Urologists in Grove Hill, AL

Prostate health is something many men begin thinking about as they get older, particularly when they notice changes in urination or receive an unexpected result from a routine blood test.

A man may begin waking several times during the night to use the bathroom. Another may notice that his urinary stream has become weaker. Someone else may feel perfectly healthy but learn that his prostate-specific antigen, or PSA, level is elevated.

These situations can raise understandable concerns.

Does an elevated PSA mean prostate cancer? Are urinary changes simply part of aging? When should a specialist become involved?

For men and families in Grove Hill, Alabama, understanding prostate health can make these questions easier to navigate.

Urology Associates – Grove Hill provides scheduled access to specialized urological care for residents of Clarke County and surrounding southwest Alabama communities.

The Grove Hill office is served by Zachary D. Reardon, MD, and Rylan Wells, MSN, FNP-C, connecting patients with evaluation and treatment planning for prostate and other urinary tract concerns.

This guide explains prostate screening, common symptoms, potential diagnoses, and how older adults can make informed decisions about urological care.

What Is a Urologist?

A urologist is a physician specializing in conditions affecting the urinary tract and certain parts of the male reproductive system.

The urinary tract includes the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra.

In men, urologists also evaluate conditions involving the prostate and reproductive organs.

Common Reasons to See a Urologist

Patients may seek care for:

  • Enlarged prostate

  • Elevated PSA levels

  • Difficulty urinating

  • Weak urinary stream

  • Frequent nighttime urination

  • Blood in the urine

  • Kidney stones

  • Recurrent urinary tract infections

  • Bladder control problems

  • Urinary retention

  • Prostate cancer concerns

  • Other urinary or reproductive health conditions

Not every symptom indicates a serious illness.

However, persistent or unexplained changes deserve appropriate medical evaluation.

Understanding the Prostate and Its Function

The prostate is a small gland located below the bladder and surrounding part of the urethra.

It contributes fluid to semen and is part of the male reproductive system.

As men age, the prostate frequently changes in size.

These changes can affect urinary function, but not every enlarged prostate causes symptoms.

Why the Prostate Can Affect Urination

Because the urethra passes through the prostate, enlargement or inflammation may interfere with urine flow.

Patients may experience difficulty starting urination or feel that their bladder does not empty completely.

The underlying cause should be identified before treatment begins.

What Is a PSA Test?

PSA stands for prostate-specific antigen.

It is a protein produced by prostate tissue.

A PSA test measures the amount of this protein in a blood sample.

Healthcare professionals may use PSA testing as part of an individualized discussion about prostate cancer screening or when evaluating certain prostate-related concerns.

Does an Elevated PSA Mean Cancer?

No.

An elevated PSA result does not automatically mean that someone has prostate cancer.

PSA levels may increase because of several conditions, including:

  • Benign prostate enlargement

  • Prostate inflammation

  • Urinary infection

  • Certain medical procedures

  • Prostate cancer

Some temporary factors may also influence test results.

A healthcare professional considers the PSA value alongside medical history, examination findings, previous test results, and other relevant information.

Urology Associates – Grove Hill

Urology Associates is a regional medical practice providing specialized urology services across Alabama and neighboring communities.

Its broader services include prostate health, benign prostatic hyperplasia, kidney stones, urinary incontinence, urinary infections, and urological cancer evaluation.

The practice maintains a scheduled outreach clinic in Grove Hill, providing a local option for specialist consultations.

Prostate Evaluation With Zachary D. Reardon, MD

Urology Associates identifies Zachary D. Reardon, MD, as the urologist serving the Grove Hill location.

The practice lists Dr. Reardon among its physicians providing general urological care within its regional network.

For Grove Hill patients, this provides access to professional evaluation of urinary symptoms and prostate-related concerns.

A prostate assessment may involve reviewing symptoms, medical history, previous PSA results, and any additional examination or testing considered appropriate.

Care With Rylan Wells, MSN, FNP-C

The Grove Hill office also lists Rylan Wells, MSN, FNP-C, a family nurse practitioner.

Advanced practice professionals may participate in patient evaluations, follow-up care, education, and coordination of treatment within their professional scope.

Patients should confirm provider availability when scheduling.

Evaluation of Elevated PSA

An elevated PSA may require additional assessment.

Depending on the patient's circumstances, a clinician may recommend:

  • Reviewing previous PSA measurements

  • Repeating a PSA test

  • Evaluating urinary symptoms

  • Considering other medical conditions

  • Discussing additional prostate testing

  • Monitoring changes over time

  • Referral for further diagnostic procedures

The goal is to understand what a test result means for the individual rather than making conclusions from one number alone.

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia Care

Urology Associates provides evaluation and treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly called BPH.

BPH is a noncancerous enlargement of the prostate.

Depending on symptom severity, treatment may include monitoring, medication, or procedures.

