I recall when the world COVID journey started, our Medical Director said we could be in COVID-mode for the next two years. What? I thought to myself, please dont say that out loud. Dont send it out into the universe! Deep down, I knew she was right. I also knew COVID would become part of the health care fabric of diseases we need to manage and treat for the older adults we serve.As we have walked the COVID journey, we saw our residents, staff, and families become strong and then stronger. Their resiliency and dogged determination were an inspiration. Everyone was in the trench fighting together. Then the light came at the end of the tunnel. vaccines. What a blessing.As the COVID positive numbers declined, so did everyones energy. Their enthusiasm for the fight had waned. People were tired. Residents. Staff. Families. They were emotionally worn out. Our resiliency meter was low. Some had experienced trauma. COVID has brought trauma.According to the National Council for Behavioral Health, 70% of adults have experienced some kind of traumatic event. COVID is not even in this equation, yet.For those of us in senior care, there is a high likelihood that many of our residents and staff could be affected by trauma. Would it be safe to say, we should approach each thinking there may be a response from something that occurred in their life? We think so. We think COVID has added to our mental health and resiliency, and not always in the best way.Should we become a Trauma-Informed organization? We answered with a resounding, YES! When people with Diabetes, Heart Failure, COPD, or other chronic conditions return home after a hospital stay, it can be an uncertain time. It may be difficult for them to manage their condition on their own, and they may end up being readmitted to the hospital within a few weeks or months. Most would prefer to remain at home in the comfort of family, friends, and familiar surroundings, instead of having to go back to the hospital. And rehospitalization is quite costly.If you need home care services when you return from the hospital, look for a company that is committed to keeping patients with chronic conditions safe at home, and out of the hospital. You may need a comprehensive range of home health care services, including skilled nursing, therapy (physical, occupational, or speech), or home health aide or social work services. Be sure to enlist a company that works closely with hospital discharge planners, follows up with you after your discharge from the hospital, monitors your condition, and acts as a liaison between you and your primary care physician. Enlist a company that teaches techniques and methods to help you self-manage many aspects of your condition, and helps identify what you can do on an ongoing basis to improve your own health. Be sure you know what the signs and symptoms are when your condition may be worsening and when you may need to call your physician or your home health care company. By working with your home care company and taking charge of your own care, you can achieve the best possible health and highest possible level of independence. By managing your own chronic condition, a crisis can often be avoided, and you will be able to remain safely at home, where you want to be. The Larimer County Office on Aging, which is located in the Department of Human Services, is the Area Agency on Aging (AAA) for Larimer County. As one of sixteen AAA's in Colorado, the Office on Aging receives funding from the Federal Older Americans Act and the Older Coloradans Fund to provide services to Larimer County residents who are 60 and older, and to serve as the lead agency for planning and coordinating those services. I have just spent the last two months as the interim manager of an independent living. My take away from that time is still on my mind.Residents at my facility had been in the building for either a few months or up to 14 years. Each of their apartments was decorated as uniquely as they are. Some spent quite a bit of time and talent in displaying their statement at the front doors of their apartments. I have gone over and back in my mind what will my statement be? The most fun that I had was spent with the residents. They are current and engaged. There is a dichotomy in their passion for the world. They are worried about the changes they see. Yet, celebrate the progress and the swiftness in which the world now operates.The feeling that has settled into my soul is the community the residents have made for each other. If you are a new resident they want you to know how it all works so that you can be a happy and engaged member of your new world. Cards are sent to residents who are not feeling well. Prayers are said for those who would benefit from more support.Joking and laughter are the order of the day. At the monthly birthday celebration, a resident told me that she had decided to get dressed up put on her half girdle! A resident checked us out by staying in a guest apartment. She was waiting for our van to take a group to the grocery store. She asked if I thought she could handle shopping for herself. She stated she had not shopped for herself in two years. I encouraged her to give it a try!Later on, I saw her pushing the grocery cart having put her own groceries away she had purchased. The smile on her face and the sense of pride in being able to do more for her (at 92!) was exhilarating for both of us to witness. She is now working out the details to join in the community of independent living.I truly believe that we extend the life of those who are in the 80s and 90s by the amenities, lifestyle, companionship, and camaraderie offered in the amazing world of independent living. Who would have ever thought a bank certificate of deposit would merit an entire article they are common as an old shoe, a bank product that a lot of retired folks have used for generations. Generally the only question to discuss is what's the rate?  But there's a newer generation of FDIC insured bank CDs to consider; the variable rate, market linked CDs. These are issued by federally charted U.S. banks and, have the same FDIC protection, but with a new twist we don't know the yield from year to year. That yield will never be negative (you cant lose money), but could be as low as zero for a given year and then in other years be in the 4 to 7% range.For example, at the time of this printing the most recent declared yield was for the CD that had an anniversary on February 2013 - it paid a one year yield of 3.32%, and one year ago (Feb.2012) that same CD paid 5.78%. The average yield paid for the 12 months of 2012 was 3.21% . Finally some attractive FDIC insured yields!I'm thrilled with this alternative said Steve a Fort Collins resident and retired forester. I've used CDs for years, but when my last group of certificates matured the bank offered me 0.5%. Obviously the banks don't want my money these days. The interest earned is paid out each year and generally cant be compounded into the existing CD.
