Browse NowChristmas is coming, and peppermint bark is one of those special treats everyone wants to get their hands on during the holiday season. Luckily for all of us, a batch can be prepped in 10 minutes! If you have never had peppermint bark, its a holiday treat made from semi-sweet or dark chocolate, white chocolate and chopped candy canes. Not only is it delicious, but its so easy to make, and makes a great homemade gift around the holidays as well.Ingredientssemisweet (or dark chocolate) chopped12oz white chocolate, choppedYou can also use chocolate chips or melting rounds if you don't want to worry about chopping a brick of chocolate. tsp. peppermint extract (adds minty deliciousness)8 candy canes, crushedDirectionsLine a baking sheet with parchment paper. Fill the bottom of a large pot with 3 water and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Reduce heat to low, then place a large heatproof bowl on top creating a double boiler. Add the semi-sweet or dark chocolate and stir occasionally until the chocolate has melted and make sure you don't get any water in your chocolate, or it will seize. Stir in the extract. Pour into prepared baking sheet and spread into an even layer with an offset spatula. Refrigerate until set, about 20 minutes.Over the same pot of barely simmering water, place another large heatproof bowl. Add white chocolate and stir until melted. Pour over the set semi-sweet chocolate and then top immediately with crushed candy canes. Refrigerate until set. About 20 minutes.Alternate melting method: You can microwave your chocolate instead of melting it on the stove. Place your chocolate in a large heatproof bowl and microwave on low in 30 second increments. Remove the bowl from the microwave and stir at each increment until its thoroughly mixed and melted. Microwaved chocolate can burn if not mixed carefully during the melting process.Once the bark has completely set, for a more rustic look, break it apart with your hands. If it is too thick to break with your hands, the flat side of a meat mallet should do the trick. If giving as a gift you may want cleaner cuts. If so, use a sharp knife that has been dipped in hot water and dried.Leftover peppermint bark can be used in a variety of recipes including cake balls, hot cocoa, popcorn topping, and cheesecake! Just type in leftover peppermint bark in your search engine for an endless supply of yummy recipe ideas. Enjoy the holiday season and your Peppermint Bark.

Changing Your Diet May HelpThere is a lot to consider before adding vitamin and mineral supplements to your diet.Like most adults, you are probably bombarded with information about these types of supplements. So, do vitamins have health benefits? That is a question that is best discussed with your health care provider to determine what would be recommend for you according to any health issues you may have or medications you may be taking. Since each person has different needs, so are their vitamin and mineral requirements. Here are a few factors to consider.Consider Your Nutritional StatusIf you are eating a healthy diet, then chances are you are getting all the nutrients you need. According to AARP, multivitamins and supplements are a small bit of extra insurance meant to fill in the gaps in a generally healthy diet. They do not take the place of real food. Of course, there are some exceptions such as poor absorption problems, or poor appetite, or bad diet.Seek Your Doctors AdviceBefore adding supplements to your diet, it is probably a good idea to talk to your doctor first. Although multivitamin and mineral supplements may seem harmless, sometimes they may cause more harm than good. Some vitamin supplements may cause an adverse reaction by increasing side effects or altering the effectiveness of certain prescriptions drugs. In some people, vitamins can exacerbate some undiagnosed illnesses.Be Aware of Surgery ConcernsAgain, let a doctor tell you when to avoid a supplement or vitamin or change your diet. May people are not aware that some vitamin supplements can cause problems after surgery. Vitamin supplements such as Vitamin E should be avoided before surgery because it impedes blood clotting. Herbal supplements such as ephedra, garlic, ginseng, and others should not be taken two weeks before surgery. There is a list of supplements to avoid so be sure to consult with a doctor prior to surgery and provide the list of vitamin and mineral supplements that you are taking.Consider Your PrescriptionsLong term use of some prescriptions may deplete vitamins and minerals from your body. Make sure to keep up with your routine blood work and consult your health care provider if you have any questions or concerns. Here are some examples of prescriptions and what vitamins and minerals they may deplete. This is not an exhaustive list, so make sure you ask your primary doctor about your prescriptions and how they may be affecting you.Lasixcan rob the body of