The practice's broader network offers specialized treatments for prostate enlargement.

Patients should ask whether a specific procedure is available locally or must be performed at another facility.

Regional Prostate Cancer Services

Urology Associates provides services involving prostate cancer evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment planning.

Its regional resources include prostate-focused diagnostic and treatment options.

A patient with concerning findings may require additional testing or coordinated care with specialists at another location.

The appropriate plan depends on the patient's health, diagnosis, and treatment preferences.

Why Prostate Care Matters in Clarke County

Grove Hill is the county seat of Clarke County in southwest Alabama.

The community also serves residents from surrounding rural areas.

For older adults, traveling to larger medical centers can require additional time, transportation arrangements, and family assistance.

Local access to scheduled specialty consultations may help reduce some of these challenges.

An Older Population With Changing Healthcare Needs

U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts reports that approximately 23.1% of Clarke County residents are age 65 or older.

This represents a substantial proportion of the local population.

As men grow older, benign prostate enlargement becomes more common, and decisions about prostate cancer screening may become more complex.

These changes make access to reliable medical information particularly valuable.

Supporting Rural Healthcare Access

Specialty care can be more difficult to access in rural communities than in larger metropolitan areas.

For Grove Hill residents, a scheduled urology clinic creates an opportunity to discuss symptoms and concerns closer to home.

Patients should still confirm where diagnostic procedures and follow-up treatment will be performed.

Helping Families Coordinate Appointments

Some older adults rely on spouses, adult children, or other caregivers for transportation.

Because Grove Hill appointments are scheduled monthly, coordinating the visit in advance may help families avoid unnecessary travel.

Prostate Cancer Screening and Shared Decision-Making

Prostate cancer screening is not a one-size-fits-all decision.

Whether screening is appropriate depends on factors such as age, family history, general health, life expectancy, personal preferences, and individual risk.

Why Screening Decisions Require Discussion

PSA testing may help identify prostate abnormalities.

However, screening can also lead to additional testing, anxiety, and diagnosis of cancers that might never have caused symptoms.

Some treatments may have side effects that affect urinary, bowel, or sexual function.

Patients should understand both potential benefits and possible harms before choosing screening.

Factors That May Influence the Decision

These include:

  • Age

  • Family history of prostate cancer

  • Previous PSA results

  • Overall health

  • Relevant inherited risk factors

  • Personal values

  • Willingness to pursue further testing

A healthcare professional can explain how these factors apply to the individual.

Screening Versus Diagnostic Testing

Routine prostate cancer screening differs from testing performed because someone has symptoms or other concerning medical findings.

A man experiencing difficulty urinating or blood in the urine may need medical evaluation regardless of routine screening recommendations.

What Happens After an Elevated PSA Result?

Receiving an abnormal result can feel unsettling.

However, a single elevated PSA value rarely provides a complete explanation.

Reviewing Previous Results

A clinician may compare the current PSA level with earlier measurements.

Changes over time can provide useful context.

Considering Temporary Causes

Certain infections, inflammation, and other factors may influence PSA measurements.

The physician considers whether additional evaluation is necessary.

Repeating the Test

Sometimes repeating PSA testing is appropriate before deciding on further investigation.

Additional Diagnostic Evaluation

Depending on the situation, further evaluation may include imaging, risk assessment tools, or prostate biopsy.

Not every patient with an elevated PSA requires a biopsy.

Discussing Next Steps

The healthcare team should explain the reasons for recommended testing and the possible outcomes.

Patients should feel comfortable asking questions before proceeding.

Enlarged Prostate Versus Prostate Cancer

One of the most common misconceptions is that an enlarged prostate automatically indicates cancer.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostate cancer are different conditions.

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia

BPH is noncancerous enlargement of the prostate.

It often causes urinary symptoms because of pressure on the urethra.

Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer involves abnormal growth of malignant cells.

Early prostate cancer may not produce noticeable urinary symptoms.

Why Proper Evaluation Matters

Some symptoms can overlap, but they are not enough to establish a diagnosis.

Medical assessment helps determine which condition, if any, is present.

Common Urinary Symptoms Men Should Discuss

Several urinary changes deserve attention.

Weak Urinary Stream

A reduced stream may be associated with prostate enlargement or other urinary conditions.

Difficulty Starting Urination

Some patients experience hesitation before urine begins to flow.

Frequent Bathroom Visits

Urinary frequency may result from prostate problems, bladder conditions, diabetes, medications, or other factors.

Nighttime Urination

Waking repeatedly to urinate may interfere with sleep and increase fall risk.

Incomplete Bladder Emptying

Patients may feel that urine remains after using the bathroom.

Blood in the Urine

Visible blood should be medically evaluated, even if there is no pain.

Urinary Retention

Inability to urinate can become an urgent medical problem.

A person who suddenly cannot pass urine should seek prompt medical attention.

