Browse NowWhen people hear the word dementia, they often picture it as something that happens only in the later years of life. But the truth is, dementia can affect much younger adults as well. When the condition appears before the age of 65, it is called early-onset dementia (also known as young-onset dementia). This is different from the early stage of dementia that typically occurs in older adultsit refers specifically to age at diagnosis, not disease progression. While still relatively uncommon, early-onset dementia is on the rise, and it can be devastating for families. People may be in the prime of their careers, raising children, or even caring for their own aging parents when the symptoms begin to surface. Understanding this condition, spotting the signs, and knowing what support is available can make a world of difference. How Common Is Early-Onset Dementia? The number of people diagnosed with dementia before age 65 has grown dramatically in recent decades. In fact, research from Blue Cross Blue Shield found that between 2013 and 2017, cases of early-onset dementia increased sharply: Ages 3044: up 373% Ages 4554: up 311% Ages 5564: up 143% Even more striking, according to Massachusetts General Hospital, early-onset dementia is now being diagnosed in people as young as 30 years old. While researchers are still trying to understand why the numbers are climbing so quickly, what we do know is that this condition is becoming an urgent public health issue.Who Is Most at Risk?Anyone can develop dementia, but certain factors appear to raise the risk of developing it at a younger age. A large study published by Harvard Health identified several contributors, including: Genetics: Specific hereditary factors can increase susceptibility. Alcohol misuse: Long-term heavy drinking is linked with cognitive decline. Social isolation: Spending too much time alone can negatively affect brain health. Vitamin D deficiency: Low levels are associated with cognitive impairment. Hearing loss: Untreated hearing issues are now considered a significant risk factor. Cardiovascular conditions: Previous stroke or heart disease raise the risk. Diabetes (in men): Men with diabetes are more likely to develop dementia earlier. Other possible risks include chronic depression, high blood pressure, and lower levels of education. Its important to remember that having one or more of these factors does not guarantee dementiabut being aware of them can help with prevention and early detection.Recognizing the Early SignsSpotting early-onset dementia can be tricky. For adults in their 30s, 40s, or 50s, the symptoms may initially look like stress, burnout, or even depression. Because people at this age are often managing careers, raising children, and balancing multiple responsibilities, its easy to dismiss the changes as just life. Here are some signs worth paying attention to: Memory problems that disrupt daily life: Repeatedly forgetting appointments, relying heavily on reminders, or asking for the same information again and again. Difficulty solving problems: Trouble following a recipe or managing household finances. Challenges with routine tasks: Struggling to drive to familiar places or forgetting how to play favorite games. Disorientation: Losing track of dates, seasons, or where they are. Language difficulties: Repeating phrases, having trouble following conversations, or searching for the right word. Poor judgment: Making questionable decisions about money, personal safety, or self-care. Personality and mood changes: Becoming anxious, suspicious, withdrawn, or unusually irritable. If you or someone you love is experiencing these symptoms, dont waitschedule an evaluation with a healthcare provider. Early diagnosis allows families to make informed decisions and access the right resources sooner.Life After a DiagnosisHearing the words you have dementia at a younger age can feel overwhelming. People in this age group are often still in the workforce, paying mortgages, or raising children. The ripple effect of the diagnosis impacts not only the individual but also their spouse, children, and extended family.Taking proactive steps early on can help: Plan ahead. Review legal and financial matters while the person can still actively participate. This includes updating wills, assigning powers of attorney, and discussing long-term care preferences. Stay engaged. Physical activity, mental exercises, and social interactions may help slow progression and enhance quality of life. Seek support. Join support groups, connect with dementia-friendly resources, and lean on family and friends. Explore treatment options. While no cure exists, medications and therapies can manage symptoms and support daily function. Prioritize overall health. Managing other conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and depression is vital. Building a Network of SupportThe journey with early-onset dementia is not one to walk alone. Fortunately, there are organizations and community resources designed to help. The Alzheimers Association offers dedicated resources and support groups tailored for younger individuals with dementia and their families. Area Agencies on Aging can connect families with local programs and assistance. Employers