potassium, magnesium, and calcium. Eating foods that are rich in these minerals may be all that is needed. However, based upon your blood work results, your health care provider may feel that a supplement is necessary.Statinsare used for many people to lower their cholesterol but unfortunately these drugs can also inhibit the production of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) which is a particularly important vitamin. Mild to severe leg cramping can occur when this vitamin is diminished by the statin drug which may be relieved when a supplement of CoQ10 is taken.Diabetic medicationssuch as metformin can reduce levels of folic acid and vitaminParkinsons drugslevodopa and carbidopa (Sinemet) may reduce levels of vitamins B6, B12, and folic acid which are also important to your system. If you do not eat meat or dairy products, you may be deficient in B12 due to a vegan diet which is then exacerbated if taking Sinemet. Your doctor can check this with a simple blood test.Anticonvulsants and corticosteroidsreduce levels of calcium and vitamin D. According to the Cleveland Clinic, vitamin D is one of many vitamins needed to stay healthy.Consider AgeAs we age our bodies use vitamins and minerals differently. Search the vitamin aisle and you will probably find a plethora of options for seniors.Of all the research available to find through an internet search, there seems to be just a handful of vitamins and minerals that healthy seniors need. Here is a recommended list of vitamins for people 60+.Vitamin DVitamin B12CalciumVitamin B6Acetyl-L-Carnitine (ALCAR)Consider Assisting Hands Home Care if you or a loved one needs assistance in the home. The symptoms of Parkinsons disease may make some of your senior loved ones favorite activities unsafe now, but that doesnt mean he or she has to give up on having fun. Some of the best activities for seniors can easily be done by someone with tremors or muscle weakness. In fact, these activities can shift your loved ones perspective if he or she has been facing difficulty with the loss of certain abilities. 1. Hold a Video Game CompetitionOlder adults were around during the time when many video games first came out, and some of the best ones are making comebacks. Find a video game console your loved one can use to play his or her favorite games, and show him or her how to operate the controller. Since video games can be played while sitting down, your loved one can still get a thrill from competition without worrying about falling. Your loved one can also try using the console to play active games when theres a professional caregiver around for support. Many seniors in the early stages of Parkinsons are able to live on their own, but they may need a bit of help with the everyday tasks of life, such as exercising and preparing nutritious meals. Aging adults who require assistance with the tasks of daily living can benefit from reliable home care service. Families trust Assisting Hands Home Care to provide the high-quality care their elderly loved ones need and deserve. Our caregivers are trained to help seniors prevent serious illnesses and encourage them to make healthier decisions as they age. 2. Paint Outdoor LandscapesRunning and hiking on treacherous paths may be off the table now, but your loved one can still enjoy spending time outside. Learning to paint landscapes gives your loved one a reason to head outside, and theres enough of a challenge in practicing new techniques to keep him or her interested. Help your loved one put together a kit of art supplies he or she can use on the front porch, and arrange for a caregiver to occasionally take your loved one to a new location, such as a lake or pond, thats perfect for painting. 3. Grow a GardenGardening can be as simple as a single container on a windowsill, or your loved one may choose to go all out by turning the backyard into an orchard. To make this activity extra safe, try to put your loved ones plants up higher where he or she can reach them without having to worry about tripping over pots or barriers. Your loved one will get a bit of exercise from this pursuit, and he or she may even be interested in eating a healthier, Parkinsons-friendly diet. Mobility issues in the advanced stages of Parkinsons disease can make caring for aging adults increasingly challenging. If youre the primary family caregiver for a senior loved one living in Naples, live-in care is available if your loved ones health has become too difficult to manage without professional expertise. At Assisting Hands Home Care, we take measures to help seniors prevent illness and injury by assisting with exercise and mobility, preparing nutritious meals, helping with bathing and other personal hygiene tasks, and much more. 4. Join a Reading ClubReading is one of the safest activities there is, provided a person doesnt try to read and walk at the same time. Reading clubs also provide new social contacts to reach out to in an emergency. Keep in mind your loved one may find it difficult to hold books or turn pages in the later stages of the disease. If this is the case, encourage reading with a friend or caregiver who can provide support for the book, or your loved one can try audio versions of his or her favorite stories. 