Treatment Options for Benign Prostate Enlargement

Treatment for BPH depends on symptom severity, medical findings, and patient preferences.

Monitoring

Some patients with mild symptoms may not need immediate medication or a procedure.

Their clinician may recommend follow-up and symptom monitoring.

Lifestyle Adjustments

Certain changes may help manage symptoms.

These can include reviewing evening fluid intake, discussing medication timing, and identifying bladder irritants.

Patients should not restrict necessary fluids or change prescribed medications without medical advice.

Medication

Several medications are used to manage BPH symptoms.

Some relax muscles around the prostate and bladder neck.

Others may help reduce prostate size over time.

Medication selection depends on the patient's condition and possible side effects.

Procedural Treatment

When symptoms are severe or medication is ineffective, procedures may be considered.

Urology Associates' regional services include minimally invasive and surgical options for appropriate patients.

A physician can explain which options are suitable and where they are performed.

Preparing for a Urology Appointment

Being prepared can help make a short specialist visit more productive.

Bring a Medication List

Include all prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, and supplements.

Gather Previous PSA Results

If available, bring laboratory results from previous years.

Describe Urinary Symptoms

Record:

  • How frequently you urinate

  • Number of nighttime bathroom visits

  • Any urgency or leakage

  • Difficulty starting urination

  • Weak urinary stream

  • Pain or discomfort

  • Any blood in the urine

Review Family Medical History

Tell the provider about relevant family history, particularly prostate cancer.

Prepare Questions

Consider asking:

  • What does my PSA result mean?

  • Should the test be repeated?

  • Are additional tests necessary?

  • Could prostate enlargement explain my symptoms?

  • What treatment options are available?

  • What are the risks of treatment?

  • Can follow-up be completed in Grove Hill?

  • Will I need to travel for additional procedures?

Expert Tip for Understanding PSA Results

Expert Tip: If your PSA level is elevated, bring previous test results to your appointment whenever possible. A urologist can review the current result in the context of your health history and earlier measurements rather than relying on one number.

An elevated result is a reason for informed discussion, not an automatic cancer diagnosis.

Medicare Part B generally covers medically necessary specialist evaluations, subject to applicable requirements and cost-sharing. Coverage for screening tests and additional procedures depends on the relevant Medicare rules and the patient's plan.

Take the Next Step Toward Better Prostate Health

Prostate concerns can raise difficult questions, particularly when symptoms are unfamiliar or test results are unexpected.

However, patients do not need to interpret these changes on their own.

Professional evaluation can help determine whether symptoms are related to benign prostate enlargement, another urinary condition, or a concern requiring further investigation.

For men and families in Grove Hill and Clarke County, Urology Associates – Grove Hill offers scheduled access to urological care through its regional medical practice.

Whether you have questions about PSA testing, persistent urinary symptoms, or prostate enlargement, an informed conversation with a healthcare professional can help clarify your options.