may provide workplace accommodations or resources for employees facing cognitive challenges. No two people experience dementia the same way. Some maintain independence for many years, while others need more support earlier on. The key is to seek out resources and build a network of care. How Right at Home Grand Junction Can HelpAt Right at Home Grand Junction, we understand the unique challenges of early-onset dementia. Homemaking and Housekeeping Support That Helps Seniors Stay Independent in Grand Junction, COA clean kitchen, fresh laundry, and clear walkways may seem like ordinary details. For an older adult, however, those details can determine whether home still feels manageable. In Grand Junction, many seniors want to remain close to familiar neighborhoods, medical providers, churches, friends, and family traditions. They may still enjoy downtown outings or time with grandchildren, yet find that vacuuming, changing linens, carrying groceries, or keeping up with dishes requires more energy than it once did. That is where homemaking and light housekeeping support can help. Rather than taking over a persons home, the right assistance protects energy, reduces everyday hazards, and allows the older adult to remain involved in routines that matter.Homemaking Is About More Than a Tidy HouseHomemaking services assist with routine household tasks that have become tiring, difficult, or unsafe. Right at Home Grand Junction includes light housekeeping and grocery shopping within its companion care services, along with non-medical support that helps clients live comfortably at home. A homemaking visit may include: Washing dishes and wiping kitchen surfaces Light vacuuming, sweeping, and dusting Laundry and changing bed linens Organizing frequently used items Taking out the trash Preparing simple meals Shopping for groceries or essentials Keeping common walkways clear These services are different from heavy-duty cleaning, home repair, or skilled medical care. A caregiver is not replacing a cleaning crew, plumber, nurse, or therapist. Homemaking fits into the daily rhythm of the home and focuses on practical tasks that support comfort, safety, and independence. The Hidden Cost of Falling Behind at HomeHousehold changes are often among the first signs that an older adult could benefit from help.A once-organized kitchen may collect unopened mail. Laundry may remain unfinished because lifting a basket is painful. Food may expire because shopping and meal preparation feel overwhelming. A person may stop inviting friends over because clutter has become embarrassing. These situations do not automatically mean someone can no longer live independently. They may simply show that maintaining the home now requires more strength, mobility, or stamina than the person has available.Families should look for patterns rather than one untidy afternoon: Are chores skipped because they are physically difficult? Is clutter narrowing walking paths? Are clean clothes and linens regularly available? Is the refrigerator stocked with usable food? Does the senior seem anxious about the condition of the home? Is a family caregiver becoming exhausted? Addressing concerns early can keep a small household problem from becoming a crisis. Why Homemaking Matters on the Western SlopeGrand Junction blends a walkable downtown with river corridors, orchards, high-desert terrain, and nearby red-rock scenery. Downtown public art, the Riverfront Trail, Grand Mesa, and Colorado National Monument contribute to the areas active, community-centered lifestyle. The region also creates practical challenges for aging households. Summer heat can make errands and cleaning tiring. Winter weather may bring wet entryways and additional fall concerns. Larger homes in Orchard Mesa or the Redlands may require more upkeep than one person can comfortably manage.Homemaking support lets seniors save energy for activities that bring purpose and connection: gardening, visiting family in Palisade, attending a community event, or enjoying a meal without first facing a sink full of dishes. The goal is not a picture-perfect house. It is a home that remains safe, comfortable, and livable.Right at Home Grand Junction Supports Everyday RoutinesRight at Home Grand Junction provides non-medical in-home assistance for seniors and adults with disabilities. Its services include companion care, light housekeeping, grocery shopping, transportation, personal care, and specialty support. The office emphasizes individualized care plans because quality of life looks different for every client. One person may need laundry help twice a week. Another may benefit from meal preparation, grocery organization, and a kitchen reset. Someone recovering after a hospital stay may need temporary support until their stamina improves.A caregivers presence can also provide valuable social contact. Homemaking creates natural opportunities for conversation while folding towels, preparing lunch, or organizing a pantry.Meshelle McKendry has advised that maintaining a regular schedule of social contacts like that can be incredibly beneficial. Practical help and human connection often work together. Local client feedback reflects that broader approach. One family described a caregiver who provided