5. Volunteer for a CharityYour loved one deserves to feel like a contributing member of society. If Parkinsons symptoms have made your loved one give up working, help him or her find a volunteer position thats safe to do with limited abilities. For instance, your loved one may enjoy answering phone calls at a local charity or playing with animals from a shelter. Caring for a loved one with Parkinsons can be extremely challenging, and a compassionate professional caregiver can be a wonderful source of support. Here are a few ways you can encourage your parent to start working out more often. Volunteer to Exercise TogetherPeople of all ages are more likely to exercise when they have someone doing it with them. A workout buddy provides motivation and also makes exercising more fun. If your loved one has this mindset, try to come up with ways to exercise that he or she will find more interesting. Some seniors can be convinced to exercise with fun activities like hiking in nature, swimming in a community pool, or taking a dancing class. Others may be more interested in exercising with machines that let them row or bike while watching their favorite television shows. Talk about the Benefits of ExercisingSome seniors resist exercise because they think its only useful to young people who want to stay in shape or run marathons. Discussing the benefits of exercise may be motivating for the elderly. Talk about how exercise reduces heart attack risk, prevents obesity, and manages diabetes. You can also mention that exercising increases balance, coordination, and strength so your loved one can remain independent and mobile. During this talk, try to avoid sounding bossy or controlling. Instead, focus on how much you care about your loved one and how much you would like him or her to maintain better health.Exercising on a regular basis isnt the only way older adults can boost their health. Knowledge is PowerAs a caregiver to your loved one, it is important to learn as much as you can about Glaucoma, also called the silent thief of sight, so that you can possibly stave off its damaging effects. Being informed will help reduce anxiety and possibly alter the outcome of the diagnosis to be more positive. Here is what is known about glaucoma, according to www.glaucoma.org:Glaucoma is a group of conditions where the nerve connecting the eye to the brain is deteriorated or damaged, usually due to high eye pressure. The most common type of glaucoma is open-angle glaucoma. This type often has no symptoms other than slow vision loss. Angle-closure glaucoma is rare. This type is considered a medical emergency. The symptoms include eye pain accompanied by nausea and sudden visual disturbance. Most types of glaucoma are hereditaryGlaucoma is the leading cause of blindness for people over the age of 60Open-angle glaucoma does not present with symptomsSome vision loss begins with peripheral or side vision. You may compensate for this unconsciously by turning your head to the side, and may not notice anything until significant vision is lostAn estimated 3 million Americans have glaucoma but only half of those know they have itGlaucoma is a chronic disease and must be managed and monitored for lifeResearch tells us that everyone is at risk of glaucoma. The disease affects every age group with a higher concentration among Blacks, Asians, and Hispanics. It is also known that people who are severely near-sighted and diabetic are also among the high-risk group. But if caught early and properly managed, this disease may not cause blindness because treatment can slow the progression of the disease.Treatment and ManagementAccording to the Cleveland Clinic, its important to see your eye doctor immediately if you have eye pain, severe headaches or vision problems.Glaucoma treatments include:Eyedrops/Medication: Prescription eyedrops decrease fluids and increase drainage to alleviate eye pressure. There are many types of eyedrop medications that can be used for this condition. Because glaucoma is a lifelong condition, you may need to use daily eyedrops for life.Laser treatment: Your eye doctor uses a laser (strong beam of light) to help improve fluid drainage from your eye. While the laser can complement the use of eye drops, it may not replace it completely. The results from laser treatments vary but can last up to five years. Some laser treatments can also be repeated.Surgery: Surgery is another way to help reduce eye pressure. It is more invasive but can also achieve better eye pressure control faster than drops or laser. Surgery can help slow down vision loss, but it cant restore lost vision or cure glaucoma. There are