Terry, Jr., MD, a urologist whose professional interests include benign prostate conditions, men's health, kidney stones, and other urological concerns. For seniors and families in southwest Alabama, understanding the causes, warning signs, and treatment options for urinary retention can help support better bladder health. What Is Urinary Retention?Urinary retention occurs when a person cannot empty the bladder completely or cannot urinate despite having urine in the bladder. The condition may affect men and women, although certain causes are more common in one group.Urinary retention can develop suddenly or gradually over time.Acute Urinary RetentionAcute urinary retention occurs when someone suddenly becomes unable to urinate. The person may experience:Severe lower abdominal discomfortA strong urge to urinatePain or pressure around the bladderInability to pass urineIncreasing abdominal fullnessSudden inability to urinate is a medical emergency.Patients should seek immediate medical attention rather than waiting for a routine urology appointment.Chronic Urinary RetentionChronic urinary retention develops over time. Some people continue to urinate but leave a significant amount of urine in the bladder.Symptoms may be mild or develop gradually.Possible signs include:Weak urinary streamDifficulty beginning urinationFrequent bathroom visitsFeeling that the bladder remains fullUrinary leakageRepeated urinary infectionsLower abdominal discomfortWaking frequently during the nightSome individuals with chronic urinary retention experience few noticeable symptoms.A professional evaluation can help determine whether the bladder is emptying adequately. How Does the Bladder Normally Work? The bladder is a hollow muscular organ that stores urine produced by the kidneys. As the bladder fills, nerves send information to the brain. When it is appropriate to urinate, the bladder muscle contracts while muscles controlling the outlet relax. This coordinated process allows urine to pass through the urethra. If something interferes with the bladder muscle, nerves, or urinary outlet, emptying may become difficult. Why Bladder Emptying MattersIncomplete emptying can sometimes contribute to complications, including:Urinary tract infectionsBladder discomfortUrinary leakageBladder stonesPressure affecting the upper urinary tractKidney problems in certain casesThe risk depends on the cause, severity, duration, and other medical factors. Not every person with incomplete emptying develops these complications. However, persistent symptoms deserve evaluation.Common Causes of Urinary Retention in Older AdultsUrinary retention does not have one universal cause.Several medical conditions can interfere with bladder emptying.Enlarged ProstateBenign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly called BPH, is a noncancerous enlargement of the prostate. The prostate surrounds part of the urethra. As the prostate enlarges, it may restrict urinary flow.Men may experience hesitation, weak stream, incomplete emptying, or frequent urination.Bladder Muscle WeaknessThe bladder muscle must contract effectively to empty urine.Certain conditions may reduce its ability to do so.Neurological ConditionsConditions affecting nerve function can interfere with communication between the brain and bladder.Examples include selected neurological disorders, spinal conditions, and nerve damage.DiabetesLong-standing diabetes may affect nerves involved in bladder control. Some individuals develop reduced awareness of bladder fullness or difficulty emptying.Medication EffectsCertain medications can contribute to urinary retention. These may include selected antihistamines, decongestants, antidepressants, and other drugs.Patients should never stop prescribed medications without medical advice.Urinary Tract ObstructionNarrowing of the urethra, stones, or other structural problems may restrict urine flow.Pelvic Organ ProlapseIn some women, significant pelvic organ prolapse may interfere with normal bladder emptying.Recovery After SurgeryTemporary urinary retention can occur after certain surgical procedures or anesthesia.A healthcare professional can determine whether additional treatment is necessary.Urology Associates MonroevilleUrology Associates is a regional medical practice offering diagnosis and treatment for conditions involving the urinary tract and male reproductive system. The practice maintains multiple locations across Alabama and neighboring areas, including a scheduled outreach clinic in Monroeville. Its broader services include benign prostatic hyperplasia, urinary incontinence, urinary infections, kidney stones, prostate conditions, and other urological disorders.Specialized Care With William J. Terry, Jr., MDThe official Urology Associates directory identifies William J. Terry, Jr., MD, as the physician serving its Monroeville office.Dr. Terry provides general urological care and has published clinical interests involving:Benign prostate conditionsAquablation treatment for BPHKidney stonesKidney stone preventionMen's healthLow testosteroneErectile dysfunctionPeyronie's diseaseAdvanced prostate cancer careSelected prosthetic urological proceduresThese areas of practice provide access to specialized expertise for men experiencing urinary difficulties, including symptoms that may be associated with prostate enlargement.Evaluation of Bladder Emptying ProblemsPatients experiencing incomplete bladder emptying may need a detailed urological assessment.A clinician may review urinary symptoms, medications, previous infections, and medical history.Depending on the findings, tests may be recommended to determine how effectively the bladder empties.Benign Prostate Enlargement TreatmentUrology Associates provides medical and procedural treatment for BPH.The practice advertises several treatment options through its regional network. Some patients benefit from monitoring or medication.Others with significant symptoms or complications may need a procedure.Dr. Terry