mild housekeeping, prepared lunch, read aloud, and stayed engaged with the client. This is the difference between completing a checklist and supporting the persons entire day. How Families Can Introduce Help RespectfullySome older adults resist housekeeping assistance because they fear losing control or being judged. Families can make the conversation easier by focusing on choice.Start with the tasks the senior dislikes most or finds exhausting. Instead of saying, You cannot manage the house anymore, try, Would it help to have someone handle the laundry so you have more energy for other things? It may also help to: Begin with a limited schedule Let the senior identify household priorities Preserve established routines and preferences Explain that the caregiver is there to assist, not supervise Review the plan after the first few visits Adjust services as needs change A respectful start builds trust and gives the older adult time to become comfortable with the arrangement.Choosing Homemaking Support in Grand JunctionBefore selecting a homemaking or housekeeping provider, ask how caregivers are screened, trained, scheduled, and matched with clients. Clarify which household tasks are included, whether meal preparation or transportation can be added, and how changes to the care plan are handled.Families should also share important details about: Mobility limitations Memory concerns Pets in the home Food allergies or dietary preferences Preferred household routines Areas of the home requiring the most attention Tasks the senior would still like to complete independently Clear information helps the provider create support that is useful from the beginning.Frequently Asked QuestionsIs homemaking the same as professional house cleaning? No. Homemaking generally covers light, routine tasks that support daily living. Deep cleaning, carpet treatment, exterior work, and major repairs usually require another type of service. Can homemaking services help with meal preparation?Yes. Depending on the care plan, a caregiver may help prepare simple meals, organize groceries, wipe kitchen surfaces, and clean up afterward. How often can a senior receive housekeeping help?Schedules vary according to the persons needs and the providers availability. Some clients need a few hours each week, while others benefit from more frequent visits combined with companion or personal care. Can homemaking services support someone returning from the hospital?Homemaking may help during recovery by reducing the number of household tasks the person must manage. Families should discuss medical, mobility, and personal-care needs with the provider to determine the appropriate level of support. Can services change after they begin?Yes. Care plans can be reviewed as mobility, health, family availability, or household responsibilities change.Make Home Easier to ManageHelp with laundry, dishes, groceries, and everyday organization can protect far more than appearances. It can preserve confidence, reduce family stress, and help an older adult remain in familiar surroundings. Introducing Respite Care Without Making a Loved One Feel ReplacedFamily caregivers often understand why they need a break long before the older adult accepts outside help. A spouse may be exhausted from interrupted sleep, or an adult child may be balancing caregiving with work and children. Yet the person receiving care may hear respite and worry that the family is stepping away. That reaction is understandable. Accepting a new caregiver can feel like losing privacy or admitting that familiar routines have become difficult. The way a family introduces respite care can therefore matter as much as the services provided.Right at Home Grand Junction offers in-home respite care for seniors and adults with disabilities throughout Grand Junction and surrounding Mesa County communities. Its caregivers can follow a personalized care plan while a family caregiver rests, attends appointments, works, travels, or handles other responsibilities. (rightathome.net)Begin the Conversation Before a CrisisFamilies often wait until the primary caregiver is completely overwhelmed. At that point, everyone may be tired, worried, and less able to discuss change calmly.Respite care is usually easier to introduce as a planned source of support rather than an emergency response. Start with a specific concern instead of a broad announcement that the family cannot manage anymore.A family member might say:I need someone here while I attend my medical appointments. It would help me to have assistance with lunch twice a week.Lets have someone help with laundry and errands.I want to make sure you have company when I am away. This language presents respite care as an addition to the familys supportnot a replacement for the relationship.Let the Older Adult Help Shape the PlanRight at Home Grand Junction states that its care process begins with learning about the clients needs, preferences, routines, and personal history. The team then creates a person-centered care plan and matches the client with a caregiver based on factors such as personality, interests, and required services. (rightathome.net)Whenever possible, ask the older adult:Which tasks would they accept help with? What time of day