many types of surgeries for glaucoma, and depending on the specific type and severity, your eye doctor may choose one over another.Signs of glaucomaLoss of peripheral or side vision is usually one of the first sign of glaucoma. If you or your loved one is experiencing this type of vision loss, be sure to contact an ophthalmologist as soon as possible. Other signs to be aware of include:Seeing halos around lights: If you see rainbow-colored circles around lights or are unusually sensitive to light, it could be a sign of glaucoma.Vision loss: Especially if it happens suddenly. What you can do as your loved ones caregiverA few suggestions that can help provide safety for your loved one with glaucoma:Mark steps and slopesImprove lightingRemove clutterUse large print on important itemsUse technology such as smartphones, tablets, text-to-speech appsProvide low-vision aides which are devices that aid people with poor vision. If you provide dementia care for an elderly parent, heres what you should know about the benefits of yoga. Reverses Alzheimers-Related Memory LossFor the first time, a study published last year found that the memory loss associated with Alzheimers and dementia can be reversed. This study included yoga and meditation as part of a 36-point therapeutic program. In the small study, a comprehensive and personalized program was able to reverse memory loss in 9 out of 10 participants with memory that started to get better within 3-6 months. This program included, among other things, performing yoga to reduce stress, eliminating simple carbs, and fasting for at least 12 hours between dinner and breakfast. Here are some causes of loss of balance in seniors and what you can do to keep your aging loved one safe. Ear & Equilibrium DisordersEar disorders are common in seniors and may affect equilibrium. When this happens, a condition known as vertigo may develop, causing a loss of balance. Among the most common reasons for vertigo are inner ear infections and fluid in the ear. Vertigo often leads to a spinning sensation and can be so severe that it causes the person to fall. In addition to loss of balance, vertigo can also cause nausea, vomiting, headaches, palpitations, rapid eye movements, and disorientation. If your loved one complains of vertigo, make an appointment to see his or her physician. The cause of vertigo needs to be determined and treated as soon as possible to prevent balance issues, accidents, and injuries.Seniors who want to remain healthy as they age can benefit in a variety of ways when they receive professional elderly home care. Assisting Hands Home Care is here to help your loved one accomplish daily tasks, prevent illness, and focus on living a healthier and more fulfilling life. HypertensionOne of the most common reasons for balance issues in seniors is high blood pressure. Also known as hypertension, high blood pressure can cause severe dizziness, abnormal heart rate, poor circulation, and neurological issues, all of which may be associated with loss of balance. If your loved one has hypertension, make sure he or she takes prescribed medications, follows a low-sodium diet, maintains a healthy weight, and avoids cigarettes and alcohol. Once hypertension is well controlled, balance issues may resolve. Older adults can prevent hypertension by making healthy lifestyle choices. If your aging loved one needs help managing everyday tasks or encouragement to adopt healthier lifestyle choices, turn to Assisting Hands Home Care, a leading provider of homecare. Naples Assisting Hands Home Care provides professional in-home caregivers around the clock to help seniors live longer, happier, and healthier lives. Poor CirculationCirculatory issues can cause loss of balance in seniors. If blood flow isnt optimal, your loved one may develop balance issues associated with leg weakness, cognitive deficits, dizziness, and blood pressure irregularities. If your parent complains of leg pain or has redness and inflammation on the back of one of his or her calves, seek emergency medical attention as soon as possible. Long-standing or untreated circulatory issues may raise the risk of blood clots in the legs and lead to a loss of balance. Cardiac ArrhythmiaSeniors may be more susceptible to cardiac arrhythmia than young adults. A cardiac arrhythmia refers to an abnormal heart rhythm, which can cause palpitations, weakness, chest pain, anxiety, fainting, severe dizziness, and subsequent loss of balance. If your loved one experiences any of the aforementioned symptoms, seek medical attention. Once cardiac conditions have been treated, associated symptoms such as balance issues and dizziness should resolve. Treatment for a cardiac arrhythmia often includes medications known as beta blockers. While effective at establishing a normal heart rate and rhythm, beta blockers such as propranolol can cause muscle weakness, dizziness, low blood pressure, and loss of balance. In some cases, loss of