The NIH estimates that one in three people between 65 and 74 has hearing loss. Nearly half of those over 75 have difficulty hearing. “With hearing loss being so gradual over time, it's a lot easier to turn the volume up on things and make things a little bit louder or ask for repetition. But people pick up on that and then you're doing yourself a disservice from not being able to fully communicate and express and understand people well,” said Audiologist Dr. Haley Connolly. Adults typically wait 7-10 years after noticing hearing problems before seeking help. “People start to isolate at home. They don't want to do group activities. They want to stay at home in their safe zone,” said Dr. Connolly. Dr. Connolly everyone should take a hearing test. “Because you don't know what you're not hearing until we come in and we do the full assessment. We look at things that are not just hearing loss, but also your middle ear health and how reactive your ear is to impulse noise.” If hearing loss is discovered, hearing aids can help. “Even small sounds around the house, the microwave going off, the dishes rattling those are so good for your brain to have access to and keep stimulated so that when you do get into more complex environment, things are loud background noise from the front in the back, the brain can handle that much better because it's used to the hearing aids even at home,” said Dr. Connolly. “When you're more active in the conversation, you're able to hear at the dinner table, hear your grandkids.
