Grand Living isnt just about First-Class Resort style living. To understand our unique differences, well share a heartwarming story about a server named Kaden Rathbun and our resident, Lou C. who lives at our Grand Living at Lakewood Ranch community in Sarasota, Florida. This story from Grand Livings Executive Director, Michelle Orlando, couldnt be a more perfect example of observing and adjusting to the pace of our resident, creating a unique and memorable experience.Kaden Rathbun is a football player. He has a very special connection with many of our residents but a special place in his heart for Lou C. who has Parkinsons which affects his mobility. Lou was always interested in Kadens football and school. When Kaden asked him to attend a game Lou cried and said it would mean the world to him, but he couldnt get there.Kaden is the son of our Maintenance Director, so when he went home and told his Dad that they had to get Lou to a game, they made it happen! The family picked him up, assisted him in his wheelchair to a VIP sideline spot (arranged by Eds wife), and helped him stand for pictures and the National Anthem! They even had Lous name announced on the PA system, and when some of the other Grand Living employees heard he was there, they found him for a big welcome. Lou was tearful telling everyone about his big adventure and how special he was made to feel at the Big Homecoming Game! There were tears running down his cheek as he proudly stood for the National Anthem. Lou will always remember how Kaden and his family and friends made him feel that very special evening.
Finding Comfort and Connection with Grand Livings LUMINATIONS ProgramThe whispers start subtly. A misplaced set of keys, a forgotten name, a moment of confusion that quickly passes. But as time goes on, these moments may become more frequent, more pronounced. For you or a loved one experiencing the challenges of memory loss, the journey can feel isolating and uncertain. Recognizing the signs and understanding the available support is the first step towards finding peace and a renewed sense of well-being.At Grand Living, we understand the complexities and sensitivities surrounding memory loss. Thats why weve thoughtfully designed our LUMINATIONS Memory Care program a beacon of support that embraces each residents unique life story and provides a nurturing environment where they can continue to thrive. Recognizing the Need: Could Memory Care Be the Right Choice?Navigating the early stages of memory loss can be challenging for both the individual and their family. Its important to be aware of potential indicators that might suggest the need for specialized memory care. These can include: Increasing Forgetfulness: More than just misplacing items occasionally, this involves difficulty remembering recent events, conversations, or appointments, impacting daily life.Challenges with Daily Tasks: Activities that were once routine, such as managing finances, preparing meals, or personal care, may become increasingly difficult.Communication Difficulties: Struggling to find the right words, follow conversations, or express thoughts clearly can be a significant indicator.Disorientation to Time and Place: Confusion about the day of the week, the current year, or even their location can become more frequent.Changes in Mood and Behavior: Increased irritability, anxiety, agitation, or withdrawal can sometimes accompany memory loss.Difficulty with Problem-Solving and Planning: Tasks that require sequential steps or decision-making may become overwhelming.Wandering or Getting Lost: Forgetting familiar surroundings and having the urge to wander can pose safety risks.Increased Reliance on Family: When a loved one requires significant and increasing support with daily living and safety, it may be time to consider professional care. Its crucial to remember that these signs can vary from person to person and may be indicative of other conditions. A thorough evaluation by a healthcare professional is essential for an accurate diagnosis and to determine the most appropriate course of action (Memory Problems, Forgetfulness, and Aging, 2023). LUMINATIONS: Where Every Life Story Shines BrightAt Grand Living, we believe that a diagnosis of Alzheimers or dementia does not diminish a persons worth or their capacity for joy and connection. For more information on Grand Living, CLICK HERE!Author: Brandy Middleton, Grand Living at Tamaya, Director of SalesMs. Patsy Longino has lived with Grand Living at Lakewood Ranch since October 1, 2021. She moved to our residence from a 55+ community with no organized fitness or activities. Patsy saw our sign when shopping at Sprouts grocery store in the early summer of 2021 and told her nieces about us. Shortly after, Patsy joined us for an event that discussed Senior Living options. Our Director of Fitness, Daniel Tirado, spoke about how he can help our residents. At the end of the presentation, he took her on a tour of our community. Then her nieces helped their parents move in, Patsy's brother and sister-in-law. Patsy moved in just a few months later because they loved the community and she saw how well they were treated. Before moving in, she only played games and walked on her own occasionally. Patsy enjoys having all the activities and fitness indoors now, so she does'nt have to worry about the weather.Patsy pulled some muscles in her back after moving into our community. The fitness classes she started going to when she first moved in noticeably helped her back feel better. Daniel also gave her excellent advice on how to help with her back pain. Now Patsy does every morning class with the stretches because it helps her immensely. She is stiff in the mornings and at the beginning of the first class she's not able to touch her toes. This changes by the end of class! Patsy is very proud of that! Daniels classes also help with her balance. She used to hold on to things while standing but now she does'nt have to hold on to them as much. She attends all possible fitness classes with Chair Yoga, Chair Aerobics, and Pedal the World being her favorites. Weight training and resistance band class are also important, so she makes sure to attend those as well. She says she enjoys the classes because every time she walks in, there are friendly faces and everyone says hello. There is also some laughter shared, which makes the class and day be more enjoyable. She enjoys attending classes with her brother and sister-in-law. While they don't go to all the classes she likes, the classes are helping her family and herself. Patsy had confessed that she had not used our fitness center yet so Daniel showed her some equipment she might like. She now makes her appointments around fitness, so she does'nt miss a class or her favorite activities like our musical events. Patsy is looking forward to water aerobics when it warms up in the summer! When creating his fitness classes, Daniel set goals of improving functionality, decreasing pain, and enhancing the quality of life for our residents. He's excited that it is showing with Patsy and other residents. Some residents have mentioned they are able to avoid taking pain medications now because they attend Daniels classes. He focuses on the fact that exercise is medicine!

