Each year, millions of older adults fall victim to fraud or scams. With the increased isolation experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic, scammers have become even more creative. Learn about the latest scams, how dementia can increase vulnerability, what to do if you suspect fraud, and available resources. Elder financial abuse is big business. It is believed that financial fraud occurs every 15 seconds. According to the AARP Public Policy Institute, 1 in 5 older Americans are victims of financial exploitation each year. And, while the scammers are getting sneakier, it is not always a stranger that is the perpetrator. According to a 2019 report, the greatest losses related to elder fraud are at the hands of a fiduciary - someone who is trusted to act on behalf of another individual.