identifies Aquablation among his clinical interests.Aquablation is a surgical treatment option for appropriately selected patients with BPH.It is not automatically necessary for every person experiencing urinary retention.Kidney Stone and Urinary Tract CareThe practice also evaluates kidney stones and other urinary conditions. In some cases, stones or structural problems may contribute to difficulty urinating.A urologist can determine whether additional imaging or treatment is appropriate.Regional Treatment CoordinationBecause the Monroeville office operates on a monthly schedule, certain tests, procedures, or follow-up appointments may take place at another Urology Associates location.Patients should ask which services are available during Monroeville clinic days and where additional treatment will occur.Verified Monroeville Office InformationUrology Associates MonroevilleAddress: 16 Medical Center Drive, Monroeville, AL 36460Phone: 251-433-1895Website: https://www.uampa.com/Published Clinic Schedule: Third Tuesday of each month, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PMPhysician: William J. Terry, Jr., MDBecause the office operates on a limited monthly schedule, patients should call ahead to confirm the next appointment date.Anyone suddenly unable to urinate should seek emergency care rather than waiting for the outreach clinic. Why Urology Care Matters in Monroeville and Monroe CountyMonroeville serves residents throughout Monroe County and nearby rural communities in southwest Alabama.Access to specialized healthcare can be especially important for older adults who need to coordinate transportation, family assistance, and medical appointments.According to the U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts, Monroe County had an estimated population of approximately 18,965 in 2025, with 23.5% of residents age 65 or older. This means nearly one in four county residents is an older adult. As people age, conditions involving the prostate, bladder, nerves, and urinary tract may become more common.Supporting Rural Healthcare AccessSome residents of Monroe County may need to travel outside their immediate community for specialty treatment.A scheduled urology clinic in Monroeville provides an option for appropriate consultations closer to home. For individuals who require ongoing evaluations, understanding the clinic schedule can help with planning.Helping Older Adults Maintain IndependenceUrinary symptoms may interfere with travel, errands, sleep, and social activities.Someone who struggles to empty the bladder may feel uncomfortable leaving home for extended periods.Professional evaluation can help determine whether treatment may improve symptoms.Coordinating Multiple Medical ConditionsMany older adults manage conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, neurological disorders, or cardiovascular disease. Some of these conditions or their medications may influence urinary function.Coordination between the urologist and primary care provider can support safer treatment decisions.Supporting Family CaregiversRelatives may help older adults arrange appointments or organize medical information.Because Monroeville's urology clinic operates on a scheduled monthly basis, planning ahead may make transportation and follow-up easier. How Is Urinary Retention Diagnosed?A urologist begins by understanding the patient's symptoms and medical history. The evaluation may involve several steps.Reviewing SymptomsPatients may be asked:When did urinary problems begin? Is the urine stream weak?Do you strain to urinate?Does the bladder feel full afterward? How often do you urinate?Do you wake during the night?Have you experienced urinary infections?Have symptoms changed recently? These details can help determine which tests are appropriate.Medication ReviewThe physician may review prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, and supplements.Certain medications can affect bladder contraction or urinary outlet function.Physical ExaminationAn examination may help identify contributing medical conditions. For men, assessment may include prostate-related concerns. For women, the clinician may consider pelvic support conditions when appropriate.Post-Void Residual TestingA post-void residual test measures how much urine remains in the bladder after urination. This may be assessed using ultrasound or another appropriate method. The result can help determine whether incomplete emptying is present.UrinalysisA urine test may identify signs of infection, blood, or other abnormalities.Additional TestingDepending on the findings, further assessment may involve:Kidney function testingImagingCystoscopyUrodynamic testingOther appropriate studiesNot every patient needs every test.Understanding Treatment Options for Urinary RetentionTreatment depends on whether the condition is acute or chronic and what is causing it.Immediate Bladder DrainageWhen someone has acute urinary retention, urgent bladder drainage is often necessary.A healthcare professional may place a urinary catheter to allow urine to drain. The underlying cause must also be evaluated.Medication ManagementSome patients with prostate-related urinary obstruction benefit from prescription medications.Different medications act in different ways.A physician determines whether treatment is appropriate based on symptoms and medical findings.Addressing Medication-Related CausesIf a medication contributes to urinary retention, the prescribing professional may consider alternatives or adjustments.Patients should not independently stop important medications.Treating Urinary ObstructionA structural blockage may require a specialized procedure.Treatment depends on the location and cause of the obstruction.Managing Bladder Muscle DysfunctionSome individuals have difficulty emptying because the bladder muscle does not contract effectively. These patients may require specific management strategies and ongoing monitoring.Catheter-Based ManagementSelected