Follow These 11 Steps for Supple Skin this Season Most of us know how important it is to protect our skin from the suns damaging rays in the summer. But did you also know its important to have a winter game plan to keep your skin moisturized and glowing? In fact, the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) designates November Healthy Skin Month to educate and empower people of all ages to learn how to take great care of their skin. Its the bodys largest organ, after all and everybodys got it! Read on for some skin-loving actions you can take this month and all season long. 1. Protect your skin from the sun if youre going to go outside. Yes, even in winter! Keep those summer habits alive and slather on sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher and dont forget to cover up with protective clothing and a broad-brimmed hat. UVA and UVB rays are alive and well all winter long and they can still cause damage to your skin, raise your risk for skin cancer and contribute to premature aging. 2. Avoid tanning beds. You may be tempted to keep your sun-kissed look going all winter long courtesy of a tanning bed, but resist. Research shows that UV rays from tanning beds can increase your risk for skin cancer and could age your skin, resulting in more wrinkles. 3. Learn the ABCDEs of skin cancer. There are certain changes to your moles, birthmarks and skin that may be cause for concern. Known as the ABCDEs, if you notice these signs, the National Institute on Aging recommends making an appointment with your primary care provider or a dermatologist to make sure its not an indication of cancer: Asymmetry (i.e. one half of the spot looks different from the other half) Borders are irregular Color changes or it has more than one color Diameter is larger than a pencil eraser Evolving; meaning it in size, shape, symptoms (such as itching or tenderness), surface (especially if its bleeding), or shades of color 4. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. Winter brings colder temperatures and drier air, and your skin may need a little extra TLC to feel its best. To avoid or treat dry, itchy skin, the AAD suggests applying moisturizer right after you step out of the shower, so it can lock in the extra moisture. Further, the AAD recommends using an ointment or cream instead of lotion, because those products tend to be less irritating and more effective when dealing with dry skin. Just make sure the items you select are gentle and fragrance-free, otherwise they may feel a little harsh, especially if your skin is cracked or chapped. 5. Dont neglect your lips. The cold weather, the dry air, the wind and the sun can all wreak havoc on your skin and cause your lips to chap. Use a non-irritating lip balm or lip moisturizer to seal moisture into your smile. 6. When you shower or bathe, opt for warm water, not hot. It sounds counterintuitive and a little less enjoyable. Who doesnt love a hot shower when its freezing cold out? But in truth, hot water will only further dry your skin, because it may strip off natural oils you need to retain moisture. 7. Consider using a humidifier. Winter air tends to be dry, and when the heater kicks on in your home, its even more so. A humidifier returns some of that moisture to the air, and your skin may thank you for it. 8. Quit smoking. Have you ever met a 40-year-old heavy smoker who looked much older? Thats because tobacco isnt doing the skin or other systems in the body any favors. According to the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology, the long-term effects of smoking may include dry skin, uneven pigmentation, bags around the eyes, sagging around the jaw and deepening wrinkles and furrows on the face. If you need help quitting tobacco, talk to your doctor or reach out to the American Lung Associations Tobacco Quitline. 9. Make healthy food choices. What you eat and drink impacts the way your body functions, and research has shown that if youre not getting the right nutrients your skin may show it. Strive to eat a healthy diet, filled with whole foods, antioxidants and fiber. Make a habit of consuming lots of lean proteins, fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains. And dont forget to drink lots of water. Proper hydration may also help your skin look and feel better. 10. Find ways to manage your stress. Stress can worm its way through our entire physical being and cause disruptions in surprising ways. According to the AAD, stress can affect the way our skin appears by increasing inflammation, slowing down the wound-healing process and potentially interfering with skin conditions. Because our glands produce more oil when were stressed, people with acne experience breakouts, and people with psoriasis and eczema may have flare-ups. To help regulate your system, try different stress management endeavors, such as exercise, meditation, mindfulness, yoga and deep breathing. When you find one you like, make a daily practice of it. 11. Get your zzzzzs. When you sleep, your body can focus its energy on repairing different systems, including your skin. Research has shown that people who arent getting enough sleep on the regular may show earlier signs of aging, experience diminished skin barrier functions and feel less satisfied with their appearance. Aim for seven to nine hours a night to get the biggest benefits from sleeping. Itchy, uncomfortable skin isnt a winter requirement. By making a few simple changes to your routine in the fall, you can help put moisture back where it belongs, quickly, before things get uncomfortable. How Much Do You Really Know About Arthritis?Arthritis is a term that many people associate with older adults experiencing pain in their joints. But did you know that arthritis, itself, is not a diagnosis, but a term that describes dozens of diseases and conditions? According to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS), the word arthritis means joint inflammation, and may be used to describe any condition affecting the joints, for people of all ages. In fact, arthritis impacts one in five adults in the United States and is the leading cause of work disability.To help you better understand arthritis, weve posed five questions below that explore common arthritic diseases, who is at risk and how to manage these conditions. How many types of arthritis are there?There are more than 100 types of arthritic diseases, which can impact the joints, tendons, ligaments and bones by causing stiffness, swelling and pain. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), some of the more common types of arthritis include the following:Osteoarthritis. This kind of arthritis occurs when joints in the body break down. Its most commonly experienced in the hands, hips, knees and back.Rheumatoid arthritis. This is an autoimmune disease, meaning the bodys immune system causes deterioration by attacking its own tissues. It can damage the joints in the hands, wrists and knees. Potentially, it could also impact the lungs, heart and eyes.Gout. This type of arthritis tends to impact only one joint at a time. During a flare-up, uric acid crystals form within a joint and cause pain, swelling and tenderness. Often, it impacts the big toe.Fibromyalgia. By causing pain throughout the body, fibromyalgia can have a significant impact on a persons quality of life and ability to work.Juvenile arthritis. Also known as childhood arthritis, this condition impacts nearly 220,000 people younger than 18. Its caused by an immune system that is overactive and results in swelling in the joints. What are signs and symptoms to look for?Because there are so many types of arthritis, and because symptoms may overlap with other conditions, it can be difficult to diagnose. The Arthritis Foundation says that if youre experiencing the following signs and symptoms you should consider talking to a doctor:Tenderness, pain, swelling and/or stiffness in one joint or several jointsRedness on or around a jointA joint that feels warmTrouble moving a joint or engaging in your day-to-day activitiesAny joint symptoms that concern youWho gets arthritis?Anyone can get arthritis, no matter their age, gender or cultural background. However, some groups of people face a higher risk than others for certain types of arthritis. For example, according to the CDC women face a higher risk for fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis while men are more likely to develop gout. Further, its not uncommon for people experiencing other chronic conditions, such as obesity, diabetes and heart disease, to also have arthritis.Other risk factors can include:Age, with the risk increasing as you get olderFamily history, with some types of arthritis have a hereditary connection, including rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and ankylosing spondylitisWeight, with people who are overweight or obese facing an increased risk for osteoarthritis impacting the knees and other jointsSmokingCertain infectionsAn injury to a jointService in the military Are there actions you can take to lower your risk for arthritis?Possibly. While there is no magic pill that can protect you from arthritis, some people may be able to reduce their risks or at least delay the onset of certain types of arthritis, according to the Arthritis Foundation. For example, maintaining a healthy weight may help lower your risk for osteoarthritis; quitting (or never starting) smoking may help prevent rheumatoid arthritis; and eating a healthy diet that is low in sugar and alcohol as well as purines (thats a chemical compound that turns into uric acid) may help decrease your risk for gout. What can you do to manage your arthritis?If youve been diagnosed with arthritis, there are a number of steps that you can take that may help to ease pain and decrease inflammation. Those include:See your healthcare provider regularly and follow their advice. They know you best and can help you devise a plan to address your symptoms and help you continue to do the things you enjoy in life.Move more. It may sound counterintuitive, but physical activity may actual help reduce pain and improve the way you feel and move, according to the CDC. Try out a variety of joint-friendly activities, such as cycling, swimming, walking and tai chi. If working out is new to you, talk to your doctor first. With their approval, start small, aiming for five to 10 minutes at a time, and work towards the goal of 150 minutes per week, along with two days of strength-building activities. Manage your weight. Weight can put additional stress on your joints. Aim to reach or maintain a healthy weight through diet and exercise. If youre struggling, ask your doctor for advice.Make healthy eating choices. Research shows that some foods can help control inflammation, while others may contribute to inflammation. People living with arthritis may benefit from an anti-inflammatory diet, which includes fish, nuts, beans, fruits and vegetables (the Mediterranean Diet is a good place to look for guidance, according to the Arthritis Foundation). At the same time, try to limit the foods you eat that cause inflammation, including processed foods like white bread and pastries, fried foods, soda and sugary beverages, red meat and processed meats, along with margarine, shortening and lard. Take care of your mental health. Any chronic condition can take a toll on how youre feeling. And if the condition is limiting your usual activities, as arthritis may do, it can be especially stressful and isolating. If youre feeling hopeless or anxious, or youve lost interest doing the things that once brought you joy, find help. Talk to your primary care provider or connect with a counselor or therapist. A support group might also be useful. Early detection of lung cancer increases your odds of successful treatment and celebrating more birthdays. But a lung cancer screening comes with a few risks, too. So, should you get checked?The American Cancer Society, American Lung Association and the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) say yes if you meet certain criteria tied to long-time cigarette use.Lets take a closer look at your options with pulmonologist Peter Mazzone, MD, MPH.Who should get a lung cancer screening?A lung cancer screening isnt for everyone, states Dr. Mazzone. Its recommended only for adults who are