For Floridians, hurricanes arent novel. It seems that in exchange for the glorious sunny days and warmth in the winter months, you must accept that, at some point, a hurricane could impact your city. On September 28th, Category 4 Hurricane Ian struck the southwestern coast of Florida, causing widespread damage. So many people, including those who reside at The Terraces at Bonita Springs, were in the path of the storm. However, the emotions at the Florida senior living community werent those of worry and stress, but instead were those of a calm and collected team of employees and residents who thrived despite this natural disaster. Thanks to strong leadership, a safety and preparedness plan, and an extraordinary group of staff and residents alike, The Terraces proved there couldnt have been a better place to weather the storm.  Planning and Prepping To Shelter in PlaceHurricane preparedness is huge here, shares Executive Director of The Terraces, Michele Wasserlauf. We have a detailed plan outlining everything the residents need to know, and we host resident meetings to keep these plans fresh in everyones minds.And off Wasserlauf and her team went, doing such things as visiting each residence to set refrigerators to low and pulling patio furniture indoors. Generators were topped off so full power would remain for the health care division and power sources would be available in independent living. Additionally, some staff members brought their families to the community when they needed somewhere to shelter in place. This provided safety for them and ensured the staff would be there around the clock to care for residents. Wasserlauf emphasized, Everyone watches out for one another and considers staff an extension of their family. We made room for everyone. Everyone Under One RoofOne of the perks of living at The Terraces is that everyone is under one roof. During the hurricane, this meant everything to independent living resident Rita Weiss, whose husband was in skilled nursing at the time of the storm. I had a front-row seat to the amazing work the staff was doing in health services. There was full power from the generators, three meals a day, and I had 24-hour access to be with my husband, Weiss shares, It was nice to be close to him during the worst of the storm. Until you experience it, you cant imagine how much of a blessing it is to have your spouse near you when they have different care needs.The Terraces at Bonita Springs is a Life Plan Community where you have access to the full continuum of care should you ever need it. This provides comfort and security for residents and families alike. An Impressive OutcomeThe Terraces were built to endure up to 150 mph winds, and thankfully damage to the building was minimal. There was tremendous relief that there was no storm surge. Aside from some roof, fence, and tree damage, there was no severe damage, and power returned quickly.The lasting impact, however, is showing up in the calls coming in after the storm. We keep getting calls from seniors looking to move in. They heard from others how well-prepared we were, and many seniors are ready to leave behind the maintenance of their own home for the comfort and safety of our community. Wasserlauf elaborates, Seniors know well give them the best care no matter the circumstances. For senior living communities in Florida, emergency preparedness plans are essential but so are the incredible people who set them into motion. Weiss, who also serves as the president of the resident council, calculates that more than 7,000 man-hours were worked over the course of the storm to ensure every person had the best care possible. It was so fun, continues Weiss, to see residents dogs playing with children of the staff members, and everyone spending time together and building new friendships.Gratitude This Holiday SeasonThis time of year, were regularly reminded of thankfulness and gratitude, but at The Terraces, this sentiment exists year-round. Celebrating 10 Years of The Terraces at Bonita SpringsOver the course of a decade, our Life Plan Community in Bonita Springs, Florida, has grown right alongside the wonderful associates and residents who call this place home and we couldnt be more thankful. This year, were celebrating our 10-year anniversary in style. We recently hosted two celebrations the first of which was hosted for residents in the Renaissance at The Terraces with more than 60 residents from assisted living, memory support, skilled nursing, and rehabilitation, that provided an evening full of gourmet meals and live entertainment. This grand event was followed by festivities for those in independent living.A grand night for celebrating Resident Jo Ann Vogel, who lives at The Terraces at Bonita Springs with her husband Bud, will soon be celebrating their 10-year move-in anniversary in October and cant praise the community enough for how much joy and support the community brings to its residents. She very much enjoyed herself at the recent celebrations and says the grand events are still being talked about amongst her and her friends. The 10-year anniversary celebration was an elegant, well-done event. It was decorated beautifully, and we enjoyed a seafood buffet that began in the lobby, followed by a delicious surf and turf dinner with a live band (41 South) and dancing. I appreciate the effort the associates put into this event, said Jo Ann. The event also had speakers, from original residents sharing their favorite parts about the community, to Dr. Feldman, one of our first charter members, Ron Jennette, President and COO of SantaFe Senior Living, to Michele Wasserlauf, Executive Director, to Jenna Drese, The Terraces Senior Living Transition Specialist, who shared history and milestones the community has achieved over the last decade. Residents were able to take home a silver 10-year anniversary engraved picture frame to place their event photo.A history of caring for others Jenna actually began her tenure at this