patients may need intermittent catheterization or another bladder drainage method.A healthcare professional can explain the benefits, risks, training requirements, and appropriate follow-up.Enlarged Prostate and Urinary RetentionBPH is a common contributor to urinary difficulties among older men. However, not every man with prostate enlargement develops urinary retention.Common BPH SymptomsThese may include:Weak urinary streamDifficulty starting urinationFrequent bathroom visitsUrinary urgencyNighttime urinationIncomplete bladder emptyingMonitoring Mild SymptomsSome men with mild symptoms may benefit from regular follow-up rather than immediate procedures.Medical TreatmentPrescription medications may improve urine flow or address prostate enlargement.Procedural OptionsPatients with persistent symptoms, complications, or insufficient improvement may be candidates for specialized procedures.Urology Associates' broader treatment options include Aquablation and other therapies for BPH.A physician can explain eligibility, recovery expectations, and potential complications.Urinary Retention in WomenAlthough urinary retention is often associated with prostate enlargement, women can experience it as well.Possible causes include:Pelvic organ prolapseCertain medicationsNeurological disordersBladder muscle dysfunctionUrethral obstructionComplications after selected proceduresTreatment depends on the cause.Women experiencing persistent difficulty emptying their bladder should seek medical evaluation rather than assuming the symptoms are temporary. The Connection Between Urinary Retention and UTIsWhen the bladder does not empty properly, urine may remain inside longer than expected. In certain circumstances, this can contribute to repeated urinary infections. However, urinary symptoms do not always indicate bacterial infection.Avoiding Unnecessary AntibioticsA positive urine test without symptoms does not automatically require antibiotics in most older adults.A healthcare professional should determine whether treatment is appropriate.Addressing the Underlying CauseIf incomplete bladder emptying contributes to infections, treating only the infection may not resolve the larger problem.A urologist may evaluate whether bladder function or urinary obstruction needs attention. When Urinary Symptoms Require Urgent Medical AttentionCertain symptoms should not wait for a scheduled specialist visit.Seek Immediate Care for:Sudden inability to urinateSevere lower abdominal pain with urinary retentionFever and chills with suspected urinary obstructionSevere flank pain with signs of infectionSerious illness associated with urinary symptomsUntreated acute urinary retention may cause significant discomfort and complications.A scheduled monthly clinic is not an appropriate substitute for emergency care.Everyday Habits That May Support Bladder HealthDaily habits may help some patients manage urinary symptoms, although they cannot correct every cause of urinary retention.Review Fluid IntakeDrink appropriate amounts based on individual medical needs.Patients with kidney disease, heart failure, or fluid restrictions should follow their healthcare provider's advice.Avoid Unnecessary StrainingPersistent straining to urinate may indicate an underlying problem.Discuss this symptom with a healthcare professional.Review MedicationsAsk whether any prescribed or over-the-counter medications could influence urinary function.Monitor Symptom ChangesPay attention to changes in urinary stream, frequency, discomfort, or bladder emptying.Manage Chronic ConditionsAppropriate treatment of diabetes and other medical conditions may support urinary health.Preparing for Your Urology AppointmentA little preparation can make a specialist appointment more productive.Bring a Complete Medication ListInclude prescription medications, over-the-counter products, vitamins, and supplements.Record Your SymptomsWrite down:Frequency of urinationDifficulty startingWeak urinary streamNighttime bathroom visitsSensation of incomplete emptyingLeakage episodesPrevious urinary infectionsAny related painGather Previous Test ResultsBring relevant laboratory reports, imaging, and previous urology records when available.Prepare QuestionsConsider asking:Am I emptying my bladder completely? What could be causing my symptoms?Do I need a post-void residual test?Could medications contribute? Is prostate enlargement involved? What treatments are available?Would a procedure be necessary? What happens if retention continues? Can follow-up care be completed in Monroeville?Expert Tip for Recognizing Bladder Emptying ProblemsExpert Tip: If you frequently feel that your bladder is still full after urinating, mention it to your healthcare provider. A simple description of the symptom, along with information about urinary frequency and stream strength, can help determine whether bladder-emptying tests are appropriate.Do not wait for the problem to become severe before seeking advice. How to Get Started With Urology Care in MonroevilleStep 1: Identify Your SymptomsWrite down urinary difficulties, when they began, and whether they have changed.Step 2: Speak With Your Primary Care ProviderA primary care professional can evaluate initial concerns and recommend specialist consultation.Step 3: Contact Urology Associates MonroevilleCall 251-433-1895 to discuss appointment availability.Step 4: Confirm the Monthly Clinic ScheduleThe Monroeville office lists appointments on the third Tuesday of each month.Verify the next available date before traveling.Step 5: Review Insurance RequirementsAsk whether your insurance plan requires a referral or authorization.Step 6: Bring Medical RecordsPrepare identification, insurance information, medications, and relevant test results.Step 7: Discuss Follow-Up CareAsk whether additional testing or procedures will require travel to another Urology Associates location.Frequently Asked Questions About Urinary Retention1. Men's Health and Low Testosterone Care in Mobile, AL