feels most comfortable?Would they prefer a quiet or talkative caregiver?Which activities might they enjoy together? Are there household routines that should remain unchanged?Offering choices can reduce the feeling that decisions are being made without the persons involvement.A loved one who refuses care may be more open to help with transportation, meal preparation, or household tasks. Starting with a practical need can allow trust to develop naturally.Begin With a Short, Predictable VisitThe first respite visit does not need to last an entire day. A short appointment may feel less intimidating and give everyone a chance to adjust. The caregiver might join the client for coffee, prepare lunch, complete light housekeeping, take a walk, or work on a puzzle. Right at Home lists companion care, personal care, transportation, homemaking, medication reminders, and specialized support among its Grand Junction services. (rightathome.net)Schedule the first few visits at the same time each week when possible. Predictability is especially helpful for an older adult living with memory loss, anxiety, or difficulty adjusting to change. The family caregiver should remain available during the introduction but does not necessarily need to stay throughout every visit. A short errand can provide the caregiver and client with an opportunity to begin forming their own comfortable routine.Explain the Routine ClearlyBefore leaving, provide the respite caregiver with practical information about the clients day.Include:Preferred meals and beveragesMobility and transfer needsMedication reminder timesHearing or vision concernsPersonal-care preferencesFavorite television programs, music, or hobbiesBehaviors that may indicate pain or anxietyEmergency contactsHousehold safety informationRight at Homes care process includes detailed service notes, periodic supervisory visits, and reporting of changes in the clients condition so that care can be adjusted when needed. (rightathome.net)Families should also explain what not to change. A familiar chair, afternoon television program, or preferred way of preparing coffee may seem minor, but those routines can make the visit feel more natural.Use Respite Time for More Than ErrandsCaregivers sometimes use every break to catch up on groceries, bills, laundry, and appointments. Those tasks may be necessary, but respite should also create room for recovery.A caregiver might use the time to:Sleep without interruptionExercise or spend time outdoorsMeet a friendAttend a support groupEnjoy lunch with a spouseParticipate in church or community lifeSpend time with children or grandchildrenSit quietly without managing another taskGrand Junction offers many simple opportunities for restorative time, from walking along the Riverfront Trail to visiting a local caf, park, library, or community event. The purpose is not how the break is spent. The purpose is allowing the caregiver to step away without worrying that the older adult has been left unsupported.Make Respite Part of the Weekly CalendarOccasional help can be useful, but regular respite may provide greater stability. A predictable schedule allows the family caregiver to make appointments and plans instead of waiting until exhaustion becomes unavoidable.Right at Home provides customized care rather than a single standard schedule. Its Grand Junction office serves the city and nearby communities including Clifton, De Beque, Fruita, Glade Park, Loma, Mack, Palisade, Whitewater, and the Redlands. The agency offers a free in-home consultation to help families identify needs and create a personalized care plan. (rightathome.net)A weekly respite plan might include:One Morning Each WeekThe caregiver assists with bathing, dressing, breakfast, and light housekeeping while the family member attends appointments. Two Afternoons Each WeekVisits focus on lunch, companionship, walks, errands, and medication reminders.Occasional Extended VisitsLonger support may be arranged for family events, work obligations, travel, or periods when the primary caregiver needs additional rest. The schedule can grow or decrease as the familys circumstances change.Respite Can Strengthen the Family RelationshipWhen one family member performs every personal-care task, household chore, and appointment-related responsibility, the relationship can begin to feel entirely centered on caregiving.Regular respite gives family members an opportunity to return with more patience and emotional energy. A spouse can again enjoy conversation without simultaneously preparing dinner and organizing medications. An adult child can visit as a son or daughter rather than immediately beginning a list of chores.Meshelle and David McKendry own Right at Home Grand Junction and opened their Western Slope operation after recognizing a need for services supporting seniors and adults with disabilities. The business emphasizes helping clients remain involved in their own care decisions and continue living with dignity and independence. (rightathome.net)Because a published respite-care statement from Meshelle McKendry could not be independently verified, the following is an approval-ready quote for her review:Respite care is not about replacing the family caregiver. It is about surrounding the family with enough dependable support that everyone can continue caring with greater confidence, patience, and peace of mind.Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat can a respite caregiver do?Depending on the care plan, respite visits may include companionship, personal care, meal preparation, light housekeeping, transportation, medication reminders, mobility assistance, and support with daily routines. (rightathome.net)Is respite care only for people with dementia? No. Respite care may support families caring for an older adult or adult with a disability who needs companionship, supervision, personal assistance, transportation, or help with everyday activities. Can Right at Home provide care outside a private house?Yes. Right at Home Grand Junction states that caregivers may work in private homes, independent living communities, assisted living settings, skilled nursing facilities, and rehabilitation environments, subject to the clients needs and the settings policies. (rightathome.net)Where is Right at Home Grand Junction located? The office is located at 2777 Crossroads Boulevard, Suite 3, Grand Junction, Colorado 81506. The current telephone number listed by the agency is 970-697-1331. (rightathome.net)How does a family begin respite care? The process begins with a conversation and in-home assessment. Right at Home then develops a person-centered care plan, reviews it with the family, and works to match the client with an appropriate caregiver. Being a caregiver is a role that millions undertake out of love, dedication and necessity. Whether its an unpaid family caregiver or someone who has chosen a caregiving career, the role is critical to those who need help. Understanding some of the challenges caregivers face helps to appreciate their work. Emotional Weight - Caregivers often carry emotional burdens. They may experience feeling guilt, when they theyre not doing enough or when they take time for themselves. As a loved onesor a clientshealth fluctuates, the resulting emotional swings can cause stress and anxiety. Physical Toll - Physical demands of caregiving are often underestimated. Caregivers may do things like household tasks or keeping the care recipient comfortable. But if the care recipient has mobility issues, the caregiver may need to help them transfer from their bed to the toilet. Over time, these responsibilities can lead to physical strain and exhaustion. Financial Strain - Often caregivers provide care without pay, they will incur expenses related to the care of their loved ones - compounded if the caregiver has to reduce hours or even quit their job to provide care. Social Isolation - The time and energy demand often limit the caregivers ability to maintain social relationships, making them feel lonely and disconnected. Juggling Act - Many caregivers must balance the needs of the person theyre caring for, needs of the family while juggling employment. Recognition and Support - Caregiving is often not seen as real work, caregivers may struggle to find adequate resources, support and respite care. Right at Home of Mesa, Garfield, Eagle and Pitkin counties is here to help! Our trained caregivers can help with a range of services, from meal preparation and light housekeeping to assistance with hygiene and mobility. Each type of service, from companion care to skilled nursing care, caters to different needs and offers varying levels of support. Knowing the differences can help you make an informed decision thats best for your family, says Siarra Thorning of Right at Home Grand Junction. Heres a breakdown of the primary in-home caregiver services available. Companion Care (or Sitter Services) Companion care, sometimes known as sitter services, mainly provides companionship for seniors or individuals who do not require intensive medical care but may need supervision and light assistance. This service is ideal for those who wish to remain in their home and maintain a level of independence. Companion care helps ensure the individual is safe in their home and gets regular social interaction. Caregivers in this role engage in activities such as: Conversation and companionship, including hobbies, games, and walks Meal preparation and dining company Light housekeeping Errand services, such as grocery shopping Transportation to appointments or social events Medication reminders Companion care is suitable for individuals who are mostly independent but may be at risk if left alone for long periods, such as those with early-stage dementia or limited mobility, says Thorning. Personal Care (or Home Care) Personal care professionals provide a more hands-on level of support, helping with the personal care of an individual. This service is often more generally called home care, explains Thorning. These caregivers have more training than companion caregivers and can assist with the physical aspects of daily living. Their tasks typically include: Bathing and personal hygiene Dressing assistance Mobility assistance Incontinence care More detailed medication management Monitoring of vital signs under some circumstances Personal care is ideal for individuals who need regular assistance with personal care tasks but do not require medical intervention. Its a good fit for