesThe homeowner generally retains title while meeting the agreement's requirements.Interest AccumulatesThe outstanding balance may grow as interest and financed charges are added.Repayment Is DeferredRepayment is generally triggered by certain events, such as selling the home, death, or permanently moving away.Property Responsibilities RemainBorrowers must meet ongoing requirements concerning taxes, insurance, occupancy, and maintenance. Not Free MoneyReverse mortgage proceeds represent borrowed funds rather than a government grant or unrestricted benefit.Understanding Home EquityHome equity represents the difference between a property's value and the debts secured against it.For example, a homeowner may have accumulated equity by paying down an existing mortgage or benefiting from increases in property value.Equity Is Not the Same as CashThe value is tied to the property until it is accessed through selling or financing.Borrowing Reduces Available EquityA reverse mortgage can increase debt secured by the home.Loan Proceeds Have LimitsA reverse mortgage generally does not allow homeowners to borrow the home's entire value.Several Factors MatterAvailable proceeds may depend on the youngest borrower's age, property value, existing mortgage debt, current rates, and product rules.Future Changes MatterThe amount of equity remaining later depends on home value changes, interest accumulation, and other factors.A personalized written estimate is necessary to understand a specific proposal.Anchor Funding, Inc.