Men's Health and Low Testosterone Care in Mobile, ALFeeling tired after a busy day is common, but persistent fatigue, reduced physical strength, and changes in sexual health can sometimes leave older men wondering whether something more is happening.A man who previously enjoyed walking, working in the yard, or exercising may notice that his energy has declined. Another may experience changes in sexual interest, difficulty maintaining erections, or reduced muscle strength. For older adults in Mobile, Alabama, these concerns can affect confidence, relationships, and everyday quality of life.Although testosterone levels naturally change with age, not every symptom of fatigue or reduced energy is caused by low testosterone.Diabetes, sleep disorders, medication effects, cardiovascular disease, depression, and other medical conditions can produce similar symptoms. That is why professional evaluation is important before considering hormone treatment.Urology Associates Mobile at Springhill provides specialized urological and men's health services for residents throughout Mobile County. The practice offers evaluation and treatment for low testosterone, erectile dysfunction, prostate conditions, and other concerns affecting men's urinary and reproductive health. Its Springhill office includes experienced urologists and advanced practice providers who help patients understand their symptoms and explore appropriate treatment options. For men and families in Mobile, learning about testosterone health can make it easier to recognize when specialist care may be helpful. What Is a Urologist?A urologist is a physician specializing in conditions affecting the urinary tract and certain parts of the male reproductive system. The urinary tract includes the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra.Urologists also evaluate conditions involving the prostate, testicles, and male sexual function.Common Reasons Men Visit a UrologistThese may include:Low testosterone symptomsErectile dysfunctionEnlarged prostateUrinary frequencyDifficulty emptying the bladderKidney stonesUrinary tract infectionsBlood in the urineProstate cancer concernsOther reproductive or urinary health conditionsSome patients require diagnostic testing or ongoing monitoring.Others may benefit from medication, lifestyle changes, or specialized procedures. The appropriate treatment depends on the diagnosis, medical history, and personal goals.Understanding Testosterone and Men's HealthTestosterone is a hormone produced primarily by the testicles. It plays a role in several important body functions. These include:Sexual interestSperm productionMuscle developmentBone healthRed blood cell productionCertain aspects of physical well-beingTestosterone levels usually vary throughout the day. They also tend to decline gradually as men grow older. However, a lower testosterone level does not automatically mean that treatment is necessary.A diagnosis of testosterone deficiency generally requires compatible symptoms and consistently low blood testosterone levels. What Is Low Testosterone?Low testosterone, also called male hypogonadism when diagnostic criteria are met, occurs when the body does not produce sufficient testosterone. There are several possible causes. Some involve conditions affecting the testicles, while others involve the pituitary gland or hormonal signaling.Testosterone levels can also be influenced by obesity, chronic illness, medications, sleep problems, and other factors.Common Symptoms of Low TestosteroneSymptoms may include:Reduced sexual interestErectile difficultiesDecreased spontaneous erectionsReduced muscle massIncreased body fatLow energyReduced motivationChanges in moodDecreased body hairBreast tissue enlargementReduced bone densityThese symptoms are not specific to testosterone deficiency.A medical evaluation is necessary to determine whether hormone levels are contributing. Why Testosterone Levels May Change With AgeHormone production can change gradually over time. However, chronological age is only one factor.Chronic Medical ConditionsConditions such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and certain chronic illnesses may be associated with reduced testosterone levels.Medication EffectsSome medications can affect hormone production.Examples include certain opioid medications and long-term use of specific hormonal treatments.Patients should not discontinue prescribed medications without medical guidance.Sleep DisordersPoor sleep and certain sleep disorders may influence hormone regulation and overall well-being.Changes in Body CompositionIncreased body fat and reduced physical activity may affect testosterone levels.Hormonal DisordersSome men have conditions involving the testicles or the brain's hormone-regulating systems. These concerns may require additional laboratory evaluation.Urology Associates Mobile at SpringhillUrology Associates is a regional medical practice providing urology, men's health, and related specialty services in Alabama and Mississippi. The organization's Springhill office is located on Memorial Hospital Drive in Mobile. The practice offers evaluation and treatment for low testosterone, erectile dysfunction, prostate conditions, urinary disorders, and other urological concerns. Its broader men's health services include diagnostic testing, medication management, and selected procedures.Physicians at the Springhill OfficeThe official location directory identifies the following urologists:Robert L. communities.Older men may experience overlapping concerns involving cardiovascular health, diabetes, urinary symptoms, prostate conditions, and sexual function.Access to specialty urological services can help patients understand which symptoms require further testing.Supporting Healthy AgingAs men age, maintaining mobility, energy, and overall health becomes increasingly important. However, not every symptom can be attributed to hormone levels.A comprehensive medical assessment can help identify contributing conditions that may otherwise go untreated.Addressing Sensitive Health ConcernsSome men hesitate to discuss sexual health or hormone-related symptoms.Concerns about embarrassment may lead patients to delay an appointment.Professional urology services provide an opportunity for confidential medical conversations and evidence-based treatment planning.Coordinating Care for Chronic ConditionsMen with diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, or other chronic conditions may benefit from coordination between their primary care provider and urologist. This is particularly important before beginning treatments that may affect other aspects of health.Convenient Access to Specialty CareThe Springhill office is located within Mobile's established medical community. For residents of Mobile County, a local specialist location may make consultations and follow-up appointments more manageable. How Is Low Testosterone Diagnosed?Diagnosing testosterone deficiency involves more than checking one blood test.Reviewing SymptomsThe physician begins by discussing symptoms and medical history.Certain symptoms, such as reduced sexual