balance is the result of a major medical condition. Living with serious health conditions can make it challenging for seniors to age in place. However, they can maintain a higher quality of life with the help of professional live-in care. Dementia affects everyone differently, but you can gain some insight into your loved ones level of understanding by recognizing what happens during each stage. How Dementia Symptoms Change with Each StageDuring the earliest stages of dementia, symptoms may be limited to occasional memory lapses. However, seniors level of understanding can fluctuate depending on factors such as how tired they are and if theyre living with other health issues. The middle to later stages of dementia bring more episodes of confusion, and you may eventually begin to notice your loved one is having difficulty understanding you more often. By the final stage of dementia, your loved one may have rare episodes of lucidity or none at all. Either way, you still have many options for enhancing communication. You may need to help your loved one put in hearing aids or eliminate noise in the background. If your loved one doesnt understand something, try rephrasing it. You can also use visual aids that allow your loved one to point to images to communicate with you. If you find the numbers spiraling up on your scale you're not alone.Taking care of a loved one is as equally rewarding as it is stressful. So, its easy to understand how caregivers may lose sight of their own health when they are preoccupied with taking care of their loved ones daily needs. Maintaining a healthy weight is a challenge for most, but the constant stress of caring for others creates an extra challenge. In most instances, poor eating and exercise habits may be the reason for unwanted weight gain but its not the only reason. According to Weight and Wellness, approximately 90% of caregivers say stress has the most impact on their lives and on their health. This kind of stress can lead to stress eating if other coping mechanisms are not explored and in place.A Few Ways You're Risking Weight Gain Without KnowingLack of SleepYou are probably already aware that nighttime snacking is not a good choice for controlling your optimal weight. What you may not be aware of is that science is suggesting that its not just snacking that's the problem, but lack of sleep may also be a culprit for weight gain. Some research suggests that lack of sleep interferes with the hunger hormone, ghrelin. A few studies from the University of Chicago and Stanford University in California found that this appetite-stimulating hormone rises in people who have not gotten enough rest. It is also stated that leptin, the hormone that signals the brain when you're full, decreases when people don't get enough rest, according to AARP.comEmotional EatingWhen overwhelmed and stressed it is common for many people to reach for comfort food which starts to become habitual after a while. According to the Mayo Clinic, emotional eating is eating to suppress or soothe negative emotions, such as stress, anger, fear, boredom, sadness, and loneliness. As most, if not all caregivers know, those emotions are quite common to experience in varying degrees while providing care to a loved one or a client.Although eating comfort foods have a temporary calming effect it can also create long term consequences. Its hard to break this type of habit, but learning your triggers is an excellent start. One suggestion for eliminating stress eating is to consider journaling to sort out emotional triggers you may be having that are causing you to need comfort. Keeping a journal is also helpful for reflection and to understand past setbacks. One important thing to remember is that when the urge to eat arises to soothe your emotions, the urge will pass if you don't give into it. That is why providing an outlet for your feelings is going to help in the long run. It will become a new, healthy habit to turn to a journal rather than a cookie for comfort and emotional release.Perhaps you cant cut out emotional eating altogether. If that is the case, consider keeping healthy snack alternatives around for quick and easy access. It is all about planning so equip yourself with your favorite healthy snacks. Here are a few ideas to have on hand. Be sure to eat it slowly and be consciously aware of the flavor and enjoyment that the healthy snack is providing and that its guilt free!Instead of chips, try a few unsalted, roasted almonds or walnuts. They will provide you with the crunch that chips offer without the high unhealthy fat and sodium.Substitute sweets with fresh or dried fruit. When your brain feels the need for something sweet you can trick it by eating ripe, juicy, sweet fruit.Replace ice cream for a cup of frozen low-fat yogurt or a frozen all fruit pop. Grocery stores provide a plethora of choices for both healthier options. Consider having more than one flavor or type of frozen