Remember that trip you’ve been putting off since your diagnosis? The family reunion you said “maybe next year” to? The destination that’s been in your heart but felt just out of reach?

This could be the year you finally go.

January isn’t just about gym memberships and diet plans. For seniors and their families, it’s the ideal time to plan accessible travel, especially when mobility or health concerns are a factor.

Why January is Your Strategic Advantage

While most travelers book trips last-minute or during peak season, savvy seniors know that January planning offers distinct advantages that make accessible travel smoother, safer, and more affordable.

Travel Companion Availability
Professional travel companions book up quickly, especially during popular travel periods like spring break, summer vacations, and the holidays. By planning in January, you secure first choice of experienced companions who can match your specific needs, whether that’s medical expertise, dementia care training, or simply someone who shares your sense of humor.

Better Flight Options and Pricing
Airlines release their schedules and sales early in the year. This means more direct flights, better seat selections (crucial for those needing aisle access or extra legroom), and the ability to request special accommodations well in advance. Wheelchair services, oxygen approval, and dietary requirements all benefit from early coordination.

Time for Medical Clearance
If you haven’t traveled since a health event, your doctor may want to assess your readiness and provide travel clearance. January planning gives you time to address any concerns, adjust medications for different time zones, and ensure you’re physically prepared for your journey.

Reduced Stress for Everyone
Nothing creates family anxiety like rushed travel arrangements for a loved one with mobility limitations. Early planning means everyone (from you to your adult children to your travel companion) has time to prepare, ask questions, and feel confident about the journey ahead.

Setting Realistic (and Achievable) Travel Goals for 2026

The key to successful accessible travel isn’t lowering your expectations. It’s matching your destination and timing to your current abilities while having the right support in place.

Start with Your “Why”
Are you traveling to see grandchildren? Attend a wedding? Visit a lifelong friend? Experience a place you’ve always dreamed of? Your motivation matters because it helps determine what accommodations are worth making and what trade-offs you’re willing to accept.

Consider the Season
If you use a walker or wheelchair, icy winter destinations may present challenges. If heat affects your condition, summer in Arizona might not be ideal. January gives you the luxury of choosing optimal travel windows for your specific situation.

Think Beyond the Flight
The journey doesn’t end at baggage claim. Consider what happens between the airport and your final destination. Will you need ground transportation assistance? Hotel room modifications? Help navigating unfamiliar places? Professional travel companions handle these details so you can focus on enjoying your trip.

Common Concerns (and Why They Shouldn’t Stop You)

“What if I have a medical emergency while traveling?”
Travel companions are trained to handle medical situations and coordinate with healthcare providers wherever you are.

“I don’t want to burden my family.”
Having professional assistance often gives families more quality time together because they’re not worried about logistics.

“It’s too expensive.”
When you factor in the cost of family members taking time off work, potential complications from traveling alone, and peace of mind, professional travel assistance is often more affordable than families realize.

“I’m not sure I’m ready.”
That’s exactly why January planning is perfect. You have time to build confidence, improve strength, and prepare mentally and physically.

Your 2026 Starts Now

The difference between “someday” and “this year” often comes down to taking one small step. Not booking the entire trip today, just starting the conversation.

This January, give yourself permission to dream about where you want to go. Then let GOMO Travel show you how to get there safely, comfortably, and with dignity.

Whether it’s a cross-country family visit, a bucket-list destination, or simply the confidence to travel independently again, 2026 can be your year of fearless travel, no matter your age or ability.

exceptional experiences around the table, but I wanted to contribute even more to daily life here.  My goal is simple: every resident should wake up each morning with something exciting to look forward to.That philosophy is reflected in every square of The Glenviews bustling Activities Calendar. A Calendar Packed with PossibilityRachels vision is ambitious: create enough variety that every Rachel is also working with yoga instructor Marjorie to launch a Senior Salsa class and continues partnering with the resident-led Lifestyle Committee to bring new ideas to life. The best ideas often come from residents, said Rachel.  When people share their passions, we can create even more opportunities for connection and fun.Resident Judy Johansen agrees.  Rachels enthusiasm is contagious, said Judy.  She creates opportunities for everyone to get involved, make friends, and try something new.  Theres always something exciting on the horizon here. For Executive Director Daniel Gomez, Rachels I Only Wish Id Moved Sooner: Jeanne Findlaters Glenview Story

For Jeanne Findlater, moving to The Glenview at Pelican Bay wasnt just a change of address it was a discovery. I wish Id done it years ago, she said. I simply didnt realize what this lifestyle could offer.Jeanne knows a thing or two about recognizing exceptional opportunities. In 1979, she made history as the first woman in the country to lead a television station in a Top 10 market, when ABC appointed her Vice President and General Manager of WXYZ-TV in Detroit. Today, the Michigan Journalism Hall of Fame member, says one of the best decisions shes ever made was choosing The Glenview. I love having my own home and my privacy, Jeanne said. But I also love knowing that everything is taken care of. I dont worry about maintenance, repairs, or the little things anymore. Its incredibly freeing. The Freedom to Enjoy Every DayMost afternoons, Jeanne relaxes with a glass of wine, a mystery novel, and sweeping views of the Gulf before heading to dinner in The Glenviews elegant dining room. When shes ready to be social, all she has to do is open her front door. Its like living in a beautiful boutique hotel, Jeanne said. There are concerts, lectures, fitness classes, bridge, mahjongg, and wonderful people everywhere. It all comes together to create a very rich life.An Unmatched LocationFor Jeanne, The Glenviews location is equally extraordinary. Theres nothing else like it, she said. Were surrounded by the beauty of Pelican Bays protected mangroves, and I can take the complimentary tram to the beach whenever I want, enjoy lunch by the Gulf, then walk to waterside shops, the Artis Naples Performing Arts Center, or the Baker Museum. Everything is right here.A Home Thats Truly Her OwnJeanne also appreciates that residents own their homes, allowing her to create a space thats uniquely hers. I opened up my kitchen, added granite, and created a home thats perfect for entertaining, she said. It feels exactly the way I wanted it to.The Difference is the PeopleAbove all, Jeanne says its the people who make The Glenview exceptional. The staff is extraordinary, she said. Theyre caring, thoughtful, and always looking out for us. You feel supported every single day.Looking back, Jeanne has only one regret. I waited too long, she said. Life here is everything I hoped retirement could be.