Where Movement Meets Purpose, and Every Day is EnergizingIn todays senior living communities, health and wellness are no longer optionalthey are essential. Over 75% of senior living communities report having formal wellness programming in place, and wellness is ranked as a high or essential priority by up to 81% of industry leaders (International Council on Active Aging, 2023). Yet, while nearly 90% of communities offer fitness activities, its estimated that fewer than half employ a full-time Director of Fitnessa role that has become a key differentiator in communities prioritizing holistic wellbeing. At Grand Living, we are proud to have full-time Directors of Fitness at every community. However, they are more than instructorsthey are daily motivators, community connectors, and champions of joyful movement. These wellness professionals are at the heart of our vibrant lifestyle, designing and delivering experiences that support physical strength, emotional resilience, and meaningful engagement. Whether through group classes, personal coaching, or adapted memory care programming, they help residents move with purpose and live with energy. But what does a typical day look like for a Grand Living Fitness Director? Lets take a closer lookIt Starts with HeartBefore a single stretch or step, the day begins with intention at the Sterling Touch (Grand Livings signature service) meeting, where team members come together to discuss the Grand Living principles that we value, discuss the plans for the day, share encouragement, and build camaraderie. From there, our Fitness Directors spring into actionprepping studios, wiping down equipment, checking towels, and setting the tone with upbeat music and a thoughtfully planned class lineup.Mornings often include friendly check-ins with residents in the dining room, inspiring them to join a class or even try something new. Its not just about exerciseits about building relationships and community.Energizing the MorningAs the community wakes up, so does the movement. The morning fitness schedule varies by location but often includes a dynamic mix such as: Sunrise Stretch and Walk & Talk Clubs, ideal for boosting mood and circulation. Chair Yoga, Advanced Balance, and Tai Chi/Qigong, blending mindful movement with physical wellness. Strength Training, Resistance Work, and Core Conditioning, focused on supporting mobility, independence, and confidence in everyday life. Water Aerobics and Water Walking, combining gentle resistance with fun in the pool. One highlight many residents look forward to? Dynamic Drumminga high-energy, music-fueled workout using drumsticks and choreographed rhythms that get hearts pumping and smiles spreading. Its exercise disguised as a dance party!Fitness for All Including LUMINATIONS NeighborhoodsThe Grand Living commitment to wellness extends to everyone, including residents in our Luminations Memory Care neighborhoods. Fitness Directors regularly visit these neighborhoods, delivering adapted programs like gentle stretching, therapy ball routines, SmartFIT games, or even group walks. Some days, youll find laughter filling the room during a SmartFIT spelling bee or while drumming to familiar tunes.Whether seated or standing, these classes are thoughtfully designed to mimic daily activities, support cognitive function, and foster a sense of purpose and joy.Midday Moments & Personal TouchesBetween classes, Fitness Directors often assist individual residentshelping them walk using parallel bars, setting up personalized workouts, or guiding them through prescribed physical therapy routines. They also tackle administrative tasks like tracking participation, creating monthly class calendars, and coordinating with local health professionals for upcoming wellness talks. Lunch is often a quick bite, followed by more prep and another round of invigorating activities.Afternoon MomentumAfternoons are just as full and exciting. Depending on the day, residents might dive into: Bingocize, a mashup of bingo and exercise where participants do a move when its called on their card. Pedal the World, where scenic tours and educational videos play while residents cycle with foot pedals. Brain-Fit using the SmartFIT board, combining cognitive and physical challenges. Balance and Strength Classes, targeting key joints and muscle groups for fall prevention and stability. Wii Bowling or recreational favorites like Cornhole, Chair Badminton, or Chair Hockey.Fitness Directors are often spotted behind the scenes toofolding towels, creating new programs, updating participation data, or supporting community-wide events and seasonal celebrations.Ending the Day with GratitudeAs the day winds down, Fitness Directors make one final sweep of the gym, tidy the studio, wipe down equipment, and prep for the next days classes. Its a quiet moment of reflection, knowing theyve made a differencenot just physically, but emotionally and socially, too.More Than a RoleIts a CallingWhat makes being a Fitness Director at Grand Living so fulfilling? Its the residents. Watching someone gain strength, try something new, or simply light up with laughter during a class is what fuels the passion. These leaders are not just teaching movementtheyre creating moments of purpose, empowerment, and joy.