treat on hand to help your brain feel satisfied with having a selection.Replace soda, both sweetened and diet, with naturally flavored water. This is another product that comes with rows and rows of choices at the grocery store if you opt for store-bought. According to Inc.com, diet soda can also lead to weight gain in a variety of ways including conditioning our taste buds for sweetness. Click to learn more about diet soda and weight gain.DehydrationYou may not even be aware that your body is getting dehydrated. Sometimes the demands and responsibilities of caring for a loved one are 24/7 so its easy to miss early cues that you're thirsty. But the kicker is, the signs of dehydration are easily confused with hunger. Some signs of prolonged dehydration are fatigue, headache, dizziness, reduced cognitive function, confusion, and a growling stomach. So, be careful that you are not getting thirst confused with hunger. Some suggestions are keeping a tumbler or bottle filled with water nearby so that you can take drinks regularly throughout the day. There are even apps available for you to download that help you keep track of your daily water intake. Most apps allow you to set an alert to remind you to take a water break.StressNeglecting self-care will lead to caregiver burnout. Increased stress creates a cascade of hormonal responses, one being cortisol, a stress hormone that creates insulin resistance and you guessed it weight gain. As a caregiver, it is normal to feel overly responsible, but keep in mind, you can delegate. Don't be afraid to ask for help. It doesn't mean that you are not able to handle the responsibility of being a caregiver. It means you are human. Create a circle of friends and fellow family members if possible. You can also find support through local community based elder programs and services. If you don't know of any, consider an internet search or contact your citys Office of Older Adults for recommendations. But whatever you do, do not neglect you! Find a way to carve out time for what brings you peace and calm. Things you enjoy. Consider taking a walk or other physical activity that you enjoy. It can also be as simple as taking 5 to 10 minutes each day to do some deep breathing while listening to music that you find soothing.Your health care is often finding the time for self-care. If you begin to develop alternative habits that promote your mental, physical, and emotional wellness, you will find that the urge to eat under pressure becomes lessened.
Whether its putting up a fuss when it comes time to take another pill or skipping doses, seniors and their caregivers sometimes need help managing daily medications. Whats referred to as non-adherence (failure to take medications on time or as directed) can result in increased symptoms and side effects associated with the conditions the medications are supposed to be treating. Consider the following tips to help your senior loved one take his or her meds as directed. Start a Productive DialogueFight the temptation to reverse roles and insist your loved one take medications for his or her own good, which often sets up a confrontation. Instead, set aside time to talk about why your loved one doesnt like taking the medicine. Realize some of the reasons your loved one gives may be valid and correctable. Take time to thoroughly discuss the thinking behind the following possible reasons your loved one may not want to take medications: Having friends who took the same medication with adverse reactionsNot liking the way certain medications make him or her feelClaiming to feel just fine (and seeing no reason to continue with medications)In-home care providers can benefit aging adults in a variety of ways. From cooking nutritious meals to offering timely medication reminders, the dedicated caregivers at Assisting Hands Home Care are available to help your elderly loved one 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.Cut Back on Some MedicationsYour loved one may get understandably annoyed with having to take so many medications throughout the day. Schedule an appointment with the doctor to determine if some of these medications can be eliminated, reduced, or replaced with a medicine that treats multiple symptoms. You can also inquire about alternative and holistic treatment options. Schedule an Evaluation for Other ConditionsIf your loved one only recently began forgetting to take medicine or is being difficult about taking medication, he or she may have an undiagnosed condition thats causing the problem. Some forms of dementia, for instance, can diminish cognitive functioning or result in mood shifts that can make medication time difficult. For seniors who want to stay healthy, its important that they take their medications as prescribed by their physicians. Associate Taking Medications with MealtimeAssociate mealtimes throughout the day with taking medications to help your loved one remember when to take medicine.