those with moderate disabilities or more advanced stages of age-related conditions. Home care visits are typically a minimum three-hour shift as often as needed up to 24/7 care and can continue as often as visits are needed. Nursing Care (Home Health Nurses) Nursing care at home is provided by registered nurses (RNs) or licensed practical nurses (LPNs). This type of care is necessary when an individual needs medical care at home, whether theyre recovering after a hospital stay or need help managing a chronic condition such as chronic lung or kidney disease. Home health nurses perform a range of medical tasks, including: Wound care Administering medications, including injections Pain management Medical equipment operation Monitoring health status and adjusting care plans accordingly Nursing care is suited for individuals with significant medical needs that require professional health monitoring. Its commonly used for recovering from surgery, managing serious illnesses, or managing complex health conditions requiring regular medical attention. Home health visits are often intermittent and limited. As Thorning notes, They last until recovery goals are met or the health care provider certifies the visits can continue. How To Decide What Type of In-Home Care Is BestThorning says its common for care needs to cross over these categories. For example, someone who needs a nurses help managing their lung disease at home may also need the housework-type help provided by a home care aide. Here are some additional thoughts to help with the decision: Evaluate the individuals level of independence and medical needs. A person with lung disease may not need help around the house. Consider the care recipients preferences and financial situation. Insurance (including Medicare/Medicaid) typically does not pay for in-home care or may pay only under limited circumstances. Consult with healthcare professionals for tailored advice and guidance. What kind of care does the primary care physician recommend? Patients who are being discharged from a hospital or nursing home may also receive recommendations from the discharge staff. Remember, advises Thorning the goal for receiving care or assistance at home is to maintain the highest quality of life possible. If you are helping a loved one or friend decide on care, respect their wishes and needs as they age or recover in the comfort of their own home. Questions To Ask When Considering In-Home Care Providers As you research in-home care options, ask each provider these questions to ensure the company is reputable and will provide exceptional, quality care: Are Social Security, federal and state taxes, and unemployment insurance paid? Are the caregivers bonded/insured? Are workers compensation and professional liability insurance paid? A trustworthy company will pay the taxes and insurance for its caregivers, so you are protected from legal and financial responsibility. Is the required state licensing up to date? Have all caregivers undergone background checks, including references and criminal records? Are supervisory home visits conducted to verify that quality care is being provided? Asking these questions will help sort out which providers have a good reputation and are highly regarded in the community and which do not have these qualities. Above all else, ensure that dependable, quality care will be provided by people you can trust.About Right at Home of Grand Junction 2777 Crossroads Blvd Ste 3 Grand Junction, CO 81506 Our office of Right at Home is a locally owned and operated franchise office of Right at Home, LLC, serving the communities of Mesa, Garfield, Eagle, and Pitkin Counties. Helen, a vibrant 78-year-old who thrives in the hustle and bustle of the winter holiday season, hosts gatherings and participates in longstanding family traditions. Come January, the sudden silence of her home, now void of guests and decorations, can feel overwhelming. This abrupt shift from constant social interaction to minimal contact is one of the main reasons seniors feel lonely after the holidays. This situation is, sadly, very common, says Meshelle McKendry of Right at Home of Glenwood Springs. The winter holidays bring a flurry of activity and companionship that can brighten seniors lives, whether they live alone or in a senior living community. But once the decorations are packed away and families return to their routines, a stark quiet can settle in, leaving many seniors feeling isolated. The contrast can be jarring, says McKendry. Why Post-Holiday Loneliness Occurs Social interaction drops off: During the holidays, older adults often experience an increase in social contactvisits from family and friends, holiday parties, and community events. Once the festivities end, the sudden drop in social interaction can feel particularly stark, leading to feelings of loneliness and isolation. Seasonal affective disorder (SAD): The winter months bring shorter days and longer nights, whichespecially where winters are coldcan lead to seasonal affective disorder or winter blues, exacerbating feelings of loneliness and sadness. Physical challenges: Cold weather can also limit an older adults mobility, making it difficult for them to leave home and engage with others. Reflection and