interest and fewer spontaneous erections, may be more directly associated with testosterone deficiency than general fatigue alone.Measuring Testosterone LevelsClinicians generally use morning blood tests to assess testosterone.Because levels fluctuate, a low result is usually confirmed with a separate morning measurement.Reviewing Other Medical ConditionsSymptoms may be associated with thyroid disorders, diabetes, sleep problems, anemia, depression, or medication effects.Additional testing may be recommended when appropriate.Evaluating Hormonal CausesSome patients need further laboratory studies to help determine why testosterone levels are low. This may include tests involving hormones that regulate testosterone production.Developing an Individualized PlanA diagnosis should account for symptoms, repeated test results, overall health, and treatment goals.Testosterone Replacement Therapy and Important Safety ConsiderationsTestosterone replacement therapy may help appropriately diagnosed men with clinically significant testosterone deficiency. However, it is not recommended simply to reverse normal aging or improve general energy in every older man.The decision requires careful medical assessment.Potential BenefitsFor eligible patients, testosterone treatment may improve certain symptoms of hormone deficiency, particularly sexual symptoms.Other potential effects vary among individuals.Possible Risks and Side EffectsTreatment may affect:Red blood cell levelsFertility and sperm productionCertain prostate-related monitoring needsSleep apnea or other medical conditionsFluid retentionOther aspects of healthA physician should review relevant cardiovascular history and other potential risks.Fertility ConsiderationsTestosterone replacement can suppress sperm production.Men who want to preserve fertility should discuss this before starting therapy.Monitoring During TreatmentFollow-up may include:Symptom assessmentTestosterone testingBlood count monitoringEvaluation of side effectsProstate-related monitoring when appropriateReview of overall treatment responsePatients should not obtain testosterone products without an appropriate prescription and monitoring plan.Low Testosterone and Erectile Dysfunction Are Not the Same ConditionAlthough the two concerns sometimes overlap, they are not interchangeable.Low testosterone may contribute to reduced sexual interest or certain erectile difficulties. However, erectile dysfunction can also result from blood vessel disease, diabetes, neurological conditions, medication effects, and psychological factors. Why Diagnosis MattersA man with erectile dysfunction does not necessarily have low testosterone.Likewise, a man with low testosterone may not experience erectile dysfunction.Treatment should reflect the underlying condition.Cardiovascular HealthErectile dysfunction can sometimes be associated with vascular disease.Patients should discuss cardiovascular risk factors, especially when they have diabetes, high blood pressure, or other related conditions.Medication ReviewSome medications may affect sexual function.A healthcare professional can review possible contributions without compromising treatment for important medical conditions.Everyday Habits That Support Men's HealthLifestyle changes may support overall health and are sometimes included in treatment planning.Maintain Regular Physical ActivityAppropriate exercise supports muscle strength, cardiovascular health, and mobility.Older adults should choose activities suitable for their medical conditions.Prioritize SleepAdequate sleep contributes to overall health and hormone regulation.Persistent sleep problems should be discussed with a healthcare professional.Manage Chronic ConditionsGood diabetes and blood pressure management may help support overall health and sexual function.Review NutritionA balanced diet can support energy, muscle health, and weight management.Patients with complex medical conditions may benefit from individualized dietary guidance.Avoid TobaccoSmoking increases the risk of several health conditions, including cardiovascular and vascular problems.Discuss Alcohol ConsumptionExcessive alcohol use may influence overall health and sexual function. When Should Men Consider a Urology Appointment?A professional evaluation may be appropriate when symptoms become persistent or affect everyday life.Examples include:Significant reduction in sexual interestPersistent erectile difficultiesUnexplained loss of muscle massSymptoms suggesting testosterone deficiencyOngoing urinary changesConcerns about prostate healthPersistent genital discomfortOther reproductive health concernsSudden severe pain, inability to urinate, chest pain, or other potentially serious symptoms may require urgent medical attention.Preparing for a Men's Health ConsultationBefore an appointment, patients can gather information that may help the physician understand the situation.Record SymptomsWrite down when symptoms began and whether they are worsening.Bring a Medication ListInclude prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, and supplements.Review Relevant Medical HistoryMention diabetes, cardiovascular disease, sleep apnea, prostate conditions, and previous hormonal treatment.Bring Previous Laboratory ResultsExisting testosterone measurements or other relevant results may be useful.Prepare QuestionsConsider asking:Could low testosterone explain my symptoms?Which tests should I have?Do testosterone levels need to be checked more than once? Are other medical conditions contributing?Would lifestyle changes help?Am I a candidate for treatment? What are the risks of testosterone therapy? How will my health be monitored? What alternatives are available?Expert Tip for Men's Health After 60Expert Tip: Do not assume that fatigue, reduced strength, or erectile difficulties automatically mean your testosterone is low. Ask your healthcare provider for a comprehensive evaluation that considers hormone levels, medications, sleep, cardiovascular health, and other possible causes. The right diagnosis is more important than starting treatment quickly. How to Get Started With Urology Care in MobileStep 1: Identify Your ConcernsWrite down symptoms involving energy, sexual health, urinary function, or other changes.Step 2: Speak With Your Primary Care ProviderA primary care professional can review general health and determine whether specialized evaluation is appropriate.Step 3: Contact Urology Associates SpringhillCall 251-433-1895 to discuss appointment availability.Step 4: Ask About Men's Health ServicesExplain whether the concern involves low testosterone, erectile dysfunction, or another urological problem.Step 5: Confirm Insurance RequirementsAsk whether your plan requires a referral and whether specific laboratory tests or treatments are covered.Step 6: Prepare Medical RecordsBring identification, insurance information, medication lists, and available laboratory results.Step 7: Discuss Treatment and MonitoringIf therapy is recommended, ask about possible benefits, risks, follow-up testing, and costs.Frequently Asked Questions About Men's Health and Low Testosterone1.