location in 2009 when it was in development with Greystone Communities, well before The Terraces building was constructed. She became an employee of The Terraces in 2015 when the community was completed and highly occupied. Her time at the community has been met with many joys. She loves problem-solving for new residents, helping them make their new homes custom designed and comfortable just to their liking. Each day is different, which brings a great deal of variety and excitement to her role, too. I could be taking reservations or preparing for an upcoming event, helping a new resident choose their selected options to customize their residence, touring interested prospects in assisted living, and helping a new resident move in and get acclimated to their new community. Its my job to make sure everyones needs are met and that residents are happy, said Jenna. What does Jenna think is the biggest change The Terraces has undergone in the last 10 years? The revamping of the community post-COVID-19. We went from closed dining rooms, mobile happy hours, and to-go meals to a complete reopening and refresh of restaurant-style dining options with even better menu items than before, plus new opportunities for social events and entertainment.How residents benefit from our communityJo Ann continued with her appreciation and excitement for life at The Terraces feelings that she experiences every day. Im proud of this place. We work together like a support network, and our lives are better because of it. She understands the importance of community and experienced it firsthand after she broke her leg and needed to utilize The Terraces rehabilitation center. All my husband and neighborhood friends had to do was walk over to visit me. When your friend is grieving, you want to do everything you can to be there for them and support them during this difficult time. But you may wonder are you overstepping? What if you say the wrong thing? Its common to second guess ourselves when we have the best intentions for supporting a friend after a loss.Grief is something we all experience at some point, but without some guidance, it can be difficult to know how to best support someone when theyve lost a loved one, said Erin Smith of The Terraces at Bonita Springs, a senior living community in Bonita Springs, FloridaWere starting a group for widows in our community called The Terraces Vita Nova Social Club. This will be a space where people in our local community who have lost their significant other have an opportunity to connect and socialize through new friendships, Erin continued.Vita Nova gives members the opportunity to talk about their experiences, their challenges, and enjoy the shared support of the people around them. The group will also focus on moving forward and finding joy in the next chapter of their lives through engaging gatherings and new friendships.Vita Nova aims to provide ladies with a space where they feel encouraged to venture away from isolated homes to spend an afternoon with others who have gone through a similar experience.As a friend, keep these simple ways in mind so that you can be there for a grieving friend.1.   Reach Out to Your FriendReach out with a phone call or a text message to express your condolences. This small action lets them know youre there for them and will support them through this difficult time. Remember to keep reaching out, even after the initial wave of loss has settled.2.   ListenYou may be with your friend when they feel like they want to vent about their emotions or talk about their loved one. A study examining grief support showed that allowing the grieving person to discuss their loved one and not rush them through their feelings felt emotionally supported.One key thing to remember is to not advise or interrupt your friend. Simply listening and letting them get anything they want off their chest can be a huge help to their grieving process.3.   Validate Their FeelingsWhen your friend is discussing how theyre feeling, its important to validate them. While grief is a process, its not always a straightforward process. Your friend may have had a good couple of weeks, only to feel their grief all over again. Being there to validate their feelings and that its okay for them not to be okay can provide them with comfort and assurance.4.   Show UpShowing up is one of the best ways to support your grieving friend.You cook a meal, drop it off to them, and its ready to go in the oven.You stop by with groceries.You take their dog for a walk or mow the lawn.Often, when you say, Let me know if I can do anything for you, your friend may not feel comfortable reaching out and asking. By showing up with a plan, you can alleviate some of the most difficult parts of going through the grieving process keeping up with everything else.Use the phrase Id love it if youd allow me to to increase the odds of them accepting your assistance without shame.5.   Help Your Friend Find SupportWhile there are many ways you can support your friend, they may benefit from other types of support as well. A support group for people who have experienced loss, like your friend, can help them connect with others and hear from others who are further along in the grieving process. They may not be ready for quite some time, but gently remind them that they may find comfort in like-minded individuals.6.   Plan an ActivityWhen your friend is going through the grieving process, some days or times of the week may be particularly difficult. For example, the demands of the workweek and running a house may keep your friend occupied Monday through Friday, but they struggle with Saturdays.Taking them out for coffee, to walk around a farmers market, or to their favorite restaurant can give them something to look forward to and get through the more difficult days.7.   Keep in TouchMany people may be in touch with your friend immediately following their loss. However, when life starts to get back to normal, those people may stop reaching out.