remembrance: The holidays can also be a time of reflection, where older adults may reminisce about past holidays and loved ones or friends who are no longer present. Even during the holidays, notes McKendry these memories can contribute to feelings of loneliness. Coping Strategies for Seniors Compare Helens story to that of David, a retired teacher who lives in a senior community. His family lives across the country, and visits are infrequent. Although he sometimes does not see his family during the winter holidays, David has found new sources of purpose and community throughout the year. He volunteers at the local library and participates in the community garden, activities that keep him connected and engaged all year long. For older adults, maintaining a regular schedule of social contacts like that can be incredibly beneficial, says McKendry Engaging in regular activities, even simple ones like joining a book club, attending a craft workshop, or simply having a scheduled weekly phone call with family, can make a big difference. Here are more tips: Use technology. Technology can help bridge the gap, especially for family members who live far away. Video calls, social media, and even online games can provide interactive ways to stay connected. Schedule regular activities. Many senior centers and communities offer regular programming. If you have hobbies that you typically do independently, like reading, crafts, or gardening, consider inviting a friend to enjoy them with you. Look for volunteer work. Volunteering can be an excellent way for seniors to feel connected and purposeful, which are key to combating loneliness. McKendry suggests people start with their personal knowledge or interests. For example, avid readers could consider volunteering at a local library. Consider getting professional help for mental health. Be honest with yourself about your mental health. You could start by asking your primary health care provider for advice or a referral. Unchecked loneliness and isolation can ultimately affect your physical health and well-being. How Family and Friends Can Help Older Adults 1. Make regular visits or stay in touch. Make a concerted effort to visit or communicate regularly with the senior in your life. Something as simple as a daily text or phone call can make a big difference.2. Plan post-holiday visits. Consider scheduling a visit in January or February, which can give your older loved one something to anticipate after the holidays wind down.3. Involve them in planning. Encourage your older loved one to help plan that post-holiday visit or other gatherings or events. Planning can help fill their hours and get them talking with you or others.4. Watch for signs of depression. Signs of depression or severe loneliness could include changes in appetite, sleep, or general disinterest in life, says McKendry. 5. Early intervention is key in managing these issues.6. Talk to your older loved one about in-home caregivers. Right at Home offers companion care, in which our caregivers provide important social interaction while also helping with tasks at home or elsewhere. Understanding the reasons behind post-holiday loneliness and taking proactive steps to counteract it can help ensure that seniors feel connected, valued, and cared for all year round. By weaving a safety net of family, friends, activities, and professional support, we can help diminish the quiet that comes after the festive season and foster a year full of meaningful connections. Finding good Caregivers is an art, science and mostly luck when it comes to finding providers like Sandi, a 27-year veteran caring for the same clients! It was a Christmas Eve afternoon when Sandi came to Right at Home. With a strong recommendation and amazing resume, Sandi was hired on the spot! Sandi is a true Caregiver at heart, giving quality care, changing the lives of those she serves. For Mr. Baker, a late-stage cancer patient, terminally ill on and off for the last 28 years, Sandi has been there literally taking care of anything I needed for 27 of those years. Regardless of the difficulty, oddity or inconvenience, Sandi has seen to it that I had all I needed to live as comfortably and happily as possible through the good times and the bad. I cant imagine what my life would have been like without Sandi. She is simply the best.Caregivers like Sandi have changed all of our lives, through hearts of caring for everyone around them. The office staff at Right at Home all share a day-to-day blessing, knowing such caregivers. With their dedicated spirit and the ability to brighten a room, they bring a quirky joke, a hug and sometimes just a smile knowing we are all in it together. Our joy is sharing these rare individuals with our clients and watching relationships bloom. Twas the day before Christmas, when all through the office an amazing caregiver would enter to offer a heart of caregiving favor. Little did we know we had been blessed beyond belief to have a person as Sandi to provide home relief. She would bring long-served clients with their needs and conditions, knowing she would be there to help with their afflictions. With a twinkle in her eye and spring in her step, Sandi continues to offer cheer to all making for a very good day!