at high risk for the disease which explains why screening guidelines are pretty specific.The USPSTF suggests an annual lung cancer screening if all of the following apply: Youre between age 50 and 80.Youve smoked at least 20 pack-years of cigarettes. (To calculate pack-years, multiply the average number of packs smoked per day by the number of years you smoked. So, 20 pack-years is one pack a day for 20 years or two packs a day for 10 years).You currently smoke or have quit smoking within the past 15 years.Its also important that youre healthy enough to benefit from finding and treating early-stage lung cancer. People who get tested dont typically have symptoms of lung cancer.If someone comes to us in a wheelchair already wearing oxygen and couldnt tolerate treatment, they typically arent eligible for screening, clarifies Dr. Mazzone. However, there are nearly 15 million Americans who are at high risk and should receive screening.It should be noted, too, that a lung cancer screening is a quick and painless imaging exam. It uses low-dose computed tomography, or low-dose CT, to capture very detailed pictures of your lungs.Why is lung cancer screening important?As noted, lung cancer often doesnt announce itself with early symptoms. So, without an annual screening, lung cancer is often detected once the disease has progressed and spread which makes successful treatment less likely.People with lung cancer have about an 80% chance of being alive five years later if the cancer is diagnosed and treatment begins during Stage 1. The five-year survival rate is about 4% if tumors have spread.That leads us to this alarming reality: Only about 1 in 4 people with lung cancer are diagnosed before the cancer spreads. Early detection is key to changing that, says Dr. Mazzone.Are lung cancer screenings perfect? Of course not. Scans sometimes detect small spots called nodules that look concerning but are basically harmless little scars. Radiation exposure is a concern, too. Ditto for overdiagnosis of conditions and additional testing and stress.But the benefits of lung cancer screening still outweigh any potential harm for many people, notes Dr. Mazzone.How often is lung cancer found during a screening?Lung cancer is found in about 1 in every 140 people who get screened. This may sound like a small number, but its about the same or better than the results for breast cancer and colon cancer screening.How to decide whether to get a lung screening?A counseling session is often required before a lung cancer screening so you can discuss lung cancer risks, the screening process, benefits and potential harm. It can be a complex and difficult decision for people to make.Many people value the potential benefit of screening so much theyre happy to accept them, explains Dr. Mazzone. Others may have a different perspective. Summer is here and its time for the whole family to get moving!Every year, the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) celebrates Family Health & Fitness Day the second Saturday in June (this year its June 8). The goal is to encourage families to make the most of their local park and rec facilities. For many people, thats pretty convenient: 74% of people who live in the U.S. are walking distance from a park, playground, recreation center or open space. Which is great news, because research shows that children and adults who live near parks and spend time in nature actually tend to be healthier mentally and physically.This month, in honor of Family Health & Fitness Day, think about the green spaces that are close to you, and dream up some ways to bring the great outdoors into your familys summer routine. Here are some ideas for fun family adventures all season long.Take a family walk to your local park. Grab your walking shoes and leave the car behind! Wave to the neighbors as you amble over to your favorite open space. Isnt it nice to get away from technology and screens and breathe in some fresh air with the family? You could even consider making this a part of your regular evening routine.Keep your park clean. Grab a trash bag and some gloves and pick up any trash you encounter at the park, playground or recreation facility. Make it beautiful so you and others can enjoy the serenity of nature, without being distracted by litter. Bonus: picking up trash can be a good workout!Sign up for a 5k (or plan your own). Its recommended only for adults who are at high risk for the disease which explains why screening guidelines are pretty specific.The USPSTF suggests an annual lung cancer screening if all of the following apply: Youre between age 50 and 80.Youve smoked at least 20 pack-years of cigarettes. Protect your skin from the sun if youre going to go outside. Yes, even in winter! Keep those summer habits alive and slather on sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher and dont forget to cover up with protective clothing and a broad-brimmed hat. UVA and UVB rays are alive and well all winter long and they can still cause damage to your skin, raise your risk for skin cancer and contribute to premature aging. 2. Avoid tanning beds. You may be tempted to keep your sun-kissed look going all winter long courtesy of a tanning bed, but resist. Research shows that UV rays from tanning beds can increase your risk for skin cancer and could age your skin, resulting in more wrinkles. 3. Learn the ABCDEs of skin cancer. There are certain changes to your moles, birthmarks and skin that may be cause for concern. Known as the ABCDEs, if you notice these signs, the National Institute on Aging recommends making an appointment with your primary care provider or a dermatologist to make sure its not an indication of cancer: Asymmetry (i.e. one half of the spot looks different from the other half) Borders are irregular Color changes or it has more than one color Diameter is larger than a pencil eraser Evolving; meaning it in size, shape, symptoms (such as itching or tenderness), surface (especially if its bleeding), or shades of color 4. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. Winter brings colder temperatures and drier air, and your skin may need a little extra TLC to feel its best.
